Chinese classical formulas, firstly recorded in Shanghan Zabing Lun by Zhang Zhongjing in the Han dynasty, have been widely used by traditional Chinese medicine physicians for thousands of years due to its good compatibility, strict structures, significant clinical efficacy and less adverse effects. Ephedra associated prescriptions, widely used in the treatment of skin diseases, are famous representative prescriptions in Chinese classical formulas. The commonly used Ephedra associated prescriptions include Mahuang Lianqiao Chixiaodou decoction, Maxing Shigan decoction, Maxing Yigan decoction,

OBJECTIVE: To study the influence of Ephedra sinica on the lipid metabolism of lipocyte.
METHOD: The rat's epididymal lipocytes were used to observe the effect of Ephedra sinica in lipogenesis from 14C-glucose and lipolysis promoted by norepinephrine (NE).
RESULT: Ephedra sinica can promote lipogenesis from glucose, which is related with the pH value of matrix solution; and it also can inhibit the lipolysis promoted by NE.
CONCLUSION: Ephedra sinica can promote the lipogenesis of lipocyte that is not induced by ephedrine, the mechanism being similar to that of insulin.

PURPOSE: The goal of our study is to test whether a naturally occurring plant, Ephedra aphylla, will show antiproliferative ability against tested cell lines and to test its anti-inflammatory and antioxidative potentials.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our study, we used four solvents with different polarities - aqueous, chloroform, methanol, and n-hexane - to extract different compounds from the aerial parts of E. aphylla. Antioxidant activity of E. aphylla was determined by measuring nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging activities. The anti-inflammatory activity was studied

Ma-huang is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb derived from EPHEDRA: sinica Stapf and other EPHEDRA: species, used to treat asthma, nose and lung congestion, and fever with anhidrosis. It contains 0.5-2.5% by weight of total alkaloids, of which ephedrine accounts for 30 to 90%. Recently, large amounts of ma-huang were used as a source of ephedrine in many dietary supplements formulated for weight reduction, because ephedrine has been found effective in inducing weight loss in diet-restricted obese patients. However, indiscriminate consumption of ma-huang-containing products has resulted in m

PURPOSE: Japanese traditional (Kampo) medicines containing ephedra are used to relieve symptoms of the common cold during pregnancy. The risks associated with perinatal outcomes, however, remain unclear. Thus, we evaluated the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes associated with the use of Kampo medicines containing ephedra during pregnancy using data from the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study (TMM BirThree Cohort Study).
METHODS: Questionnaires were distributed to pregnant women who participated in the TMM BirThree Cohort Study at approximately weeks 12 an

Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra in the OH- and NH-stretching regions have been measured for six pharmaceutical molecules in the ephedra class, (1S,2R)-norephedrine, (1), (1S,2S)-norpseudoephedrine (2), (1S,2R)-ephedrine (3), (1S,2S)-pseudoephedrine (4), (1S,2R)-N-methylephedrine (5) and (1S,2S)-N-methylpseudoephedrine (6), all in dilute C2Cl4 solution. Ab initio calculations of geometries and vibrational frequencies for a number of conformers of 1 to 6 have been carried out. The recently developed locally distributed origin gauge model for VCD was used to calculate VCD spectra of

Since Ephedra Herba (ephedra) and its major alkaloid ephedrine were prohibited as dietary supplements due to their adverse effects on the cardiovascular and central nervous system (CNS), most studies have focused on their amphetamine-like effects and neurotoxicity. However, ephedra also has a long history of use in the treatment of various CNS diseases (known as "Zhong Feng" syndrome) according to two thousand years of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) records. Pharmacokinetic reports have also demonstrated that alkaloids of ephedra can quickly penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB) once abs

The effect of Ephedrae herba (Mao) on histamine content was investigated. When rat basophilic leukemia (RBL-2H3) cells were incubated for 48 h with Mao, Mao decreased histamine content in a concentration-dependent manner. However, the ratio of released histamine to total histamine was scarcely affected by Mao treatment when RBL-2H3 cells were stimulated by ionomycin. On the other hand, the content of β-hexosaminidase, another marker of degranulation, was only slightly decreased by Mao. The expression level of the active form (53 kDa) of L-histidine decarboxylase, the enzyme which synthesizes h

