Eosinophilic Esophagitis: The Role of Environmental Exposures.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic, non-IgE immune-mediated reaction characterized by eosinophilic infiltration leading to esophageal dysfunction, inflammation, and potential for fibrotic remodeling. Although food allergens are generally considered the leading trigger for EoE, emerging evidence suggests that modifiable environmental factors may also play a role in the pathogenesis of EoE. This article discusses the latest data regarding the role of the exposome, microbiome, and environmental allergens on the development and ongoing inflammation of EoE, focusing on the last 10 years of

Exposure to environmental chemicals and perinatal psychopathology.

Women are nearly twice as likely to develop mood disorders compared with men, and incidence is greatest during reproductive transitions, including pregnancy and postpartum. Because these periods are characterized by dramatic hormonal and physiologic changes, there is heightened susceptibility to external factors, such as exposure to environmental toxicants, which may play a role in maternal psychopathology. The purpose of this scoping review was to provide an overview of studies conducted in humans and animal models on the effects of nonoccupational exposure to environmental chemicals on mater

Environmental and Occupational Exposures in Kidney Disease.

More than 8 million deaths each year are attributed to noncommunicable environmental hazards where people live, work, and play. Physical or chemical hazards may be inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin, affecting all organ systems, including the kidney. Heavy metals, pesticides, and infections are some of the environmental hazards associated with kidney dysfunction and chronic kidney disease. The severity of the effects of these exposures likely is modulated by the timing and duration of exposure, genetic susceptibility, and other conditions, and may lead to the development of acute

Environmental and occupational exposure to resorcinol in Finland.

Resorcinol is a suspected endocrine disruptor that affects thyroid function by inhibiting thyroxin peroxidase. It may also have an impact on iodine uptake. Resorcinol has various uses; for example in the manufacture of rubber products and in wood adhesives, flame retardants, UV stabilizers, and dyes. It is also used in personal care products such as hair colorants, anti-acne preparations, and peels. The aim of this study was to assess both environmental background exposure and occupational exposure to resorcinol in Finland. We investigated occupational exposure in hairdresser work and in the m

Environmental asbestos exposure and risk of mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is commonly considered an occupational disease occurring as a result of asbestos exposure in the workplace. Several avenues for environmental asbestos exposures have been described and may be associated with asbestos related disease, including mesothelioma. Worker take-home asbestos, or para-occupational exposure, has been well documented and is the most commonly reported pathway for asbestos exposure among mesothelioma cases that do not have history of occupational asbestos exposure. Observational studies have evaluated several communities with elevated mesothelioma incidence and

Environmental exposure to pesticides and respiratory health.

Respiratory effects of environmental exposure to pesticides are debated. Here we aimed to review epidemiological studies published up until 2013, using the PubMed database. 20 studies dealing with respiratory health and non-occupational pesticide exposure were identified, 14 carried out on children and six on adults. In four out of nine studies in children with biological measurements, mothers' dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) blood levels during pregnancy were associated with asthma and wheezing in young children. An association was also found between permethrin in indoor air during pre

Environmental exposures, socioeconomics, disparities, and the kidneys.

Kidney disease disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minority populations, the poor, and the socially disadvantaged. The excess risk of kidney disease among minority and disadvantaged populations can only be partially explained by an excess of diabetes, hypertension, and poor access to preventive care. Disparities in the environmental exposure to nephrotoxicants have been documented in minority and disadvantaged populations and may explain some of the excess risk of kidney disease. High-level environmental and occupational exposure to lead, cadmium, and mercury are known to cause specif

Environmental fate and exposure; neonicotinoids and fipronil.

Systemic insecticides are applied to plants using a wide variety of methods, ranging from foliar sprays to seed treatments and soil drenches. Neonicotinoids and fipronil are among the most widely used pesticides in the world. Their popularity is largely due to their high toxicity to invertebrates, the ease and flexibility with which they can be applied, their long persistence, and their systemic nature, which ensures that they spread to all parts of the target crop. However, these properties also increase the probability of environmental contamination and exposure of nontarget organisms. Envir

Hair as a biomarker of environmental manganese exposure.

The absence of well-validated biomarkers of manganese (Mn) exposure in children remains a major obstacle for studies of Mn toxicity. We developed a hair cleaning methodology to establish the utility of hair as an exposure biomarker for Mn and other metals (Pb, Cr, Cu), using ICPMS, scanning electron microscopy, and laser ablation ICPMS to evaluate cleaning efficacy. Exogenous metal contamination on hair that was untreated or intentionally contaminated with dust or Mn-contaminated water was effectively removed using a cleaning method of 0.5%Triton X-100 sonication plus 1 N nitric acid sonicatio

[Mercury in hair--an indicator of environmental exposure].

