Isolation of a wide range of minerals from a thermally treated plant: Equisetum arvense, a Mare's tale.

Silica is the second most abundant biomineral being exceeded in nature only by biogenic CaCO3. Many land plants (such as rice, cereals, cucumber, etc.) deposit silica in significant amounts to reinforce their tissues and as a systematic response to pathogen attack. One of the most ancient species of living vascular plants, Equisetum arvense is also able to take up and accumulate silica in all parts of the plant. Numerous methods have been developed for elimination of the organic material and/or metal ions present in plant material to isolate biogenic silica. However, depending on the chemical

Aqueous extract from Equisetum arvense stimulates the secretion of Tamm-Horsfall protein in human urine after oral intake.

BACKGROUND: Within European traditional phytotherapy, extracts from different herbal plants are used for prevention and therapy of uncomplicated urinary tract infections and for flushing out of kidney grits. Besides increased urine flow by slight diuretic effects, also stimulation of Tamm-Horsfall protein (syn. THP, uromodulin) in the distal part of the kidney could explain reduced kidney gravel and anti-virulent activity against uropathogenic E. coli. PURPOSES: Evaluation of THP-inducing activity of extracts from Equisetum arvense, Levisticum officinalis, Ilex paraguariensis, Juniperus commu

Prenatal exposure of a girl with autism spectrum disorder to 'horsetail' (Equisetum arvense) herbal remedy and alcohol: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder in which the interactions of genetic, epigenetic and environmental influences are thought to play a causal role. In humans, throughout embryonic and fetal life, brain development is exquisitely susceptible to injury caused by exposure to toxic chemicals present in the environment. Although the use of herbal supplements during pregnancy is relatively common, little information is available on their association with fetal neurodevelopment. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first report in the literature to associate a new pla

Equisetum diffusum whole plant methanol extract attenuates rheumatoid arthritis by modulating the expression of key inflammatory biomarkers in rat models.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with subsequent damage to the bone joints with a global incidence rate of 0.5-1%. To combat with RA various commercially available anti-inflammatory drugs like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly practiced; however, their long-term exposure often results in eliciting gastrointestinal and renal toxicity. Given this, the scientific communities are searching for an alternative therapeutic option that seems less injurious and equally efficacious. Equisetum diffusum D. Don, from the Equisetaceae family, i

Nitrogen fixation and other biogeochemically important features of Atacama Desert giant horsetail plant microbiomes inferred from metagenomic contig analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Canyon stream beds in the hyperarid Atacama Desert surprisingly harbour magnificent groves of endemic giant horsetail wetland plants, Equisetum xylochaetum. Our previous metagenomic study of eukaryotes closely associated with this plant indicated that the microbiome included prokaryotes that might likewise influence host success and environment. We explored this possibility by using the metagenomic sequence to characterize prokaryote taxa and functional genes present in the microbiome of E. xylochaetum sampled from remote sites differing in the degree of anthropogenic dist
