Grim-19 expressed by recombinant adenovirus for esophageal neoplasm target therapy.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA) are the two most common types of esophageal cancer, which is the sixth highest cause of cancer‑associated mortality and the eighth most common cancer worldwide. Gene associated with retinoid‑interferon (IFN)‑induced mortality‑19 (Grim‑19) is reported to be a cell death activator that may be used to define mechanisms involved in IFN‑β‑ and retinoic acid‑induced cell death and apoptosis in a number of tumor cell lines. The present study constructed a recombinant adenovirus expressing Grim‑19 (rAd‑Grim‑19) and investigat

[Stomach and esophageal neoplasm. Changes over 16 years in clinical materials].

Increasing prevalence of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and esophago-gastric junction has been reported. The aim of the study was to determine whether this phenomenon is reflected in the cohort of patients referred for surgery to our institution. Clinical and pathological records of patients with adenocarcinoma of the stomach (n = 433) or gastro-esophageal junction (n = 302), and squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus (n = 266) were reviewed from 1981 to 1996. Yearly prevalence of carcinoma of the gastric cardia in comparison to carcinoma of (a more distal) stomach has not changed, ranging

Artificial intelligence-aided optical biopsy improves the diagnosis of esophageal squamous neoplasm.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of esophageal squamous neoplasms (ESN) is essential for improving patient prognosis. Optical diagnosis of ESN remains challenging. Probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (pCLE) enables accurate in vivo histological observation and optical biopsy of ESN. However, interpretation of pCLE images requires histopathological expertise and extensive training. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely applied in digestive endoscopy; however, AI for pCLE diagnosis of ESN has not been reported. AIM: To develop a pCLE computer-aided diagnostic system for ESN and assess i

Safety and efficacy of endoscopic submucosal dissection with gel immersion technique for superficial esophageal neoplasms.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Gel immersion (GI) endoscopy provides a good visual field in endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD); however, its clinical outcomes are poorly understood. This study aimed to compare the treatment outcomes between esophageal gel immersion endoscopic submucosal dissection (GI-ESD) and conventional ESD (C-ESD) to determine the safety and efficacy of GI-ESD. METHODS: The data of 71 consecutive patients who underwent esophageal ESD between April 2021 and March 2023 at a Japanese tertiary center were retrospectively reviewed. GI was achieved using an additional irrigation tube.

The Feasibility and Safety of Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection for Circumferential Superficial Esophageal Squamous Cell Neoplasms.

Background It remains controversial whether endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is still appropriate for circumferential superficial esophageal squamous cell neoplasms (SESCN), and few studies compared the short-term and long-term outcomes of ESD with radical surgery. Methods A total of 140 patients with SESCN who underwent ESD or surgery between February 2014 and October 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. The characteristics of patients, operative time, postoperative complications, overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival (RFS), and quality of life (QOL) were compared between the E

Case report: Quadruple primary malignant neoplasms including esophageal, ureteral, and lung in an elderly male.

Multiple primary malignant neoplasms (MPMNs) are defined as multiple tumors with different pathogenic origins. MPMNs are rare, but the morbidity rate is on the rise. With the development of anti-tumor treatments, such as targeted therapy and immunotherapy, the overall survival of cancer patients has been significantly prolonged, leading to an increased number of patients with MPMNs. A crucial aspect of MPMNs management is deciding how to schedule further treatments according to individual tumor risk. This process involves a multidisciplinary physician team to ensure favorable outcomes. Herein

Association between frailty status and complications in patients undergoing surgical excision of malignant esophageal neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Research within the last decade highlights the patients' frailty status as an important predictor of esophageal cancer outcomes, but the literature evaluating frailty's role in these patients remains limited. We evaluated the role of frailty in patients undergoing resection of malignant esophageal neoplasms. METHODS: We used the Nationwide Readmissions Database from 2016 and 2017 to identify patients who underwent excision of a malignant esophageal neoplasm. Patient frailty was queried using the Johns Hopkins Adjusted Clinical Groups frailty-defining diagnosis indicator. Propensit

Rigid Esophagoscopy for Head and Neck Cancer Staging and the Incidence of Synchronous Esophageal Malignant Neoplasms.

IMPORTANCE: Rigid esophagoscopy (RE) was once an essential part of the evaluation of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) due to the high likelihood of identifying a synchronous malignant neoplasm in the esophagus. Given recent advances in imaging and endoscopic techniques and changes in the incidence of esophageal cancer, the current role for RE in HNSCC staging is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the current role of RE in evaluating patients with HNSCC, and to determine the incidence of synchronous esophageal malignant neoplasms in patients with HNSCC. DESIGN, SETTING,

Superficial Esophageal Neoplasms Overlying Leiomyomas Removed by Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection: Case Reports and Review of the Literature.

The coexistence of an epithelial lesion and a subepithelial lesion is uncommon. In almost all such cases, the coexistence of these lesions appears to be incidental. It is also extremely rare to encounter a neoplasm in the surface epithelium that overlies a benign mesenchymal tumor in the esophagus. Several cases of a coexisting esophageal neoplasm overlying a leiomyoma that is treated endoscopically or surgically have been reported previously. Here, three cases of a superficial esophageal neoplasm that developed over an esophageal leiomyoma and was then successfully removed by endoscopic submu

Esophacoil expanding stent in the management of patients with nonresectable malignant esophageal or cardiac neoplasm: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: In this prospective study we evaluated the use of the self-expanding Esophacoil stent for palliation in patients with non-resectable malignant tumors of the cardia and esophagus. The stent has some obvious advantages from a theorectical point of view, namely a wide diameter and strong forces of expansion and retraction, which prevent migration and tumor overgrowth. Its considerable flexibility facilitates insertion of the stent into tortuous and angulated passages. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients participated in the study. The tumor was located in the l
