Effect of arm ergometry training on wheelchair propulsion endurance of individuals with quadriplegia.

Arm cycle ergometry has been shown to be an effective mode of cardiopulmonary training for individuals with spinal cord injuries. Arm cycle ergometry training results in an increased maximal oxygen uptake, exercise-induced bradycardia, and increased physical work capacity. Whether improvements in cardiopulmonary function parallel improvements in functional endurance, however, is unknown. In addition, no readily available tool to evaluate improvements in functional endurance has been identified. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of arm cycle ergometry training on th

[Endurance bicycle ergometry at 0 degrees C: cardio-respiratory and metabolic course].

The purpose of the present study is to determine the physiological and metabolic variations during and after an exhaustive exercise in different thermal conditions (0 degree C and 20 degrees C). For the eleven experimental subjects, the maximal power output is the same at 0 degrees C and 20 degrees C: 330 +/- 30 W (Mean +/- s). The heart rate is lower (bradycardia) at rest, exhaustion, and recovery. However, these differences are only significant (p less than 0.05) at exhaustion. The oxygen consumption and pulmonary ventilation is higher at 0 degree C in comparison with the measurements at 20

Evaluation of pulmonary function and bicycle ergometry tests in patients with Behçet's disease.

Behçet's disease (BD) has well-defined pulmonary complications, but cardiopulmonary exercise testing and the strength of the respiratory muscles have not been studied in detail. We aimed to investigate the pulmonary functions tests, inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength and endurance, cardiopulmonary exercise test response, and the relationship of these parameters in patients with BD. Forty BD patients and 20 healthy control subjects were recruited for this study. Mean age was 32.95 +/- 7.66 years for the BD group and 33.85 +/- 6.63 years for the control group with no statistically signif

Physiological responses of speed skaters to treadmill low walking and cycle ergometry.

Speed skaters have previously relied on cycle ergometry for physiological testing. Current evidence suggests skate-specific testing might be more appropriate. Unlike cycling, skating and off-ice low walk training involves a 'crouched' posture, placing the quadriceps in static contraction. This may compromise blood flow to working muscles and influence VO2. We compared physiological variables between skate-specific treadmill low walking (LW) and cycle ergometry (BK). Skaters (N = 8) performed LW and BK to fatigue in randomized order. No difference existed for peak HR. Peak VO2 was lower for LW

Heart rate turbulence assessed through ergometry after myocardial infarction: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. The impact of ventricular arrhythmias with impaired cardiac vagal activity is one of the most recently studied prognostic factors. However, there are no studies evaluating the phenomenon of heart rate turbulence (HRT) during physical exertion. OBJECTIVE: To study the behavior of HRT during exercise testing, among individuals after myocardial infarction. DESIGN AND SETTING: Feasibility study conducted in a university hospital among individuals 4-6 weeks after myocardial infarction. METHODS: All subjects und

[Standardized bicycle ergometry test in mitochondrial myopathies. Indications, interferences and clinical parameters].

Exercise tests are widely used as simple, non-invasive screening methods in the differential diagnosis of metabolic myopathies. Exercise protocols have not been standardized with regard to duration of the test, workload, or monitored metabolic parameters. Potentially interfering parameters such as gender or maximal isometric force of the individuals have not been investigated. Here we describe a standardized bicycle ergometry protocol with a stepwise increasing workload between 30 and 100 watts. The venous lactate/pyruvate (L/P) ratio proved to be the one clinically most useful parameter in th

Hemodynamic effects of cycle ergometry and low-intensity handgrip in patients with pulmonary hypertension.

INTRODUCTION: In pulmonary hypertension (PH), the hemodynamic response to exercise during right heart catheterization (RHC) can unmask latent left heart disease, is associated with prognosis, and can facilitate the understanding of patient's symptoms and the pathophysiology of heart failure. As cycle ergometry isn't widely available, we compared the hemodynamic effects of ergometry with isometric handgrip exercise. METHODS: This prospective study included 50 consecutive patients (mean age 68 ± 12 years, 54% female) with suspected or confirmed PH who underwent RHC. In a semi-recumbent position

A reference equation for peak oxygen uptake for cycle ergometry in Chinese adult participants.