Mercury concentration in human hair is used as an indicator of long-term environmental exposure to mercury. Over 90% of mercury in hair occur in the metylmercury form. Exposure to mercury almost entirely results from the consumption of seafood and meat of big sea mammals. This paper presents a review of toxic effects of mercury, biological monitoring of exposure to mercury and biological levels of mercury in hair and blood of people consuming a variety of fish diets. It also describes the methods most often used for preliminary sample preparation and applied to determining mercury hair levels.

Environmental exposure and children's health in China.

Concerns regarding adverse health effects of exposure to environmental pollutants among children are increasing. This subject area is particularly important in China because of environmental pollution problems associated with rapid development and a large population. The authors provide what is, to their knowledge, the first review in China of English- and Chinese-language literature regarding the current status of environmental exposures to children in China and the impact of these exposures on the health of children. Children in China are exposed to diverse environmental pollutants, includin

Environmental exposure of a community to airborne trichloroethylene.

School officials and community citizens in Georgia were concerned about the airborne trichloroethylene (TCE) that was emanating from a nearby industrial facility that used TCE as a degreaser. No measurements of airborne TCE in the community were taken by public health officials or the industrial facility. The regulation of release of TCE from this facility was governed, in part, by mathematical model predictions of dispersion into the community. In support of community health concerns, the authors collected a limited number of outdoor and indoor air samples in the affected community, including

Environmental and occupational exposure to benzene in Thailand.

Exposure to benzene in air is a concern in Thailand, particularly since it was observed that the incidence of blood-related cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma, has increased in the past few decades. In Bangkok, the mean atmospheric levels of benzene on main roads and in schools were 33.71 and 8.25 ppb, respectively, while in gasoline service stations and petrochemical factories the mean ambient levels were 64.78 and 66.24 ppb, respectively. Cloth vendors (22.61 ppb) and grilled-meat vendors (28.19 ppb) working on the roadsides were exposed to significantly higher levels of benzene than the

Environmental exposure to asbestos in eastern Turkey.

In this study, the authors investigated the prevalence of asbestos-related disorders among the inhabitants of Güzelyurt, a town in Malatya, located in eastern Turkey. The authors examined river bed, white soil, and stucco samples taken from various locales in Güzelyurt, and they confirmed the presence of tremolite and chrysotile asbestos fibers. Subjects (N = 920; 449 males and 471 females) were examined by photofluoroscopy. Eighty-five patients (9.2%) had asbestos-related radiological findings; risk increased with age. Calcified pleural plaques were seen more frequently in individuals > or =

Wegener's granulomatosis: role of environmental exposures.

OBJECTIVE: The etiology of Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) remains unknown. The predominant involvement of the airways and the presence of neutrophilic alveolitis at disease onset have led us to postulate that an inhaled agent may trigger the onset of WG. This study is designed to analyze differences in self-reported environmental exposures between patients with WG and various control populations. METHODS: We conducted a standard interviewer-administered questionnaire case controlled survey of 101 patients with WG, 54 healthy controls, 24 patients with sarcoidosis or idiopathic pulmonary fibros

Environmental exposure to cadmium and human birthweight.

Fetal toxicity of cadmium (Cd) is well documented in rodents. However, little information is available regarding the human fetus. To investigate the effect of low levels of Cd on the human placenta and the consequences on birthweight, we conducted a study of 102 mothers and their newborns in an obstetrical care unit. Placental and hair samples were collected at delivery to determine Cd concentrations. The main finding of this study was the relationship between a decrease in birthweight and an increase of newborn hair Cd which varied in the presence of placental calcification. In cases of paren

Thrombocytopenia associated with environmental exposure to polyurethane.

Few chemicals in the environment have been implicated as causes of isolated thrombocytopenia, and the evidence is usually less than convincing because the patients were not rechallenged with the chemical in vivo. In the present paper, a child is reported with the onset of thrombocytopenia in temporal association with environmental exposure to polyurethane. Five years after the initial thrombocytopenia had resolved, an inadvertent in vivo rechallenge with environmental polyurethane resulted in recurrence of the thrombocytopenia. This recurrence, together with the fact that only 1-4% of cases of

Childhood Environmental Exposures and Adult Disease.

The association of early life adverse events with worse adult outcomes was first proposed by David Barker, the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD). Subsequently we have learned that adverse exposures are not merely important during pregnancy, but also exert transgenerational effects. Most of our knowledge derives from studies of nicotine and tobacco exposure. Adverse intrauterine exposures lead to low birth weight and premature delivery; altered airway and parenchymal structure; altered immune function; sensitization to later adverse exposures; and premature aging manifest by p
