[Phycomycoses].

Phycomycoses are opportunistic fungal diseases as far as mucormycosis is concerned, but for basidiobolomycosis and entomophthoromycosis, the adjective 'opportunistic' should be used with caution. Mucormycosis assumes cranial, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, disseminated, cutaneous and focal forms: the infection nearly always develops in a person whose resistance is lowered by a metabolic disorder, a blood dyscrasia, corticosteroid or immunodepressive therapy. It is a frequent complication in leukemia or diabetic acidosis. Basidiobolomycosis and entomophtoromycosis are caused by fungi which belong

Fungal artillery of zombie flies: infectious spore dispersal using a soft water cannon.

Dead sporulating female fly cadavers infected by the house fly-pathogenic fungus Entomophthora muscae are attractive to healthy male flies, which by their physical inspection may mechanically trigger spore release and by their movement create whirlwind airflows that covers them in infectious conidia. The fungal artillery of E. muscae protrudes outward from the fly cadaver, and consists of a plethora of micrometric stalks that each uses a liquid-based turgor pressure build-up to eject a jet of protoplasm and the initially attached spore. The biophysical processes that regulate the release and r

Drosophila host defense mechanisms against filamentous fungal pathogens with diverse lifestyles.

Entomopathogenic fungi serve as powerful regulators of insect populations in nature. However, how immune effectors combat fungal pathogens remains incompletely understood. We employ Drosophila melanogaster as a genetically tractable model to dissect immune defense mechanisms against diverse fungal pathogens. We show that the Toll pathway is the key determinant of immunity against all species tested regardless of their ecological strategy, primarily through resistance mechanisms that limit fungal proliferation. In addition, melanization, but not phagocytosis or the Imd pathway, also has a role

Entomophthoromycosis due to Basidiobolus haptosporus.

This paper reports a case of entomophthoromycosis in a 40-year-old man who presented with an ulcerative wound and serosanguineous discharge after surgical removal of a fibrocystic mass. The serosanguineous discharge yielded Basidiobolus haptosporus, perhaps the first culture-proven case from a surgical wound.

Phylogenetic placement of two species known only from resting spores: Zoophthora independentia sp. nov. and Z. porteri comb nov. (Entomophthorales: Entomophthoraceae).

Molecular methods were used to determine the generic placement of two species of Entomophthorales known only from resting spores. Historically, these species would belong in the form-genus Tarichium, but this classification provides no information about phylogenetic relationships. Using DNA from resting spores, Zoophthora independentia, infecting Tipula (Lunatipula) submaculata in New York State, is now described as a new species and Tarichium porteri, described in 1942, which infects Tipula (Triplicitipula) colei in Tennessee, is transferred to the genus Zoophthora. We have shown that use of

[5 new cases of entomophthoromycosis observed in Cameroon. Role of immunofluorescence in thr diagnosis].

The authors present five new cases of entomophthoromycosis observed during three years of histopathology in Cameroon. Three classic cases of rhinoentomophthoromycosis. In one case, Conidiobolus coronatus was isolated. Two cases of subcutaneous entomophthoromycosis, without isolation of the germ. In one observation, the clinical and histological aspect suggested mucormycosis post entomophthoromycosis. An immunofluorescence technique showed the Basidiobolus haptosporus to be the real cause.

[Rhinoentomophthoramycoses. Report of 4 cases].

Four cases of rhynoentomophthoramycosis are reported from urban areas of the states of Bahia and Maranhão, Brazil. The lesions presented with infiltration, redness and heat of the skin of the nose and infraorbital areas and accompanying nasal stuffiness. In on case the infiltration also involved the lips and mandibular area causing severe facial deformity. Microscopically, granulomatous reactions with small abcesses, fibrosis and a dense infiltration of eosinophils were found. Hyphae were seen frequently, always associated with the Splendore phenomenon. Three cases were treated completely with

Immunodiffusion test for serodiagnosing subcutaneous zygomycosis.

