Upcycling of end-of-life wind turbine blades: Phosphoric acid-activated balsa carbon as a catalyst for the co-pyrolysis of epoxy resin and polyvinyl chloride core into phenolic compounds.

To enhance the resource utilization of end-of-life wind turbine blades (EolWTBs), this study proposes an innovative catalytic co-pyrolysis approach integrating catalyst preparation and synergistic recycling of different blade components. Specifically, this study first utilized H3PO4 as an activator to convert balsa wood from the balsa wood-filled part (EolWTB-1) into an H3PO4-AC catalyst, which was subsequently utilized to catalyze the co-pyrolysis of the glass fiber-reinforced polymer (EolWTB-3) and PVC-filled (EolWTB-4) parts. This strategy realized both waste-derived catalyst production and

Occupational skin hazards from synthetic plastics.

Epoxy and acrylic resins have numerous industrial applications but are also widely used in the household environment. These compounds are presently one of the most important sources of occupational contact dermatitis. Contact sensitization to epoxy resins is usually caused by the resin itself but hardeners or other additives, such as reactive diluents, plasticizers, fillers and pigments, can occasionally be responsible. Since completely cured epoxy resins are not sensitizers, epoxy resin sensitization is always due to the presence, in the final polymer, of uncured allergenic low molecular weig

Phosphorus-Containing Flame Retardants from Biobased Chemicals and Their Application in Polyesters and Epoxy Resins.

Phosphorus-containing flame retardants synthesized from renewable resources have had a lot of impact in recent years. This article outlines the synthesis, characterization and evaluation of these compounds in polyesters and epoxy resins. The different approaches used in producing biobased flame retardant polyesters and epoxy resins are reported. While for the polyesters biomass derived compounds usually are phosphorylated and melt blended with the polymer, biobased flame retardants for epoxy resins are directly incorporated into the polymer structure by a using a phosphorylated biobased monome

Catabolism and Accumulation of Dietary cis- and trans-Epoxy Octadecanoic Acids in Mice.

In vivo metabolism of epoxy fatty acids, the unsaturated fatty acid oxidation products formed upon heating of edible oils, remains unclear. Here, we compared the catabolic rates and accumulation of dietary cis- and trans-epoxy octadecanoic acids (epoxy-C18:0) with those of oleic acid (cis-C18:1) in mice using stable isotope-labeled compounds. Both epoxy isomers were catabolized more rapidly than cis-C18:1, with trans-epoxy-C18:0 exhibiting a slightly faster rate than cis-epoxy-C18:0. The concentrations of cis- and trans-epoxy-C18:0 were significantly lower than those of cis-C18:1 in the plasma

Effect of bio-based derived epoxy resin on interfacial adhesion of cellulose film and applicability towards natural jute fiber-reinforced composites.

This paper reports a bio-based vanillin-derived epoxy (VDE) resin for bio-based natural fiber-reinforced composites. VDE monomer was synthesized, and curing agents, namely, 4,4´-diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM) and isophorone diamine, were used. The prepared VDE resins with various curing parameters were characterized using FTIR, NMR, tensile test, bending test and water contact angle. Further, the interfacial adhesion feasibility of VDE resins on cellulose film was studied through the single-lap shear joint examination and compared with a commercial epoxy, DGEBA. The VDE-DDM resin exhibited exce

Modified Epoxy Resin Synthesis from Phosphorus-Containing Polyol and Physical Changes Studies in the Synthesized Products.

Epoxy resins are commonly used to manufacture the molding compounds, reinforced plastics, coatings, or adhesives required in various industries. However, the demand for new epoxy resins has increased to satisfy diverse industrial requirements such as enhanced mechanical properties, thermal stability, or electrical properties. Therefore, in this study, we synthesized new epoxy resin (PPME) by modifying phosphorous-containing polyol. The prepared resin was analyzed and added to epoxy compositions in various quantities. The compositions were cured at high temperatures to obtain plastics to furthe

Occupational asthma caused by an epoxy amine hardener.

We describe a 43-year-old epoxy floor layer who developed work-related asthma while exposed to an epoxy hardener based on isophorone diamine (IPDA). Challenge exposures to the curing of the epoxy resin system and subsequently to the polyfunctional amine hardener containing IPDA both elicited delayed asthmatic reactions. This report further indicates that exposure to epoxy hardeners containing polyfunctional amines should be considered as a potential cause of occupational asthma. Appropriate work hygiene measures should be implemented to minimize airborne exposure to these volatile compounds.

Epoxy resins.

Epoxy resins have an extraordinarily broad range of commercial applications, especially as protective surface coatings and adhesives. Epoxy resin systems include combinations of epoxy monomers, hardeners, reactive diluents, and/or a vast array of other additives. As a result, an epoxy resin system may have a number of chemical ingredients with the potential for attendant health hazards. Most, but not all, of these health hazards arise in the occupational setting. The most frequent adverse effects are irritation or allergic mechanisms involving the dermal and respiratory systems. Assessment of cross-reactivity of new less sensitizing epoxy resin monomers in epoxy resin-allergic individuals.

BACKGROUND: Measures to prevent occupational exposure to epoxy resins, including education, medical examination, and voluntary agreements between employers and workers, have not been effective enough to protect against skin sensitization. Therefore, alternatives to the major epoxy resin haptens that have been found to be less sensitizing in the local lymph node assay have been developed. OBJECTIVES: To study the cross-reactivity of two newly designed epoxy resin monomers, with decreased skin-sensitizing potency and good technical properties as compared with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DG

The stabilisation of single-based propellants (SBP) with equal quantities of bisphenol A-based epoxy resin (ER), bromine-containing epoxy resin (BER), chlorinated polyvinylchloride (PCV) and chlorinated rubber (CR) were investigated by viscosimetry and calorimetry. All compounds were thermodynamically compatible with SBP. The degree of stabilisation of SBP was measured after accelerated ageing and was evaluated by the loss of weight and by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). All compounds produced a significant decrease in the loss of weight, typically by more than a factor of 15
