Short Nose Correction: Septal Cartilage Combined With Ethmoid Bone Graft.

BACKGROUND: Multiple methods are employed to correct short nose deformities, with septal extension graft representing the first choice for Asians. However, the volume of the septal cartilage in many Asian patients is not sufficient to be used alone for such operation. The present work developed a new method combining the septal cartilage with ethmoid bone graft to overcome this issue in Asian patients with short noses. METHODS: Thirty-five women with short noses underwent septal extension graft from February 2015 to March 2017. The endoscopic technique was utilized to harvest the ethmoid bone

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the ethmoid sinus: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cyst is an expansile bone lesion, non-neoplastic in nature, occurring most commonly in long bones. It is uncommon in facial bones and exceptionally rare in ethmoid bone. Ten cases of aneurysmal bone cysts of ethmoid bone have been reported so far. CASE REPORT: A young adolescent presented with decreased vision and pain in the right eye. MRI revealed an expansile lesion having conspicuous fluid levels with a multiloculated appearance in the right ethmoid bone extending to the right orbit. CT was done to characterize better bone details. Both biopsy of the lesion and

New TASER injuries: lacrimal canaliculus laceration and ethmoid bone fracture.

The TASER is a non-lethal conducted electrical weapon intended to incapacitate a person. The growing use of the TASER has resulted in an increased risk of injuries, including those to the face. We report a case of lacrimal canaliculus laceration and ethmoid bone fracture caused by an extra penetration (XP) TASER X26 dart. A 35-year-old was subdued with a TASER head shot; the probe was discharged into the left medial canthus without causing any ocular lesions. A computed tomography scan revealed the probe to be embedded in the left nasolacrimal duct and showed a displaced ethmoid fracture. The

The ethmoid bone: implications for normal and abnormal facial development.

Deficiencies of the ethmoid and embryologically related bones of the anterior cranium have been observed in patients with abnormalities in development or placement of the orbits and eyes, nose, upper lip, mouth, and palate. Although these facial anomalies are commonly associated with holoprosencephaly, they may occur in other syndromes or as isolated cases with normocephaly. Such facial alterations represent the consequences of aberrant migration of tissues into the region normally occupied by the ethmoid bone, beginning early in the sixth week of gestation. The subtle interplay of forces invo

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the ethmoid presenting with proptosis and epiphora.

An aneurysmal bone cyst of ethmoid is a rare and distinct clinicopathologic entity. The diagnosis is important in this localization because it requires multidisciplinary approach in its management. We report a case of a 14-year-old woman presenting to our clinic with the complaint of epiphora and proptosis in the right eye, which were the symptomatic findings of aneurysmal bone cyst of ethmoid.

Transformation of the shape of the ethmoid bone during the course of life.

The ethmoid bone undergoes significant changes in the course of life. The critical period is the time from 9 to 35 years of age. The changes in its shape depend upon the intensity of pneumatization of the ethmoid labyrinth and frontal sinus. If pneumatization of the labyrinth is excessive, the ethmoidal cells are not covered by the frontal bone. On the contrary, they are incorporated in the inferior floor of the anterior cranial fossa, resulting in a possible risk of penetration during surgical ethmoidectomy.

Monostotic fibrous dysplasia originating from ethmoid bone: treatment with endoscopic approach.

We present a case of monostotic fibrous dysplasia of the ethmoidal sinus in an 11-year-old boy. This condition is of interest to the otorhinolaryngologist because of the difficulty of differential diagnosis and treatment. This tumorlike growth was not restricted to the right ethmoidal sinus, but also compressed the orbit and the globe. Endoscopic and transnasal removal of the mass with a drill was performed under general anesthesia. No residual tumor was observed 6 months later.

Dehiscence of the lamina papyracea of the ethmoid bone: CT findings.

