Transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease to the patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas) with cytopathological changes in in vitro cultivated brain cells.

The transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) to the patas monkey, Erythrocebus patas, has been accomplished. Clinical neurological disease was first noticed 47 months and 23 days after intracerebral inoculation of infected squirrel monkey brain. The disease progressed slowly and lasted 8 months. Microscopic examination of the brain and spinal cord revealed lesions of status spongiosus and astrogliosis in the cortical gray matter consistent with a diagnosis of experimental CJD. A vacuolating 'spongiform' cytopathological effect was seen in many of the in vitro cultivated brain cells in t

Chromosome abnormalities in peripheral blood lymphocytes from Macaca fascicularis and Erythrocebus patas (Cercopithecidae, Catarrhini) after X-ray irradiation.

In this paper, we describe the results of a qualitative and quantitative study of chromosomal reorganizations in X-irradiated (1 Gy and 2 Gy) lymphocytes from Macaca fascicularis (MFA) and Erythrocebus patas (EPA). A total of 515 breakpoints in M. fascicularis and 271 breakpoints in E. patas have been detected, identified and localized in the ideogram of the species. The Chi square test indicates that the distribution of breakpoints along the chromosomes is not random in M. fascicularis, and is not random for the p and q arms and bands in both species. Chromosome 5 of M. fascicularis (MFA5), c

Fetal mitochondrial heart and skeletal muscle damage in Erythrocebus patas monkeys exposed in utero to 3'-azido-3'-deoxythymidine.

3'-azido-3'-deoxythymidine (AZT) is given to pregnant women positive for the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) to reduce maternal-fetal viral transmission. To explore fetal mitochondrial consequences of this exposure, pregnant Erythrocebus patas monkeys were given daily doses of 1.5 mg (21% of the human daily dose) and 6.0 mg (86% of the human daily dose) of AZT/kg body weight (bw), for the second half of gestation. At term, electron microscopy of fetal cardiac and skeletal muscle showed abnormal and disrupted sarcomeres with myofibrillar loss. Some abnormally shaped mitochondria wit

Loa loa: experimental infection in two species of African primates.

Four species of primates, baboon (Papio anubis), patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas), green monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) and chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) were inoculated with third-stage larvae of a human strain of Loa loa from Cameroon, West African. The baboon and patas monkeys developed patent infections after 135 to 148 days; the green monkeys and chimpanzee did not. In each animal which became patent, microfilaremia rose rapidly to high levels. In the baboon, but not in the patas monkeys, there was a suppression of microfilaremia during the 4th month of patency. After splenectomy, micro

Serological Evidence of Infection with Endemic Human Pathogens Among Free-Ranging Old World Monkeys in Puerto Rico.

Serum specimens from free-ranging but nonnative patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) and rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in southwestern Puerto Rico (PR) were tested for antibodies to infection with dengue viruses (DENVs), West Nile virus (WNV), Leptospira species, and Burkholderia pseudomallei by microneutralization, plaque reduction neutralization, microscopic agglutination, and indirect hemagglutination, respectively. Of 23 animals (21 E. patas and two M. mulatta) tested, all had evidence of prior DENV infection, and of 17 animals tested for WNV, nine (53%) had evidence of prior infection. O

Uptake and development of Wuchereria bancrofti in Aedes aegypti and Haitian Culex quinquefasciatus that were fed on a monkey with low-density microfilaremia.

Colonized mosquitoes of Culex quinquefasciatus (Haitian strain) and Aedes aegypti (Liverpool strain) were blood fed on a patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas) that had been experimentally infected with the Haitian strain of Wuchereria bancrofti and harbored a consistently low microfilaremia (1-3 mf per 20 mm3). Both species ingested more than twice the expected number of microfilariae (mf), i.e. 1.9 and 0.77 mf per mosquito, respectively. However, at 10-16 hours post ingestion only 4.2% of the mf had migrated from the blood meal in Cx. quinquefasciatus versus 20.7% in Ae. aegypti. Subsequently, on

The species-specific nature of the ototoxicity of dihydrostreptomycin in the patas monkey.

The remarkable susceptibility of the inner ear of the patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas) to the ototoxic action of dihydrostreptomycin (DHSM) (and streptomycin (SM)) is well established in this paper and affords a rare example of a species-specific reaction to a restricted class of compounds within the aminoglycoside group of antibiotics. In a series of experiments, behavioral and morphological observations together provided the following profile of DHSM ototoxicity in the patas monkey: Sudden onset of hearing loss beginning after 7-9 weeks of treatment; Substantial, though often partial, heari

The evoked cochlear mechanical response in laboratory primates. A preliminary report.

The evoked cochlear mechanical response has been recorded in two species of laboratory primates, Macaca irus and Erythrocebus patas. The responses are very similar to those obtained in humans although the response to each click is of shorter duration. The response is vulnerable to the ototoxicity of furosemide and etacrynic acid and to noise exposure. At and near threshold an active generator of mechanical energy within the cochlea is proposed. The significance of such a generator and a possible source are discussed.

