Systemic vasculitides are autoimmune diseases characterized by vascular inflammation. Most types of vasculitis are thought to result from antigen exposure in genetically susceptible individuals, suggesting a likely role for environmental triggers in these conditions. Seasonal and geographic variations in incidence provide insight into the potential role of environmental exposures in these diseases. Many data support infectious triggers in some vasculitides, whereas other studies have identified noninfectious triggers, such as airborne pollutants, silica, smoking, and heavy metals. We review th

Environmental, or exogenous, dermatitis is comprised of irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, which account for 80% and 20% of cases of contact dermatitis, respectively. Contact dermatitis is extremely common, and failure to diagnose this entity may result in overlooking a potentially curable driver of disease. In this review, we describe how clinical features, such as morphology or history, can assist in distinguishing exogenous from endogenous causes of dermatitis, and allergic from irritant contact dermatitis. Additionally, we provide an overview of common contact allergens and how derm

We address the impact of the tropical environment on the human nervous system using the multifaceted approach characteristic of environmental neurology. First, environmental factors are examined according to their nature (physical, chemical and biological) and in relation to human activity and behavior. Some factors are specific to the tropics (climate and infections), while others are non-specific (chemicals, human communities and their way of life). Second, we examine the major role of human adaptation to the success of Homo sapiens, with emphasis on the linkage between thermoregulation and

BACKGROUND: Environmental factors are a major cause of poor health worldwide. The most solid evidence is for air pollution, leading to increased disability-adjusted life years. Outdoor temperature and other seasonal climate changes may also influence cardiovascular health, according to their direct modulation of air pollution. Moreover, an increasing body of evidence associates environmental exposure to noise with poor cardiovascular outcome, and in particular with hypertension.
METHODS: This review is aimed at reviewing current evidence about the role of these environmental factors in cardio

Many chemicals in the environment, in particular those with estrogenic activity, can disrupt the programming of endocrine signaling pathways that are established during development and result in adverse consequences that may not be apparent until much later in life. Most recently, obesity and diabetes join the growing list of adverse consequences that have been associated with developmental exposure to environmental estrogens during critical stages of differentiation. These diseases are quickly becoming significant public health issues and are fast reaching epidemic proportions worldwide. In t

INTRODUCTION: Clinical environmental medicine deals with environmental effects on human health in individual patients. Patients seek medical advice for problems of many different kinds that may be due to environmental exposures; such exposures must be considered carefully along with other potential causes. An environmental medical assessment should include thorough medical history-taking and physical examination, the formulation of a differential diagnosis, and (whenever indicated) human biomonitoring, site inspections, and ambient monitoring.
METHODS: This review of clinically relevant envir

In conclusion, several studies indicate that there is an association between cigarette smoking and adverse reproductive outcomes in women as well as men. Some studies indicate that alcohol consumption impairs the reproductive capacity of women. Exposures to PCE in the dry cleaning industry, toluene in the printing business, ethylene oxide and mixed solvents have been associated with decreased fecundity. Abnormalities in sperm production have been found in men exposed to radiant heat or heavy metals. Environmental exposure to chlorinated hydrocarbons (e.g., DDT, PCB, pentachlorophenol, hexachlo

Beside genetic factors environmental factors largely determine prevalence and severity of bronchial asthma. They seem to explain better the large time-related and geographic differences in prevalence, supported by several recent studies. Among environmental risk factors, those present indoors, linked to our modern homes, are considered most important. This applies to early exposure to allergens, especially to house dust mite, first leading to sensitisation and later to asthma. The indoor air may also be contaminated by tobacco smoke and other substances like nitric oxide, acting directly on th

Environmental conditions can be the driving force behind an epizootic. Environmental changes may favor growth of a particular species, which results in increased contact rates and spread of a disease. We examine this particular phenomenon in SI and SIS models and use it to explain the possible disease outbreaks in nature. Either infected individuals recover from the disease (SIS model) or suffer disease fatalities (SI model). Epizootic models for a single population are examined where contact rate depends on population size. A reproductive number R is defined that depends on environmental carr

Chromium is a d-block transitional element with many industrial uses. It occurs naturally in various crustal materials and is discharged to the environment as industrial waste. Although it can occur in a number of oxidation states, only 3+ and 6+ are found in environmental systems. The environmental behavior of Cr is largely a function of its oxidation state. Hexavalent Cr compounds (mainly chromates and dichromates) are considered toxic to a variety of terrestrial and aquatic organisms and are mobile in soil/water systems, much more so than trivalent Cr compounds. This is largely because of d

Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphorus compound that displays broad-spectrum insecticidal activity against a number of important arthropod pests. As a result, it is employed in a wide variety of agricultural and specialty pest control scenarios. Various formulations of chlorpyrifos have been developed to maximize stability and contact with pests and minimize human exposure. From corn agriculture in the United States to termite control in Japan to cotton agriculture in Egypt to citrus horticulture in Spain, chloropyrifos has been successfully employed to combat insect and other arthropod pests thr

In 1992, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a "Черновик" assessment of ETS and lung cancer in adults and respiratory disorders in children. Relying on weak and inconclusive epidemiological data, the supposed similarity between ETS and MS, the presence of "known or suspected carcinogens" in MS and by extrapolation in ETS, and the "biological plausibility" of an adverse relationship between ETS and health, the EPA recommended that ETS be classified as a "Group A (known human) carcinogen." Fundamental physical and quantitative chemical differences among ETS, MS, and SS and human e

Recent applications of modern neurobiological techniques have provided an impetus to understanding mechanisms of neurotoxicity. Environmental chemicals, including aluminium, and the organocompounds of mercury, lead and tin, may trigger neurodegenerative disorders. Regional differences in toxicity may be related to the complexity of the amino acid excitatory systems and the ability of individual cell systems to handle long-term abusive stimulation.

A study of firefighter exposures was undertaken at the request of the U.S. Fire Administration. This work was part of a larger study which included field evaluation of the performance of the self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) worn by firefighters during structural firefighting. Measurements were made for a variety of contaminants including CO, CO2, benzene, HCN, HCl, H2SO4, HF, acrolein, CH4, formaldehyde and PNAs. Many of the analyses were performed by collection of bag samples followed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy using a field mobile spectrometer. Measurements were also

The processes that control the environmental chemistry of chromium include redox transformation, precipitation/dissolution, and adsorption/desorption reactions. Commonly occurring reductants, such as ferrous iron and organic material, can transform Cr(VI) to Cr(III), but manganese oxides are the only inorganic oxidants found in the environment that cause the rapid oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI). In the trivalent state, chromium readily forms compounds such as Cr(OH)3 and (Cr,Fe)(OH)3. These solids show amphoteric solubility behavior, with hydroxo complexes being the dominant aqueous species of

For almost a century now numerous examples of acute and subacute hepatic injury from exposure to toxic agents in the occupational or non-occupational environment have been extensively studied and are well documented, but such events are comparatively rare. In contrast, epidemiological data associating exposure to environmental chemicals with chronic liver disease or primary hepatic malignancies in the human is scarce as compared with the vast body of literature concerning chronic pulmonary disease as a consequence of exposure at the workplace. Large-scale industrial production of many newly sy