Culture filtrate antigens of Basidiobolus ranarum and Conidiobolus coronatus were analyzed by immunodiffusion (ID) with homologous rabbit antisera. B. ranarum and C. coronatus were each found to have five specific antigens. Results of tests with heterologous antisera indicated that all of the species shared at least one antigen. ID tests incorporating the specific precipitin bands as references were developed for detection of basidiobolomycosis and conidiobolomycosis. These tests were performed with sera from humans and horses with proven basidiobolomycosis and conidiobolomycosis as well as wi

Disseminated infection caused by Cunninghamella bertholletiae in a patient with beta-thalassemia. Case report and review of the literature.

Rare cases of acute mucormycosis in immunocompromised persons have been attributed to Cunninghamella bertholletiae. We report the first known case of this organism causing a chronic, indolent, systemic disease clinically similar to entomophthoramycosis. Cunninghamella bertholletiae is an opportunistic pathogen whose morbidity may be underappreciated because it is usually considered to be a laboratory contaminant.

[New approaches to phycomycoses (apropos of 2 cases of rhino-entomophthoromycosis)].

It is an uncommon affection (only 100 cases reported), observed primarily in African peri-equatorial zone. The rhinoentomophtoromycoses are caused by a phycomycetous fungus, class of zygomycetes: Conidiobolus coronatus. They are subcutaneomucus mycoses with centro-facial localizations. During the past ten years, three points have been put into light. 1. A true therapeutic revolution thanks to imidazoles. 2. A better knowledge of this disease in which caricatural forms are far form being the most numerous. 3. A socio-cultural African approach better understood, as such a disease is still consid

[2 new cases of rhinoentomophthoromycosis diagnosed in the Central African Republic (review of the literature)].

After a historical account and review of the published literature on rhinoentomophthoromycosis, we report two recently recognized cases in Central African Republic. The first case was a 32 year-old "peuhl" woman with typical facial deformation that gave her a "hippopotamus-woman" aspect. The second case was a 53 year-old man with lesions that were less typical and limited to one half of the face only. In both cases, hypodermic nodules were palpable and it is likely that inoculation occurred by scratching of a skin lesion. The woman originates from a savanna region whereas the second patient is

Rhinofacial zygomycosis caused by Conidiobolus coronatus: a case report including in vitro sensitivity to antimycotic agents.

A case of zygomycosis caused by Conidiobolus coronatus, occurring in a 31-year-old priest from the Ivory Coast, is reported. Lesions eventually resolved after 2 1/2 years, during which the patient was variously treated with intravenous amphotericin B and miconazole as well as surgical resection. It is difficult to be certain which, if any, of these treatments contributed to resolution of lesions. A report of in vitro sensitivity data to a variety of antifungal agents is included.

Entomophthorales infection of the maxillofacial region.

Phycomycosis infections caused by the fungi Rhizopus and Mucor are commonly termed mucormycosis. Mucormycosis infections exhibit a rapidly progressive course characterized by angioinvasion and necrosis. The rhinocerebral form has been described thoroughly in the literature. However, there exists another order of Phycomycetes, the Entomophthorales, which rarely cause clinical disease. Their infection is indolent and is associated with granulomatous inflammation and a protracted clinical course. Presented here is a rare case of suspected Canidiobolus coronato infection occurring in the maxillofa

Entomophthoromycosis caused by Conidiobolus coronatus: clinicomycological study of a case.

A case of midfacial swelling in a middle aged woman proved to be caused by a fungus Conidiobolus coronatus has been reported. It is a very rare condition and the knowledge of this fungus affecting the rhinofacial region in human started since 1965 only. These cases pose diagnostic problem. The treatment with the combination of ketoconazole and the saturated solution of potassium iodide was effective for this fungal infection.

Mycotic infections of the alimentary tract of nonhuman primates: a review.

Lesions of candidiasis, mucormycosis (phycomycosis), entomophthoramycosis, geotrichosis, cryptococcosis, paracoccidioidomycosis and coccidioidomycosis have been reported in the alimentary tract of nonhuman primates. Candidiasis and mucormycosis were reported most often. Both Old and New World monkeys and great apes are susceptible; infection is rare in prosimians. Ulcers and necrosis of the mucosa of the alimentary tract are the principal gross lesions. A granulomatous inflammatory process occurs in which the fungi are visible histologically on hematoxylin and eosin (HE)-stained sections, but
