The role of policy in community pharmacies' response to injection-drug use: results of a nationwide Canadian survey.

The response rate to this survey reflects the salience of the topic and the professional concern about and interest in issues presented by HIV. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has presented pharmacists with one of the greatest challenges to their professional training, ethics, and practice. It further expedites a current re-examination that is occurring among community pharmacies concerning their roles in community health practices. In response to HIV there have been dramatic and unprecedented changes in pharmacy policy and practices. Clearly, some community pharmacies have led the way and influenced po

Impact of Medicare changes in pharmacy reimbursement on patient care: two case reports.

PURPOSE: Two case reports illustrate the impact of changes in pharmacy reimbursement associated with the Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization Act (MMA) on patient care. SUMMARY: The Medicare Part D benefit is complex and difficult for patients to understand. A patient's personal financial situation and quality of life issues may enter into decisions about enrolling in Part D and the use of drug therapy. Local coverage decisions by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services can limit access to drug therapy and raise ethical dilemmas. CONCLUSION: Changes in pharmacy rei

A mixed-methods cross-sectional study to evaluate the public acceptability of a novel pharmacy-based response service for domestic abuse and/or suicidal ideation.

BACKGROUND: Domestic abuse (DA) and suicidal ideation (SI) are prevalent and often co-occur. Numerous practical and psychosocial barriers inhibit help-seeking, including accessibility and confidentiality concerns. Early intervention and referral are essential for both DA and SI. Pharmacies are accessible and may be perceived as a discreet venue for a DA and SI response service. There is a growing body of literature about the role of community pharmacy teams in suicide prevention and assisting domestic abuse victims globally. Whilst there have been some interventions in UK pharmacies to support

Quality of Information on Medication Abortion in Private Pharmacies: Results from a Mystery Client Study in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Introduction: Pharmacies are important points of access and information for women seeking medication abortion. In the context of the Democratic Republic of Congo [DRC], where the legal conditions for abortion have expanded in recent years and now allow pharmacies to dispense medication abortion with a prescription, little is known about medication abortion counseling and care offered by pharmacy staff. The aim of this study was to explore the quality of information provided by pharmacy staff to customers seeking medication abortion in Kinshasa. Methodology: A cross-sectional study using the my

Protocol for a randomised controlled trial of 90% kanuka honey versus 5% aciclovir for the treatment of herpes simplex labialis in the community setting.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, about 90% of people are infected with the herpes simplex virus, 30% of whom will experience recurrent herpes simplex labialis, commonly referred to as 'cold sores', which can last up to 10 days. The most common treatment is aciclovir cream which reduces healing time by just half a day compared with no specific treatment. This is a protocol for a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to determine the efficacy of medical grade kanuka honey-based topical treatment (Honevo) in reducing the healing time and pain of cold sores, compared with topical aciclovir treatment (Viraban)

[Pharmacists as part of an outpatient palliative care team].

Pharmacists are an integral factor in palliative medical care, especially in the context of specialised outpatient palliative care (in Germany „SAPV“). As part of a multi professional team, pharmacists take care of patients especially in complex supply situations. The drug therapy is always checked for side-effects and interactions, and the medication is adjusted to application methods which are still possible (e. g. subcutaneous administration or administration via gastro-intestinal probes). A 24/7 supply of urgently needed medicines needs to be ensured and clinical nutrition must be suited t

From Displacement to Service: A Pharmacist's Reflections on Medication Education in Rural Northern Iraq.

Global displacement disrupts continuity of care and access to essential medicines, creating medication-related challenges in fragile health systems. In October 2024, I returned to Northern Iraq to provide medication education sessions across 7 rural villages serving internally displaced Assyrian communities and individuals with limited access to consistent pharmacy services. This commentary reflects on that experience and considers what it revealed about medication use in displacement-affected communities and the preparation of future pharmacists. The outreach demonstrated the importance of cu

Factors influencing pharmacy services in opioid substitution treatment.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Heroin dependence is a serious health burden in Australia. Opioid substitution treatment (OST) has been delivered in Australian community pharmacies since 1985. The effectiveness of pharmacy-based OST is evident and the demand is increasing; however, the participation rate of community pharmacies is low, with over 60% non-providers. While previous Australian studies have focused on perspectives of community pharmacists providing the service, the views of non-providers have not yet been explored. This study aimed to further investigate factors influencing pharmacists' part

Pharmacies mainly operate as retailers of industrially manufactured drugs.Pharmaceutical consultation of customers at pharmacies aimed at responsible self-medication is the most popular and accessible feature of pharmaceutical care. In Russia there is a significant list of medicines approved for sale in pharmacies on a non-prescription basis that is specified in the product label. In this regard, the role of pharmacists in public health in Russia increases. Pharmacist, wo
