Chondroma of the laryngeal cartilage is an uncommon benign cartilaginous neoplasm. The commonest location is the posterior lamina of the cricoid cartilage, followed by the thyroid cartilage. The occurrence of chondroma in the epiglottis is extremely rare. Depending on the size and location of epiglottic chondroma the clinical manifestations are variable and include a lump in the neck, difficulty in swallowing fluids and dyspnea. In this study, an additional rare case of chondroma arising in the epiglottis is reported. The mass was located over the tip of the epiglottis and caused no significan

The visceral form of leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum is frequently observed in Mediterranean countries, however otorhinolaryngeal involvement has only rarely been reported in the literature. We report here the case of a 23-year-old Cameroon man, resident in France since 1991, and presenting with recurrent epistaxis and an epiglottis tumoral lesion. The visceral form of leishmaniasis with hepatosplenomegaly and pancytopenia was diagnosed. Culture of the epiglottal lesion revealed L. infantum. Serological test for human immunodeficiency virus was negative and the patient was not on i

In stumptail monkeys from birth to adulthood, and in very young human infants, the epiglottis serves to guide the larynx upwardly behind the soft palate so it can lock into the nasopharynx and remain there during respiration. After early infancy in man the attainment of a larynx-nasopharynx connection is uniquely lost, causing the epiglottis to have no essential function.

This report presents the case of a 2-year-old boy who had a bifid epiglottis associated with Joubert's syndrome. He had episodic tachypnea and apnea, inspiratory stridor, aspiration, and growth and mental retardation. Direct laryngoscopy demonstrated agenesis of the right half of the epiglottis and hypertrophied mucosa over the arytenoid cartilage. After the hypertrophied mucosa was partially vaporized with a CO2 laser, the inspiratory stridor soon improved and the aspiration was alleviated. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed cerebellar vermian agenesis and enlargement of the fourth ventr

While evaluating a 61-year-old patient for stridor we incidentally detected a double epiglottis. The patient was also diagnosed of having Weyer's acrofacial dysostosis which is characterized by hexadactyly affecting all four extremities, small and deeply set nails, dental deformities with small, conical teeth and mandibular hypoplasia. The double epiglottis was not the cause for the stridor. Because of the covert symptomatology of double epiglottis it is suggested that the association with Weyer's syndrome is common. Embryological evidence and a review of the literature on laryngeal abnormalit

Epiglottic cysts are benign laryngeal lesions. Though congenital cysts are often life-threatening, they are usually painless and symptomless in adults, or present with slight, though perceptible, interference with either swallowing or speaking or respiration. Early recognition and diagnosis by routine mirror laryngoscopy is advocated. Prompt removal or draining is the treatment. This is a case report of 42-year-old woman with complaints of feeling of something in throat, sleep apnoea and hoarseness, who on routine mirror laryngoscopy was found to have two large cysts arising from the free bord

Laryngeal chondrosarcomas are a very rare malignancy with less than 150 cases reported in the literature. Of these, the epiglottis is the most unusual primary neoplastic subsite. Uncertainties arise owing to the extremely rare nature of the condition with regard to treatment and investigation for metastases in overtly low grade cases. We present the case of a 62-year-old woman with a low grade chondrosarcoma, arising from the tip of the epiglottis, presenting with dysphagia but no other symptoms.

Hypoplasia of the epiglottis diagnosed at adulthood is extremely rare. Most patients with epiglottic hypoplasia have presented life-threatening symptoms of respiratory distress and severe aspiration in infancy or early childhood. This is a case of congenital epiglottic hypoplasia found in a 42-year-old man complaining of mild hoarseness and throat discomfort. Strobolaryngoscopy and CT scans revealed a unique anomaly with isolated epiglottic hypoplasia and normal appearance of other laryngeal structures. This case is discussed with a review of the literature on this rare occurrence.

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is caused by obstruction or narrowing of the airway at various levels. The repair of one site only will not alleviate the syndrome if there are obstructions in other sites. Epiglottis prolapse during inspiration is an unusual cause of airway obstruction and a rare cause of OSA. Twelve cases of OSAS due to an abnormal epiglottis are presented. We present our approach to the diagnosis using fibre-optic examination of the hypopharynx, and our treatment using endoscopic carbon dioxide laser partial epiglottidectomy. We found in our series that in 11.5 per c

Aplasia or hypoplasia of the epiglottis in an adult is rarely reported congenital anomaly of the larynx. Most patients with epiglottic aplasia have presented fatal symptom of respiratory distress and severe aspiration in infancy or childhood. We present a case of congenital absence of the epiglottis found in a 33-year-old woman complaining of recurrent lingual tonsillitis. Laryngoscopic finding and CT scan revealed an isolated epiglottic aplasia and normal appearance of other laryngeal structure. This is the first description of physiologic evaluation in an epiglottic anomaly to find the compe

Tumors involving the oral cavity of the horse are uncommon. No cases of equine adenocarcinoma on the dorsum of the tongue have been reported in the literature. We report a case of adenocarcinoma located on the dorsum of the posterior one-third of the tongue in a 29-year-old gelding with severe dysphagia. Endoscopy revealed an epiglottis involvement, and histology was consistent with adenocarcinoma arising from minor salivary glands, which was associated with a severe fungal colonization of affected tissues. The goals of this report are to present an uncommon case of dorsum of the tongue-associ

OBJECTIVE: To report the clinical signs and management of 4 foals with persistent frenulum of the epiglottis.
STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
ANIMALS: Four newborn foals.
METHODS: Foals were admitted with a complaint of oronasal reflux after nursing. Variable systemic signs of aspiration pneumonia were evident. Nasal endoscopy confirmed persistent dorsal displacement of the soft palate. Persistent frenulum of the epiglottis, confirmed by oral endoscopic examination, was transected.
RESULTS: After surgery, all foals had the epiglottis positioned normally, dorsal to the soft palate. Clinical sign

OBJECTIVE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder characterized by repeated upper airway collapse during sleep. The epiglottis, often overlooked in conventional assessments, has emerged as a site of significant obstruction in OSA. This review aims to highlight current knowledge of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of epiglottic collapse in adults with OSA.
DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane literature search.
METHODS: We conducted a detailed review of publications related to epiglottic collapse, specifically on study design,

OBJECTIVE: The characteristic swelling of acute epiglottitis is thought to be caused by histological factors in the epiglottis. We investigated the relationships between histological findings and the pathology of acute epiglottitis.
METHODS: We examined 23 autopsy cases. For 16 of these, histological assessments were performed. In the remaining 7 subjects, physiological saline was injected at the lingual tonsil.
RESULTS: These histological findings revealed abundant laryngeal glands on the laryngeal surface compared with the lingual surface. With regard to the blood vessels and lymphatic ves
