Recently, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among endoscopists have attracted considerable attention. MSDs are caused by prolonged static postures, forceful manual exertions, and repetitive twisting maneuvers. Basic knowledge of ergonomics is useful for improving the posture, movements, and work environment of endoscopists, as well as developing equipment to prevent MSDs. This review discusses problematic endoscopic tasks from an ergonomic perspective, issues with MSD definitions, the prevalence of MSDs, local site interpretations, risk factors including working time and environment, and ergono

Ergonomics remain an underestimated challenge in medicine, particularly in robotic surgery. Despite technical advances, surgeons often suffer from musculoskeletal disorders often involving the neck, back, and wrist. Previous studies have shown that a lack of knowledge and awareness of ergonomic recommendations for the use of the console, unnatural or poor physiological postures, and a lack of training are common causes of poor posture and associated complaints. A physiological posture is the basis for a healthy workspace, both when standing and sitting. Of particular relevance are a neutral he

Ergonomics is the science that studies how to adapt the relationship between the human being with its environment. Performing musculoskeletal ultrasound applying appropriate ergonomic techniques both in the patient and by the sonographer, can reduce bodily injuries that are usually generated in repetitive work like this, causing a detriment to the quality of life. The objective of this pictorial is to depict some of the ergonomic characteristics necessary in this work environment by reviewing the literature related to the objective of this work. We conclude that carrying out ergonomic measures

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Understanding effective ergonomic interventions is crucial for enhancing occupational health and career longevity. There is a paucity of clear ergonomics guidelines in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery (FPRS), placing practitioners at high risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) and their consequences.
RECENT FINDINGS: There is mounting evidence that FPRS specialists are at increased risk of WMSDs as compared with the public and other surgical specialties. Numerous studies have demonstrated that implementation of ergonomics principles in surgery decre

The application of electromyography in analysis of muscle strain in working situations is far from straight-forward. Muscle force, for instance, is not directly accessible using electromyography. New insight in electrophysiological phenomena of human muscle provides however a firm basis for analysis of localized muscle fatigue at work. Such applications entail information at the muscle fiber membrane level.

PURPOSE: Assistive technology (AT) is essential for promoting independence, autonomy, and quality of life. However, its effectiveness depends on how well devices are designed to support users' activities, contexts, and usage patterns. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesise how ergonomic and usability principles are addressed in the design of assistive technologies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and reported in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Database searches identified 1,540 records, of which

BACKGROUND: Proper ergonomics is crucial for surgeons in the operating room to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries (MSI). Surgery performed on patients with high body mass indexes (BMI) is associated with an increase in non-neutral postures and a higher risk of developing MSIs in laparoscopic models (Sers et al., in Appl Ergon 97:103501). The aim of this study is to establish the prevalence and identify the risk factors of MSIs among bariatric surgeons in Canada.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study is based on a researcher-administered questionnaire conducted using a videoconference p

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal discomfort is widely experienced by surgeons across multiple surgical specialties. Developing technologies and new minimally invasive techniques add further complexity and ergonomic stressors. These stressors differentially affect male and female surgeons, but little is known about the role these sex disparities play in surgical ergonomic stress. We reviewed existing literature to better understand how ergonomic stress varies between male and female surgeons.
STUDY DESIGN: A literature search was performed via PubMed including but not limited to the following topic

Cardiothoracic surgery, demanding in nature, often results in surgeons suffering from musculoskeletal injuries, causing chronic pain and leading to premature retirement. A significant majority report experiencing pain, exacerbated by minimally invasive techniques such as video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Despite this, many surgeons delay seeking medical assistance. To mitigate these risks, preventative strategies such as strength exercises, stretching during operations, and taking brief breaks are crucial. However, the surgical community faces a shortage of institutional support and compre

Musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries are the most common and debilitating work-related injuries among healthcare providers. These injuries often occur due to a lack of awareness and insufficient guidance during the early years of medical training. Recognizing the need to address this issue, the Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshop (CCCW) has taken steps to integrate an ergonomics session into its curriculum. The goal of this initiative is to enhance awareness on ergonomics, improve the integration of ergonomics into daily routine, and ultimately reduce the occurrence of MSK injuries among healthcare pr

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders are common among surgeons, and affect most neurosurgeons over the course of their career. Although all subspecialist neurosurgeons may be affected by physical strain, spine surgeons and skull base surgeons have a high propensity for workplace injury as a result of long procedures with repetitive movements in strained physical positions.
METHODS: In this review, the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in neurosurgery, the state of innovation to improve ergonomics in the operating room for neurosurgeons, and potential limitations in advancing technology
