Effect of eHMI-equipped automated vehicles on pedestrian crossing behavior and safety: A focus on blind spot scenarios.

Blind spot collisions are a critical and often overlooked threat to pedestrian safety, frequently resulting in severe injuries. This study investigates the impact of automated vehicles equipped with external human-machine interfaces (eHMIs) on pedestrian crossing behavior and safety, focusing on scenarios where AVs create mutual blind spots between pedestrians and adjacent traffic. A virtual reality experiment with 51 participants simulated crossing situations in front of yielding trucks with obstructed pedestrian visibility, featuring three eHMIs: 'Walk,' 'Don't Walk,' and 'Caution! Blind Spo

Removal of unwanted hair: efficacy, tolerability, and safety of long-pulsed 755-nm alexandrite laser equipped with a sapphire handpiece.

Due to the difference in refraction coefficients between air and the corneal epithelium, irradiation of the skin with a light source can lead to reflection of the energy and its leakage to the skin causes epidermal injury. All of which decreases the efficacy of treatment. We evaluated cooling sapphire handpieces' efficacy in decreasing pain and epidermal injuries and enhancing the treatment outcome in laser hair removal. A total of 49 patients with Fitzpatrick skin types of II to IV were treated for laser hair removal on face, limbs, inguinal, and axillary areas with pulsed 755-nm alexandrite

Safety on demand: A case study for the design and manufacturing-on-demand of personal protective equipment for healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the difficulties of countries and healthcare systems in preparing for major emergency situations. In the first month of the pandemic there was a global shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), thereby causing a rise in infection cases and deaths among healthcare workers (HCWs) in some countries. Moreover, the PPE used in hospitals today is not designed for prolonged use, and causes problems such as headaches and vision difficulties. To address these problems, a case study of an active PPE system for HCWs that is based on 3D printing and the use of

Barriers and facilitators to implementing reusable personal protective equipment in hospitals, and their impacts on environment, care safety, costs, and supply chain resilience: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Climate degradation poses a significant global health challenge, with healthcare systems paradoxically contributing to this issue while adhering to the principle of 'do no harm'. Notably, the healthcare sector accounts for a considerable share of greenhouse gas emissions in many industrialised countries, primarily due to the supply chain, including pharmaceuticals, disposable medical devices and personal protective equipment (PPE). The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this issue, with millions of tons of CO2 emissions attributed to single-use PPE. In response to the pandemic, some h

Determinants of knowledge and attitudes toward personal protective equipment use among commercial motorcycle riders in a conflict-affected region of Cameroon: implications for road safety in Sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death globally, disproportionately affecting motorcyclists in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets and visibility materials substantially reduce injury severity, yet their consistent use remains suboptimal in many African settings. In conflict-affected areas, where displacement and informal transport systems are common, safety behaviors may be further compromised. This study examined the determinants of knowledge and attitudes toward PPE use among commercial motorcycle riders in th

Guide for quality control and safety in clinical linear accelerators.

The main objective of this document has been to establish a guide for the design of the quality control programme in linear accelerators with isocentric assembly, incorporating the approaches of statistical process control and risk analysis. Throughout the text, it is emphasized that the guide is not prescriptive, and adaptation to the specific needs of each centre is encouraged. A brief description of the recommended tests is presented. A set of fundamental parameters and complementary ones are suggested, taking into account the results obtained from a survey of SEFM members, as well as propo
