Vitamin A homeostasis endangered by environmental pollutants.

Normal vitamin A function depends on adequate stores of the vitamin, a finely regulated supply of the vitamin to target tissues, and an ability of cells to generate functionally active forms of the vitamin. Both endogenous and exogenous factors can adversely affect vitamin A homeostasis. Polyhalogenated aromatic hydrocarbons are ubiquitous environmental pollutants and cause severe disturbances in vitamin A metabolism, manifested by an accelerated metabolism and breakdown of vitamin A and its metabolites and a depletion of vitamin A from the body; this sequence of events accounts for the vitami

Environmental pollutants and male infertility: Effects on CatSper.

Infertility is a growing health concern among many couples worldwide. Men account for half of infertility cases. CatSper, a sperm-specific Ca2+ channel, is expressed on the cell membrane of mammalian sperm. CatSper plays an important role in male fertility because it facilitates the entry of Ca2+ necessary for the rapid change in sperm motility, thereby allowing it to navigate the hurdles of the female reproductive tract and successfully locate the egg. Many pollutants present in the environment have been shown to affect the functions of CatSper and sperm, which is a matter of capital importan

Engineering dioxygenases for efficient degradation of environmental pollutants.

Dioxygenases have recently been engineered to improve their capabilities for environmental pollutant degradation. The techniques used to achieve this include in vitro DNA shuffling and subunit or domain exchanges between dioxygenases of different bacterial origins. Such evolved enzymes acquire novel and enhanced degradation capabilities of xenobiotic compounds, such as polychlorinated biphenyls, trichloroethylene and a variety of aromatic compounds. Hybrid strains in which the evolved genes are integrated into the chromosomal operons exhibit efficient degradation of xenobiotic chlorinated comp

Environmental pollutants in relation to complications of pregnancy.

Certain complications of pregnancy, e.g., threatened spontaneous abortion, toxemia, emesis, and anemia, were studied in pregnant women living in industrial areas contaminated by smelters and the petrochemical industry. Exposure to lead or aromatic hydrocarbons was assessed in parallel by the determination of these agents or their metabolites in blood and urine. Comparison of respective exposure levels was made between women with normal pregnancies and those with complications. Significantly higher levels of lead in blood and increased excretion of the metabolic products of organic solvents wer

Environmental pollutants and adrenal steroids biosynthesis in elderly.

INTRODUCTION: We have recently described relationships between environmental contaminants (ECs) and sex-hormones in the elderly. The present study investigates whether blood concentrations of four classes of ECs also associated with concentrations of five adrenal steroids (AS), cortisol and its four precursors. METHODS: Plasma samples from participants of the cross-sectional population-based Prospective Investigation of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors study (PIVUS, 70-year-old men and women, n = 950) were analyzed using validated mass spectrometry-based methods for four AS: pregnenolone (P

[Environmental air pollutants and the risk of cancer].

The increased combustion of fossil fuels is one of the main reasons for the hazardous changes in the atmospheric composition. The sources of air pollution in urban areas include diesel motor vehicles, residential wood burning, and certain industrial processes. The types of air pollution include gases(eg, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone)and suspended particulate matter(PM)such as PM2.5 and PM10 in diesel exhaust particles. PM2.5 refers to particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. Long-term exposure to PM2.5 can increase the cardiovascular disease risk and lung can

Neurobehavioural investigations in adolescents exposed to environmental pollutants.

Environmental exposures to industrial pollutants have been associated with lowered intelligence and behavioural problems. The Flemish Environmental and Health Study focussed on biomonitoring of exposure and associated health effects. This part of the study investigated neurobehavioural performance in adolescents in relation to lead (blood Pb), cadmium (urine Cd), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB concentration of congeners 138, 153 and 180) and compounds with 'dioxin-like' activity (measured by the CALUX-assay). One-hundred and twenty girls and 80 boys (mean age 17.4 years) were enrolled. The NES

The mutagenicity of organotin compounds as environmental pollutants.

The mutagenicity of 14 organotin compounds which have been reported to be environmental pollutants, their environmental metabolites and inorganic tin (SnCl4) was studied. The experiments were carried out by a modification of the conventional Salmonella assay. Each tested chemical was removed by washing the tested strain with phosphate buffer, before the strain with top agar was poured onto minimal glucose agar. By this method, we were able to estimate the mutagenicity of organotin compounds which had antibacterial activity. It was apparent that mono-n-butyltin oxide, n-butyltin trichloride, di

Environmental Pollution from Pharmaceuticals.