Accurately quantifying cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) through cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is increasingly important for improving risk assessment and guiding clinical decisions. However, research on V̇O2peak reference values and predictive equations for the Chinese population remains limited. This study aimed to establish a V̇O2peak predictive equation for Chinese adults. This study analyzed healthy participants who underwent CPET at Peking University Third Hospital (PUTH) from September 1, 2017, to September 1, 2023. Data from September 1, 2017, and August 31, 2021 were used as t

Electroencephalography spectral coherence analysis during cycle ergometry in low- and high-tolerant individuals.

The main objective of this study was to further understanding of the patterns of spectral connectivity during exercise in low- and high-tolerant individuals. Thirty-nine healthy individuals (i.e., 17 low- and 22 high-tolerant participants) took part in the present study. A state-of-the-art portable electroencephalography system was used to measure the brain's electrical activity during an incremental exercise test performed until the point of volitional exhaustion on a cycle ergometer. Spectral coherence was used to explore the patterns of connectivity in the frontal, central, and parietal reg

Effects of rider position on continuous wave Doppler responses to maximal cycle ergometry.

Using 10 well-trained (VO2peak = 60.6 ml kg-1min-1) college age cyclists and continuous wave Doppler echocardiography, peak acceleration (PkA) and velocity (PkV) of blood flow in the ascending aorta, and the stroke velocity integral (SVI) were assessed to determine if rider position influenced the central haemodynamic responses to graded maximal cycle ergometry. Cyclist position was determined by hand placement on the uprights (UPRI) or drops (DROP) of conventional handlebars or using aerodynamic handlebars (AHB). All subjects consistently achieved a peak workload of 300 W. The Doppler variabl

Doppler echocardiographic assessment of the pressure gradient during bicycle ergometry in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

To assess the behavior of the subvalvular pressure gradient under physical exercise, 13 patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy were examined during upright bicycle ergometry by means of Doppler echocardiography. Additionally, right-sided cardiac catheterization was performed within 7 days. In 10 patients adequate Doppler tracings could be obtained during exercise. The Doppler-derived systolic pressure gradient increased from 75 +/- 24 to 140 +/- 42 mm Hg (p less than 0.0005). This was associated with an increase in the duration of the systolic mitral-septal contact from 59 +/- 2

Linear increase in optimal pedal rate with increased power output in cycle ergometry.

This experiment was designed to estimate the optimum pedal rates at various power outputs on the cycle ergometer. Five trained bicycle racers performed five progressive maximal tests on the ergometer. Each rode at pedal rates of 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 rev X min-1. Oxygen uptake and heart rate were determined from each test and plotted against pedal rate for power outputs of 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 W. Both VO2 and heart rate differed significantly among pedal rates at equivalent power outputs, the variation following a parabolic curve. The low point in the curve was taken as the optimal p

Evaluation of physical performance by rectangular-triangular bicycle ergometry and computer-assisted ergospirometry.

A great deal of information about physical adjustment to work can be obtained from quantitative stress testing. Maximal stress limited by symptoms of exertional intolerance is the concept of the 2 min duration work increment test (rectangular-triangular exercise test). Compared to steady-state work tests strict observation of the standardized procedure- and computer assisted evaluation of ergospirometric parameters offer innovatory opportunities: (1) the test is of short duration (8-14 min), (2) the subjects recover rapidly, even from an exhausting test, (3) one is more likely to be able to ob

A frame of reference for assessing the intensity of exertional dyspnoea during incremental cycle ergometry.

Assessment of dyspnoea severity during incremental cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) has long been hampered by the lack of reference ranges as a function of work rate (WR) and ventilation (V' E). This is particularly relevant to cycling, a testing modality which overtaxes the leg muscles leading to a heightened sensation of leg discomfort.Reference ranges based on dyspnoea percentiles (0-10 Borg scale) at standardised work rates and V' E were established in 275 apparently healthy subjects aged 20-85 years (131 men). They were compared with values recorded in a randomly selected "validati
