Primate erythroparvovirus 1 (parvovirus B19) is a member of the Erythrovirus genus of the Parvoviridae family and it is one of the few members of the family known to be pathogenic in human. B19 infection is common and widespread with the virus being associated with numerous rheumatologic and haematologic manifestations. More specifically, maternal infection with parvovirus B19 during pregnancy can cause severe anemia which may lead to nonimmune hydrops or fetal demise, as a result of fetal erythroid progenitor cells infection with shortened half-life of erythrocytes. We present a rare case rep

Congenital infection is those transmitted by the mother to the fetus before delivery. It can occur transplacentally or by direct contact with the pathogen during birth or in the immediate postnatal period. Congenital infection can be due to viruses (rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex, varicella-zoster, hepatitis B and C virus, human inunodeficiencia, erythrovirus B19) as bacteria (Treponema pallidum) and parasites (Toxoplasma gondii and Trypanosoma cruzi). Serological diagnosis of congenital infection is based on both the knowledge of infectious serology in the mother, including the syst

Parvovirus B19, a member of the Erythrovirus genus, is the only member of the Parvoviridae family known to be pathogenic in humans. Erythroviruses are so named because of their tropism and selective replication in erythroid progenitor cells. Haematological consequences of B19 infection arise due to a direct cytotoxic effect on erythroid progenitors in bone marrow with interruption of erythrocyte production. In addition, the physiology of host haematopoiesis and competence of the immune response each determines clinical manifestations of B19 infection: in individuals with underlying haemolytic

The human parvovirus B19 (PVB19), an erythrovirus causing diverse clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic or mild to more severe outcomes such as hydrops fetalis, is the only known human pathogenic parvovirus so far. Although enteroviruses have long been considered the most common cause of inflammatory cardiomyopathy, PVB19 is emerging as a important candidate. Recent studies have indicated an association of PVB19 with paediatric and adult inflammatory cardiac disease. However, whether or not PVB19 has an impact on inflammatory cardiomyopathy in adult patients is still unclear. The f

Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a small (22-24 nm) nonenveloped DNA virus belonging to the genus Erythrovirus (family Parvoviridae). Although it generally causes self-limiting conditions in healthy people, B19V infection may have a different outcome in patients with inherited hemolytic anemias. In such high-risk individuals, the high-titer replication may result in bone marrow suppression, triggering a life-threatening drop of hemoglobin values (profound anemia, aplastic crisis). To date there is no consensus concerning a B19V screening program either for the blood donations used in the hemothe

Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a member of the genus Erythrovirus in the family Parvoviridae. In vitro, autonomous B19V replication is limited to human erythroid progenitor cells and in a small number of erythropoietin-dependent human megakaryoblastoid and erythroid leukemic cell lines. Here we report that the failure of B19V DNA replication in nonpermissive 293 cells can be overcome by adenovirus infection. More specifically, the replication of B19V DNA in the 293 cells and the production of infectious progeny virus were made possible by the presence of the adenovirus E2a, E4orf6, and VA RNA

Parvovirus B19 infection can present with myriads of clinical diseases and syndromes; liver manifestations and hepatitis are examples of them. Parvovirus B19 hepatitis associated aplastic anemia and its coinfection with other hepatotropic viruses are relatively underrecognized, and there is sufficient evidence in the literature suggesting that B19 infections can cause a spectrum of liver diseases from elevation of transaminases to acute hepatitis to fulminant liver failure and even chronic hepatitis. It can also cause fatal macrophage activation syndrome and fibrosing cholestatic hepatitis. Pa

BACKGROUND: Parvovirus B19 is a single-stranded DNA virus belonging to the family Parvoviridae, genus Erythrovirus. PVB19 infection is most common in the pediatric population, manifesting as erythema infectiosum. In patients with hemoglobinopathy, PVB19 infection is known to cause aplastic anemia. PVB19 infection rarely affects the nervous system - reported manifestations include seizures, encephalitis and meningoencephalitis. Less common presentations include stroke, cerebellar ataxia, optic neuritis, brachial plexitis, Guillain-Barré syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Parvovirus B19 is an erythrovirus causing diverse clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic or mild, to more severe outcomes in, for example, immune-compromised patients. B19 is spread primarily via the respiratory route, but it can also be transmitted via blood and blood products. Viral loads in blood or plasma donations amount up to 10(11) genome equivalents/ml. Therefore, screening of plasma for fractionation for the presence of B19 and removal of highly loaded donations is a way to limit considerably the input of B19 into production pools and to improve further the safety of plasma

