First record of the adult of Cymbalcloeon confirming its position in Baetidae (Insecta, Ephemeroptera).

BACKGROUND: The nymphs of Cymbalcloeon sartorii Suttinun et al., 2020 present several unusual characters such as having only three pairs of ventral gills. The imaginal stage of this recently described genus remains unknown. NEW INFORMATION: In Spring 2025, tens of nymphs as well as morphologically and molecularly associated adults of this species were collected in southwestern China. This represents the first recorded occurrence of the genus in China, and indeed, the first report outside Thailand. The male imagos have tiny bodies, clear median longitudinal ridge on mesonotum, one pair of wing

Characterizing Hox genes in mayflies (Ephemeroptera), with Hexagenia limbata as a new mayfly model.

BACKGROUND: Hox genes are key regulators of appendage development in the insect body plan. The body plan of mayfly (Ephemeroptera) nymphs differs due to the presence of abdominal appendages called gills. Despite mayflies' phylogenetic position in Paleoptera and novel morphology amongst insects, little is known of their developmental genetics, such as the appendage-regulating Hox genes. To address this issue we present an annotated, early instar transcriptome and embryonic expression profiles for Antennapedia, Ultrabithorax, and Abdominal A proteins in the mayfly Hexagenia limbata, identify put

Burrowing mayfly Ephemera orientalis (Ephemeroptera: Ephemeridae) as a new test species for pesticide toxicity.

The potential of mayfly Ephemera orientalis McLachlan eggs and first-instar larvae in ecotoxicological testing was investigated. Both stages of E. orientalis showed high tolerance to various environmental variables, such as water temperature, pH, water hardness, and dissolved organic carbon. Toxicological assays were conducted with three insecticides (emamectin benzoate, endosulfan, and cypermethrin), one fungicide (mancozeb), and one herbicide (paraquat dichloride). The two toxicity endpoints for the assay were the 14-day egg median hatching rate (EHC50) in static and renewal exposure systems

Hidden taxonomic and taphonomic diversity revealed by mayflies (Ephemeroptera: Hexagenitidae) from mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber.

Hexagenitidae is an extinct family of Ephemeroptera with a fossil record spanning from the Early Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous. However, in mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber, one of the most diverse insect-bearing biotas known to date, only a single species, Hexameropsis elongatus Lin et al., has been described, and it is known solely from male adults. In this study, we describe three well-preserved species of Hexagenitidae from Kachin amber, including one new genus and species based on a female imago, Crehkahtihtengia dongi gen. et sp. nov., a new species, Hexameropsis fehrmannorum sp. nov., and

The Exact Morphology of the Species Ephemera pieli Navás, 1934 from Eastern China (Ephemeroptera: Ephemeridae).

The original description and outline figure of the mayfly Ephemera pieli Navás, 1934, were based on male subimagoes, and its morphology and taxonomic status have not been confirmed since then. However, recently collected materials from eastern China, including all stages of this mayfly, reveal several unique characteristics that indicate E. pieli is a valid species in the subgenus Ephemera (Ephemera). These characteristics include forewings with numerous dark dots, hindwings or hind wingpads with one or two distinct median dots, penes covered mostly by the subgenital plate, and the apex of the

A new mayfly subfamily sheds light on the early evolution and Pangean origin of Baetiscidae (Insecta: Ephemeroptera).

The family Baetiscidae Edmunds & Traver, 1954 is recognisable among mayflies due to its bizarre larvae, equipped with a robust and spiked thoracic notal shield covering part of the abdomen up to sixth segment. Originally being described as extant species from the USA and Canada, Baetiscidae were later found in the fossil record as well, specifically in Cretaceous of Brazil and Eocene Baltic amber. An enigmatic piece of fossil evidence are two larvae from the Early Cretaceous Koonwarra Fossil Bed in Australia, which have been presumed as attributable to Baetiscidae and briefly discussed in prev

Redescription of Apobaetis lakota McCafferty, 2000 (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) and description of two new species from Brazil.

The genus Apobaetis Day is known by its small size and larval shifting-sand habitat preference (psammophilous). Three species of this genus are recorded in North America, from these, only Apobaetis lakota McCafferty needs to be redescribed because its original description is incomplete, turning difficult to distinguish it from species with similar morphology. Therefore, one of the objectives of this study is to redescribe A. lakota. Based on this redescription, two new species from Brazil, with similar morphology could be identified and are described (Apobaetis biancae sp. nov. and Apobaetis j