Simian Varicella Virus: Molecular Virology and Mechanisms of Pathogenesis.

Simian varicella virus (SVV) was first isolated in 1966 from African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) imported from Nairobi, Kenya, to the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom (UK) (Clarkson et al., Arch Gesamte Virusforsch 22:219-234, 1967). SVV infection caused severe disease that resulted in a 56% case fatality rate (CFR) in the imported animals within 48 h of the appearance of a varicella-like rash (Clarkson et al., Arch Gesamte Virusforsch 22:219-234, 1967; Hemme et al., Am J Trop Med Hyg 94:1095-1099, 2016). Tamoxifen-DNA adduct formation in monkey and human reproductive organs.

The estrogen analog tamoxifen (TAM), used for adjuvant therapy of breast cancer, induces endometrial and uterine tumors in breast cancer patients. Proliferation stimulus of the uterine endometrium is likely involved in tumor induction, but genotoxicity may also play a role. Formation of TAM-DNA adducts in human tissues has been reported but remains controversial. To address this issue, we examined TAM-DNA adducts in uteri from two species of monkeys, Erythrocebus patas (patas) and Macaca fascicularis (macaque), and in human endometrium and myometrium. Monkeys were given 3-4 months of chronic T

Mansonella ozzardi: a redescription with comments on its taxonomic relationships.

Mansonella ozzardi is redescribed from adult worms collected from the subcutaneous tissues of patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) infected with a Haitian strain of the filaria. The worms are small and very slender; females measure about 49 mm in length by 0.15 mm in diameter and males, 26 by 0.07 mm. Haitian (Caribbean) and Colombian (Amazon) forms of the filaria are morphologically identical, as are their microfilariae. Mansonella is most closely related to Tetrapetalonema. Based on taxonomic priority the latter becomes a synonym of Mansonella. As a consequence, T. perstans and T. streptocerca

Mansonella ozzardi: the course of patency in experimentally-infected patas monkeys.

Twenty-five of 30 patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) inoculated with varying numbers (35 to 135) of third-stage larvae of Mansonella ozzardi developed patent infections in an average of 163 days. There was no correlation between the size of the inoculum and the length of the prepatent period. Ten of the monkeys were monitored thereafter by regular blood examination for extended periods of time in order to characterize the onset, course and duration of patency. Typically, with the onset of patency, microfilaremias increased steadily, peaking at about 20 weeks and then decreased slowly stabilizi

Experimental Onchocerca volvulus infections in mangabey monkeys (Cercocebus atys) compared to infections in humans and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Three chimpanzees, three mangabey monkeys (Cercocebus atys), and 14 patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) were inoculated with L3 Onchocerca volvulus of Guatemalan origin. One chimpanzee and two mangabey monkeys developed antibody activity to at least three different antigens. Both mangabey monkeys recognized a 20 kDa antigen 3.5-5 months post-inoculation, and the monkeys and the chimpanzee developed antibody activity to 14 and 22 kDa antigens 7.5-13 months post-inoculation. Non-human primate antibody response to mosquito salivary proteins: Implications for dengue virus transmission in Puerto Rico.

An important step to incriminate a mosquito as a vector of a disease pathogen is finding evidence of direct contact between the mosquito and humans. Typically, this is accomplished through landing/biting catches, or host blood meal analysis in engorged mosquitoes via immunologic assays. An alternate approach is to identify the presence of specific mosquito anti-saliva protein antibodies in the blood of exposed hosts. Following the discovery of dengue infected, free roaming non-human primates in Puerto Rico, we investigated which mosquito species had bitten these primates using a serologic assa

Development of a nonhuman primate model for fetoscopy.

Twenty-four fetoscopy procedures were performed on 22 monkeys (19 Macaca mulatta, one M. fascicularis, two Erythrocebus patas) with gestational ages ranging from 66 to 145 days. Insertion of the fetoscope without ultrasound guidance was easy in 14 and difficult in ten procedures. Simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) from sun-tailed monkeys (Cercopithecus solatus): evidence for host-dependent evolution of SIV within the C. lhoesti superspecies.

Recently we reported the characterization of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVlhoest) from a central African l'hoest monkey (Cercopithecus lhoesti lhoesti) that revealed a distant relationship to SIV isolated from a mandrill (SIVmnd). The present report describes a novel SIV (SIVsun) isolated from a healthy, wild-caught sun-tailed monkey (Cercopithecus lhoesti solatus), another member of the l'hoest superspecies. Effect of cerebrospinal fluid hyperosmolality on sweating in the heat-stressed patas monkey.

Dehydration increases the osmolality of body fluids and decreases the rate of sweating during thermal stress. By localizing osmotic stimuli to central nervous system tissues, this study assessed the role of central stimulation on sweating in a heat-stressed nonhuman primate. Lenperone-tranquilized patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas n = 5), exposed to 41 +/- 2 degrees C, were monitored for calf sweat rate, rectal and mean skin temperatures, oxygen consumption, and heart rate during infusions (255-413 microliters) of hypertonic artificial cerebrospinal fluid (ACSF) into the third cerebral ventric