The appropriate amount of oversight for dietary supplements has been a subject of debate for over a decade. This debate has come to a head recently with herbal ephedra, which may be associated with adverse events including heart attack, stroke, seizure, and death. This article reviews and puts into context recent findings on the safety concerns related to ephedra, based primarily on adverse event reports. It presents the response from industry and the FDA in light of this evidence, and describes additional steps taken by other groups who believe that more restrictive action is required. The ar

Ephedra sinica has a long history in medicine, i.e., as the first medicinal plant for treating wind-chill colds. However, few studies have shown its material basis and mechanism of action, so this article mainly focuses on these two issues. Rats were stimulated by fan blowing and low temperature for 7 days, following which alkaloid extract (SWJ), non-alkaloid extract (FSWJ), and polysaccharide extract (DT) from Ephedra sinica (MH) were administered for 4 days. First, the body temperature, sweat spots, activity status, and cough-related indexes were detected to screen the pharmacodynamic materi

Four popular ephedra-free dietary supplements were evaluated for their effects on heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and electrocardiographic (ECG) parameters. Twelve healthy men participated in a study randomized for product sequence, with a 21-day washout period between supplement-administration phases. Throughout the study, Holter monitors were used to assess ECG and HR activity. BP was assessed automatically on multiple occasions. The supplements were ingested three times daily for 3 days. Caffeine content, microbial load, and serum caffeine concentrations were determined. Mean systolic

In response to concerns regarding the safety of ephedra-containing dietary supplements, manufacturers have marketed "ephedra-free" products. Many of these contain synephrine, a sympathomimetic amine from the plant Citrus aurantium. Synephrine is structurally similar to ephedrine and has vasoconstrictor properties. We describe a 38-year-old patient with ischemic stroke associated with an ephedra-free dietary supplement containing synephrine and caffeine. The patient presented with memory loss and unsteady gait after taking 1 or 2 capsules per day of a dietary supplement (Stacker 2 Ephedra-Free)

Human norovirus (HuNoV) is a major cause of acute gastroenteritis and foodborne diseases worldwide with public health concern, yet no antiviral therapies have been developed. In this study, we aimed to screen crude drugs, which are components of Japanese traditional medicine, ''Kampo'' to see their effects on HuNoV infection using a reproducible HuNoV cultivation system, stem-cell derived human intestinal organoids/enteroids (HIOs). Among the 22 crude drugs tested, Ephedra herba significantly inhibited HuNoV infection in HIOs. A time-of-drug addition experiment suggested that this crude drug m

Mao is one component of various traditional herbal medicines. We examined the effects of Mao on an acute liver failure model treated with d-galactosamine (GalN) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The lethality of mice administrated Mao with GalN/LPS was significantly decreased compared with that in mice without Mao. Hepatic apoptosis and inflammatory cell infiltration were slight in Mao-treated mice. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and total bilirubin (T.Bil) activity, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) levels and caspase 8, 9, and 3 activity in the liver were significantly lower in mice

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Species of Ephedra (Gnetales) produce sugar-rich pollination drops on their ovules, which capture wind-borne pollen but may also attract insects. The relative importance of wind and insects as pollen vectors may vary with habitat characteristics. We evaluated the relative contributions of wind and insects to the reproductive success of three Ephedra species-E. multiflora, E. breana and E. triandra-inhabiting contrasting environments in northwestern Argentina, from the open, high-elevation Puna to the structurally complex Monte Desert ecoregion.
METHODS: We conducted open

Ephedrae Herba (Ephedra), known as "MaHuang" in China, is the dried straw stem that is associated with the lung and urinary bladder meridians. At present, more than 60 species of Ephedra plants have been identified, which contain more than 100 compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, sugars, and organic phenolic acids. This herb has long been used to treat asthma, liver disease, skin disease, and other diseases, and has shown unique efficacy in the treatment of COVID-19 infection. Because alkaloids are the main components causing toxicity, the safety of Ephedra must be considered.