Pharmaceuticals are invaluable allies in human and veterinary medicine, but their indiscriminate use can transform them into formidable pollutants-a threat that remains largely underestimated. The growth of the pharmaceutical market has increased the environmental presence of drugs, both as original compounds during production and as metabolites following administration. Particularly concerning is the presence of antibiotics in wastewater, which contributes to the development and spread of bacterial resistance. This review analyzes the primary causes of environmental pharmaceutical pollution a

Environmental Pollution and the Developing Lung.

In this review, we discuss the impact of environmental tobacco smoke and particulate and gaseous air pollutants derived from fossil fuel combustion on a particularly vulnerable population, infants and children. Indoor and outdoor air pollutants exacerbate chronic respiratory diseases and lower respiratory tract infections. However, there is an even more alarming impact of antenatal air pollution exposures. There are several reports in rodents and monkeys that maternal exposure to tobacco smoke or fossil fuel-generated air pollutants causes in utero growth retardation, lung remodeling, and immu

Environmental pollution and acne: Chloracne.

Environmental pollutants can result in a variant of acne called 'chloracne'. Chloracne is caused by systemic exposure to certain halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons 'chloracnegens', and is considered to be one of the most sensitive indicators of systemic poisoning by these compounds. Dioxin is the most potent environmental chloracnegen. Most cases of chloracne have resulted from occupational and non-occupational exposures, non-occupational chloracne mainly resulted from contaminated industrial wastes and contaminated food products. Non-inflammatory comedones and straw-colored cysts are the prima

Environmental costs of mercury pollution.

Mercury (Hg) has been used for millennia in many applications, primarily in artisanal mining and as an electrode in the chlor-alkali industry. It is anthropogenically emitted as a pollutant from coal fired power plants and naturally emitted, primarily from volcanoes. Its unique chemical characteristics enable global atmospheric transport and it is deposited after various processes, ultimately ending up in one of its final sinks, such as incorporated into deep sediment or bioaccumulated, primarily in the marine environment. All forms of Hg have been established as toxic, and there have been no

In the past years Environmental Medicine has established itself in the departments of community medicine. The clients of these health offices as well as those attending other Environmental Outpatient Departments and who suffer from anxiety in connection with environmental pollution show increasingly psychomatic and even psychiatric disturbances. This paper demonstrates, from the psychiatrists as well as the environmental physicians point of view, the relationship between psychological disturbances and environmental pollution in a typical case-history. The differentiation between possibly toxic

Environmental pollution and carcinogenic risk.

In this study, the relationship between environmental pollution and environmental carcinogens has been investigated. There is an alarming increase of diverse natural and man-made carcinogens in consumer goods and industrial wastes. Research carried out in Ankara and Istanbul has found detergents and arsenic in the drinking water to be 140 times higher than the World Health Organization (WHO standards. In addition, air pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, particles, and fumes have been determined to be 4 times higher than the WHO standards. A similar situation has been noted in the soil pollution

Environmental pollution and human health.

Contacts of humans with chemicals from the environment occur via air, water or food. In the past most attention was paid to the contamination of water. Well developed and stringent legislation exists in most countries, although health impairments never occurred from environmental chemicals in drinking water. Xenobiotics in water mainly have a marker function for the general pollution of the environment. Therefore measures to detect and eliminate the sources of contamination are often inappropriately taken. For some persistent and (usually) lipophilic xenobiotics in food, especially from animal

[Environmental characterization: air pollution].

During the years of the epidemiological group-diagnostic examination (1982-1986) it was attempted to characterize the atmospheric air pollution in the industrial Rhine-Main area (Wiesbaden and Frankfurt) and, in comparison, in two control areas (Freiburg with the adjacent High Black Forest and the Starnberg area). For this the measurements of the air measuring stations of the network for emissions of the German Umweltbundesamt (Federal Environmental Protection Agency) at Berlin and Frankfurt were used and well as those of the Hessische Landesanstalt für Umwelt, Wiesbaden (Hessian Office for En