During the last 20 years, the safety of blood products increased dramatically with regard to the infectious risk and notably to that represented by retroviruses (HIV and HTLV) and hepatitis B and C viruses. The aim of this review is to identify the residual and emergent viral threats that could be responsible for the occurring of new contaminations in the receivers of blood products. Beside many other viruses (HHV-8, erythrovirus B19, hepatitis A and E viruses...), a special attention has been paid to emerging arbovirus diseases (West Nile virus infection, dengue, chikungunya) that threaten to

The presence of viruses in the thyroid has been shown, but whether they are implicated in thyroid diseases or are only spectators is under investigation. The most important candidate viruses for autoimmune thyroid disorders (AITD) are hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human parvovirus B19 (or Erythrovirus B19 or EVB19). Retrospective and prospective case-control studies conducted on pathology slides showed (by PCR, in situ hybridization or immunohistochemistry) EVB19 was present in thyroid tissues of patients with autoimmune thyroiditis (AT), Graves' disease and thyroid cancer. Though AITD can be as

Parvovirus B19 causes a variety of diseases in humans, with outcomes ranging from asymptomatic to severe, such as chronic anemia in immunocompromised patients or fetal hydrops and death after maternal infection during pregnancy. The virus may be transmitted via plasma-derived products. According to the results of solvent-detergent safety studies, an upper limit of B19 DNA in plasma pools was recently defined. To restrict the input of B19 virus into production pools, a quantitative nucleic acid test is a prerequisite. We examined the suitability of the two commercial quantitative B19 PCR tests,

Intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIg) are therapeutic preparations of normal human IgG that have been used for more than 20 years for substitutive therapy in patients with primary antibody deficiencies. Recent studies pointed out the need to obtain normal residual levels of IgG (i.e. 8 g/L) in order to reduce the number and severity of bacterial infections in these patients. The IVIg are also prescribed for the substitutive therapy of secondary immunodeficiencies such as chronic lymphoid leukemia and multiple myeloma with hypogammaglobulinemia and severe and/or recurrent infections, and human imm

Erythrovirus B19 (B19V) infection may cause red cell aplasia in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has improved the immune function of these patients by modifying the course of B19V infection. The purpose of this study was to estimate the frequency of B19 seroconversion in a cohort of HIV-infected patients and evaluate the occurrence of B19V-related anaemia during the seroconversion period. Adult HIV-infected patients were studied at a public hospital in Niterói, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. IgG and Ig

Erythrovirus B19 infection is usually benign but may have serious consequences in patients with hemolytic anemia (transient aplastic crisis), immunodeficiency (in whom persistent infection can lead to chronic bone marrow failure with anemia), or who are in the first or second trimester of gestation (spontaneous abortion, hydrops fetalis, and fetal death). Being non-enveloped, B19 resists most inactivation methods and can be transmitted by transfusion. B19 is difficult to cultivate and native virus is usually obtained from viremic blood. As specific antibodies may be absent, and there is no rel

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although parvovirus B19 is a significant blood product contaminant, few methods other than polymerase chain reaction (PCR) have been developed to detect the presence of the virus.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A B19 antigen enzyme immunoassay (EIA) has been developed and the sensitivity of detection is ascertained using dilutions of the B19 capsid protein VP2 and 10-fold dilutions of B19 viraemic serum. Once the assay cut-off was established, a panel of viraemic donations (n = 70) was screened by the antigen EIA. The B19 immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG status of these specim

Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) from the erythrovirus genus is known to be a pathogenic virus in humans. Prevalence of B19V infection has been reported worldwide in all seasons, with a high incidence in the spring. B19V is responsible for erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) commonly seen in children. Its other clinical presentations include arthralgia, arthritis, transient aplastic crisis, chronic anemia, congenital anemia, and hydrops fetalis. In addition, B19V infection has been reported to trigger autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. However, the m

Several exanthems including Gianotti-Crosti syndrome, pityriasis rosea, asymmetrical periflexural exanthem, eruptive pseudoangiomatosis, and papular-purpuric gloves and socks syndrome are suspected to be caused by viruses. These viruses are potentially dangerous. Gianotti-Crosti syndrome is related to hepatitis B virus infection which is the commonest cause of hepatocellular carcinoma, and Epstein-Barr virus infection which is related to nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Pityriasis rosea has been suspected to be related to human herpesvirus 7 and 8 infections, with the significance of the former still
