[Ultrastructural characteristics of the specialized ependyma of the 3d cerebral ventricle in rats].

The ultrastructure of the specialized ependyma of the third cerebrals ventricle was studied in males of albino Wistar rats, 160--180 g of weight. The ependyma lining the inferolateral walls (alpha-tanycytes) was found to differ ultrastructurally from that of the floor of the third ventricle or of the median eminence (beta-tanycytes). These differences are assumed to reflect a specific functional differentiation of the different types of tanycytes. Various types of microvesicles and a system of peculiar membranous cavities are described in the alpha-and beta-tanycytes. These structures are supp

History of research concerning the ependyma: a view from inside the human brain.

The history of research concerning ependymal cells is reviewed. Cilia were identified along the surface of the cerebral ventricles c1835. Numerous anatomical and histopathological studies in the late 1800's showed irregularities in the ependymal surface that were thought to be indicative of specific pathologies such as syphilis; this was subsequently disproven. The evolution of thoughts about functions of cilia, the possible role of ependyma in the brain-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, and the relationship of ependyma to the subventricular zone germinal cells is discussed. How advances in light a

VWA3A-derived ependyma promoter drives increased therapeutic protein secretion into the CSF.

Recombinant adeno-associated viral vectors (rAAVs) are a promising strategy to treat neurodegenerative diseases because of their ability to infect non-dividing cells and confer long-term transgene expression. Despite an ever-growing library of capsid variants, widespread delivery of AAVs in the adult central nervous system remains a challenge. We have previously demonstrated successful distribution of secreted proteins by infection of the ependyma, a layer of post-mitotic epithelial cells lining the ventricles of the brain and central column of the spinal cord, and subsequent protein delivery

Pathogenic role of autoantibodies at the ependyma in autoimmune disorders of the central nervous system.

Ependymal cells make up the epithelial monolayer that lines the brain ventricles and the spinal cord central canal that are filled with cerebrospinal fluid. The ependyma has several functions, including regulating solute exchange between the cerebrospinal fluid and parenchyma, controlling microcirculation of cerebrospinal fluid via coordinated ciliary beating, and acting as a partial barrier. Dysregulation of these functions can lead to waste clearance impairment, cerebrospinal fluid accumulation, hydrocephalus, and more. A role for ependymal cells in a variety of neurological disorders has be

Heterogeneous occurrence of aquaporin-4 in the ependyma and in the circumventricular organs in rat and chicken.

Aquaporins are selective water channel proteins critical in volume homeostasis. In the CNS AQP4 predominates, localized mainly in the glia limitans, the perivascular endfeet and ependyma. The present immunofluorescent study reveals the distribution of aquaporin-4 in the circumventricular organs in rat and chicken brains. The ventricular ependyma (especially in the third one), the subfornical organ, the area postrema, the rat pineal body (in part), and the vascular organ of lamina terminalis were marked by intense immunopositivity. Several areas, however, proved to be immunonegative: the centra

Damage to the choroid plexus, ependyma and subependyma as a consequence of perinatal hypoxia/ischemia.

Cerebral hypoxia/ischemia (H/I) of the premature infant is a major cause of cerebral palsy and mental retardation. An important determinant of the ultimate outcome from this insult is the extent to which the stem cells and progenitors in the brain are affected. Irreversible injury to these cells will impair normal development of the infant's brain and, hence, its function. In the present study, we examine early intervals after H/I to identify which cells in the periventricular region are most vulnerable. At 0 h of recovery from a perinatal H/I insult, the choroid plexus shows extensive necroti

The development of ependyma in the human fetal brain: an immunohistological and electron microscopic study.

The stratified inner layer of the embryonic fetal brain, the ventricular zone (VZ), contains glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-positive cell bodies of radial glia. The adult cerebral ventricle is lined by a single layer of cuboidal, ciliated common ependymal cells which are, immunohistologically, GFAP negative. In late gestation, the ventricular lining is formed by tanycytes, ependymal cells with short, intensely GFAP-positive basal fibres. The development of ependyma was examined, morphologically and immunohistologically, in human fetal brain from between 11 weeks gestation to 6 months p

[A scanning electron microscopy study of the ependyma in the lateral cerebral ventricle in humans].

The apical surface of ependymal cells in the cornu anterius of the lateral ventricle of the brain was studied in man. The surface of ependymal cells displays varied differentiation, the cells have microvilli, spherical processes, and cilia. In the cornu anterius ependymal cells without cilia as well as with one cilium and even several cilia were observed. Different types of cells occur in groups forming so-called ependymal areas, which are constituents of the lining of the ventricular walls. Ependymal areas with a large number of cilia were recorded along with areas without cilia and so-called

Secondary Brain Injury Following Neonatal Intraventricular Hemorrhage: The Role of the Ciliated Ependyma.

Intraventricular hemorrhage is recognized as a leading cause of hydrocephalus in the developed world and a key determinant of neurodevelopmental outcome following premature birth. Even in the absence of haemorrhagic infarction or posthaemorrhagic hydrocephalus, there is increasing evidence of neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental sequelae. The pathophysiology underlying this injury is thought to be due to a primary destructive and secondary developmental insult, but the exact mechanisms remain elusive and this has resulted in a paucity of therapeutic interventions. The presence of blood with

Ependyma of the goat. I. The third cerebral ventricle: scanning electron microscopy study.

Ependymal surface of the III-rd cerebral ventricle of 13 goat-males and females and in the testicular hermaphrodite was studied by means of scanning electron microscope. The ependymal surface structure of infundibular recess is in relation to the sex, in case of females to the ovarian cycle phase and in males to the season. The supraependymal cells were always present with the exception of the "rest" period of males. The smallest number of the SEC was found in females during anestrus period, the highest one during proestrus and in the hermaphrodite. The supraependymal cells of goats resemble m

[Types of 3d cerebral ventricle ependyma in sheep and their localization using segment analysis].

Attention was focused to the determination of the topographical locality of different ependyma types and determination of their extent by the method of segment analysis. Brain samples of five sheep of the Slovak Merino breed were studied. Excised brains were transversally cut into segments from the frontal pole at 5mm intervals. The eighth, ninth and tenth slices were cast in paraffin and were cut in simultaneous series at 300 microns intervals, the cutting thickness being 10 microns. The paraffin slices were stained with haematoxylin-eosine, Gömöri's chromium haematoxylin, and by the aldehyde

A micromorphological and histoenzymological study on the third ventricular ependyma of the teleost Clarias batrachus (L.).

The circum ventricular region of C. batrachus is highly vascular and the ependymal cells appear differently when stained with haematoxylin, silver impregnation and Golgi-Cox techniques. The ventricule has PAS and AF positive material and some ependymal cells themselves are PAS positive. Few AF positive peptidergic and several AF negative small neurons have liquor contacting terminals. Golgi-Cox preparations reveal a variety of forms among the tanycytes. Their basal processes which are barbed or studded with varicosities, usually end on blood vessels and other neuronal elements. These basal pro

Hyperechoic ependyma in preterm infants: sonographic features associated with ependymal injury and complex hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Hyperechoic ependyma is a known ultrasound finding in preterm infants with intraventricular hemorrhage but its prognostic implications remain uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether hyperechoic ependyma identified on head ultrasound in preterm neonates is associated with intraventricular hemorrhage severity, post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus of prematurity, multiloculated hydrocephalus, and other complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included 184 preterm neonates (<37 weeks' gestation) who underwent early (≤10 days) and/or late (>10 days) hea
