AIMS: Enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATCL) is a rare complication of coeliac disease. We investigated whether EATCLs are the neoplastic counterparts of activated cytotoxic T-cells (CTLs).
METHODS AND RESULTS: Eight cases, clinically and histologically defined, were stained with monoclonal antibodies against components of the cytotoxic granules of CTLs, granzyme B and T-cell restricted intracellular antigen (TIA-1). It was found that all cases had a cytotoxic phenotype, i.e. expression of TIA-1 in most of the tumour cells, whereas granzyme B was found in six of eight cases, mostly in

Enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL), an uncommon lymphoma of intestinal intraepithelial T lymphocytes, occurs with a higher frequency in northern Europe due to association with celiac disease. Data on the occurrence of EATL in the Asian population, among whom celiac disease is very rare, are conflicting. This study aimed to characterize EATL encountered in the Chinese population in Hong Kong. Eighteen cases were identified, all fulfilling the criteria of type II rather than classical EATL. The patients, including 13 men and 5 women, had a median age of 62 years. Most presented with s

BACKGROUND: Despite treatment, enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma has a very poor outcome. Chemotherapy can be complicated by small bowel perforation, gastrointestinal bleeding and development of enterocolic fistulae. Here we report on the feasibility, safety and efficacy of high-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation in patients with enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (three upfront and one at relapse), with or without prior partial small bowel resection.
METHODS: Four patients [two males, two females, mean age 65 years (range 60-69 years)] received high-d

The patient was a 73-year-old man diagnosed with low-grade B-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified based on a biopsy of the enlarged cervical lymph nodes. He remained untreated and was monitored during follow-up visits only. Progressive anemia developed after 5 years. Enteroscopy revealed stricture and ulcerative lesions involving the entire circumference of the middle section of the small intestine. Based on the biopsy results, he was diagnosed with enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL). Biopsy of an enlarged axillary lymph node simultaneously revealed Epstein-Barr virus-negative diff

Refractory celiac disease (RCD) is a rare complication of celiac disease and bears a high risk for lifethreatening enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL). While RCD is generally considered a direct EATL precursor, supporting evidence is limited and the predictive value for EATL development of molecular aberrations in RCD as risk factors unclear. We aim to dissect the clonal evolution of RCD and EATL to support molecular diagnostics-based clinical decision making. RCD specimens of patients with (n=6) and without (n=21) development of EATL within 5 years after diagnosis, and EATL specimen

INTRODUCTION: Enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL) is associated with celiac disease. With the rising prevalence of celiac disease, we hypothesized that the prevalence of EATL is also increasing.
METHODS: We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, which is a population-based US cancer surveillance program. We used the ICD-0-3 code 9717/3 to identify patients with EATL diagnosed between 2000 and 2020. Incidence rates were calculated using the SEER*Stat software, and annual percent change was calculated using the Joinpoint software. Log-rank tests were used to ev

Enteropathy associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL) is a rare complication of celiac disease (CD). We report a case of EATL associated with CD revealed by acute intestinal obstruction. A North African woman of 38 years old with a history of infertility and chronic abdominal pain was admitted in emergency with acute intestinal obstruction. During the surgery, we found a tumor on the small intestine with mesenteric lymphadenopathy. Histology and immunohistochemistry of the specimen objectified a digestive T lymphoma CD3+ and immunological assessment of celiac disease was positive. The diagnosis of EAT

Background: Enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL) is a rare subtype of mature T-cell lymphoma, accounting for fewer than 5% of peripheral T-cell lymphomas, with an aggressive course and poor prognosis. There are two types of this disease based on morphology and immunophenotype: type I, which is often, but not always, associated with celiac disease (classic EATL), and type 2, monomorphic epitheliotropic intestinal T-cell lymphoma (MEITL). Risk factors for classic EATL are poor adherence to a gluten-free diet, advanced age, male sex, and HLA-DQ2 homozygosity. The treatment options includ

Enteropathy-associated T cell lymphoma is a rare lymphoma specific to the gastrointestinal system, arising from intraepithelial T lymphocytes, that is often associated with celiac disease. We report a 53-year-old female patient with no previous disease who presented with severe abdominal pain. Physical examination revealed diffuse abdominal tenderness and abdominal guarding and the patient underwent emergency surgery with a diagnosis of acute abdomen. During the operation, a 20-cm mass was found located on Treitz ligament, invading the duodenum and pancreatic head and perforating the jejunum.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which a genetic predisposition and the ingestion of wheat gluten triggers a deleterious immune response. This response is complex and may lead to manifestations other than enteropathyha: hepatitis, dermatitis and neuropathy. There is higher risk for neoplasia. We observed an atypical case, corresponding to a 69-year old female presenting with complicated celiac disease. The patient was referred following the histological examination of an enterectomy specimen, which unexpectedly revealed an enteropathy-associated T cell lymphoma in a background of ce

Enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL) is an extremely rare disease, which is often related to gluten-sensitive enteropathy. It is an uncommon intestinal lymphoma with very poor prognosis and high mortality rate. In the absence of specific symptoms or radiological findings, it is difficult to diagnose early. Major complications of EATL have been known as intestinal perforation or obstruction, and only 5 cases of EATL are reported in South Korea. In this study, we report a case of 71-year-old male with symptoms of diarrhea, which later it progressed into cancer perforation of the colon.

Enteropathy-associated T cell lymphoma (EATL) is a rare entity associated with coeliac disease, with a poor prognosis due to perforation and gastro-intestinal bleeding during treatment, and a high relapse risk. Six patients were treated with two cycles of IVE (ifosphamide, etoposide, epirubicin), followed by two cycles of high-dose methotrexate (3 g/m(2)) with folinic acid rescue and a BEAM (carmustine, etoposide, cytarabine, melphalan) autograft. Enteral feeding was given throughout treatment. Four patients remain alive in complete remission at 1.83-4.32 years; two have relapsed. Given the hi

According to the new World Health Organization classification system, there are 2 types of enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma. Type 1 is associated with celiac disease and accounts for the majority of cases in Western countries, whereas type 2 is not associated with celiac disease. To characterize enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma types in Korea, we carried out clinicopathologic and immunophenotypic analyses of 8 Koreans with enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma and investigated genomic profile using array comparative genomic hybridization. The tumors involved the small intestine in

AIM: To evaluate computed tomography (CT) findings, useful to suggest the presence of refractory celiac disease (RCD) and enteropathy associated T cell lymphoma (EATL).
METHODS: Coeliac disease (CD) patients were divided into two groups. Group I: uncomplicated CD (n = 14) and RCD type I (n = 10). Group II: RCD type II (n = 15) and EATL (n = 7).
RESULTS: Both groups showed classic signs of CD on CT. Intussusception was seen in 1 patient in group I vs 5 in group II (P = 0.06). Lymphadenopathy was seen in 5 patients in group II vs no patients in group I (P = 0.01). Increased number of small mes

Capsule endoscopy is a new technology developed to investigate diseases of the small intestine. It has been shown to be superior to current modalities such as small-bowel radiography and enteroscopy. We describe a patient with long-standing celiac disease who presented with abdominal pain, diarrhea, and weight loss, after many years on a gluten-free diet. The symptom complex and results from small-bowel radiography and computerized tomography raised concern about progression to lymphoma, and ultimately a laparoscopy and small-bowel resection were done for diagnosis. A capsule endoscopy was per

The persistence or recurrence of symptoms in patients with coeliac disease (CD), despite a gluten-free diet (GFD), must prompt further work-up for excluding refractory CD (RCD). The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of serum markers in predicting refractoriness in CD patients. This study included 72 patients affected by CD followed-up at our center, namely 49 uncomplicated CD before and after GFD and 23 RCD. Serum levels of chromogranin A (CgA) and β2-microglobuline were measured at baseline and at follow-up (median time of 13 months) in each group of patients. Cut-off points for ea

Type II enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (Type II EATL) is a rare peripheral T-cell lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract. Here, we report a case of Type II EATL, in which the patient with repeated diarrhea was diagnosed as ulcerative colitis and amebic infection at the beginning, but her symptom had no improvement after therapy. The diagnosis of Type II EATL was confirmed by the repeated biopsies and immunohistochemistry. This case suggests that Type II EATL is difficult to diagnose due to lack of specific symptoms and endoscopic features. It reminds us that for patients with increased

Enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL) is a rare extranodal T-cell lymphoma arising from the intestine. Two types of EATL have been reported. In contrast to the classic EATL type I, EATL type II occurs sporadically, is unrelated to celiac disease, and comprises 10% to 20% of all EATL cases. A total of five cases of EATL type II were diagnosed at our clinic from January 2009 to September 2012. Four of the five patients were diagnosed with the help of endoscopy. Among the four patients, two of the cases involved both the small and large intestines, whereas in the other two patients, EATL