PURPOSE: To describe the CT findings characterizing dehiscence of the lamina papyracea. METHODS: Axial and coronal CT scanning of the paranasal sinuses was performed on 783 patients. RESULTS: Dehiscence of the lamina papyracea was noted incidentally in six patients. In all cases dehiscence was characterized by protrusion of orbital fat through a gap in the anterior ethmoid. The posterior limit of the dehiscence was always the basal lamella. The anterior limit varied. CONCLUSION: CT scans are often taken to detect polyps or assess chronic sinusitis. Awareness of dehiscence of the lamina papy

Primary chondrosarcoma of ethmoid bone in a 6-year-old child.

Chondrosarcoma (CS) is a distinctly uncommon tumor in young patients and tends to be located in the extremities. Cartilaginous tumors in young patients are benign tumors. We report a case of a childhood CS in a 6-year-old boy who presented with right-sided proptosis. Radiological examination revealed a large destructive mass in right ethmoidal sinus extending into the surrounding sphenoidal sinus, intracranially, and the into right orbit, causing proptosis. Biopsy of the mass showed characteristic features of a well-differentiated CS. There are no reports of CS presenting as proptosis and aris

Naso-ethmoid-orbital fractures: classification and role of primary bone grafting.

A detailed review of 80 patients with severe naso-ethmoid-orbital injuries has facilitated the classification of these injuries into five types. The recognition and diagnosis of each specific injury pattern will define the correct treatment choice in each instance. Special attention should be focused on injuries with comminution and bone loss in the medial wall and floor of the orbit, with loss of cartilaginous nasal support, and with orbital displacement and dystopia. An open, direct approach to these fractures with meticulous reduction, internal fixation, and repair of the medial canthal lig

[Eosinophilic adenoma of the nose and ethmoid bone simulating a malignant tumor].

A 82-year old woman patient was first diagnosed to have a dacryocystitis and was treated at the Department of Ophthalmology. Clinical examination and x-ray of the paranasal sinuses including tomographs led to the suspicion of a malignant, infiltratively growing tumour in the region of the left cheek and of the left ethmoidal cells. After endonasal removal of the tumour that obstructed the left nasal cavity and ethmoidal cells, histological diagnosis revealed an eosinophilic adenoma. Dacryocystitis had been caused secondarily by the impairment of lacrymal flow. Now, one year later, the patient

[Aneurysmal bone cyst of the ethmoid: paralateronasal or endoscopic surgery? Case report].

AIM: To report a typical case operated on under endonasal endoscopic surgery. CASE REPORT: A 20 year old girl came to the clinic with a left eye exophtalmus. Nasal endoscopy revealed a tumour developped into the left nasal fossa. Imaging allowed to suspect an ethmoidal aneurysmal cyst. CT showed a large tumour involving the left ethmoid, extending into the frontal and maxillary sinuses, with a fluid level in the middle of the tumour. MRI eliminated intracranial extension, showed a cystic component in the middle of the tumour and the presence of hemosiderin signals on T2. Complete resection of

[Functional endoscopic ethmoid bone revision in inflammatory paranasal sinus diseases in childhood].

A total of 57 children aged between 5 and 15 years underwent endoscopic ethmoid surgery for recurrent acute or chronic rhinogenic sinusitis, chronic sinusitis associated with bronchial asthma or chronic bronchitis, early rhinogenous orbital complications and paranasal sinus disease associated with mucoviscidosis. The indications for surgical intervention are based on symptoms, the findings on nasal endoscopy and a CT scan of the paranasal sinuses in the coronal plane. The preoperative examination shows that in childhood there are endoscopically detectable anatomical variations of the ethmoid b

Concurrent osteoblastoma and aneurysmal bone cyst of the ethmoid sinus: case report.

A unique case of osteoblastoma and aneurysmal bone cyst of the ethmoid sinus is reported. A causal relationship may exist between the two entities. The computed tomography appearance consisted of a dense lesion with a thin sclerotic rim containing a low-attenuation center, causing ethmoid sinus enlargement. Similar radiologic appearances are seen with other less rare pathologies.

Chondromyxoid fibroma of the nasal bone with extension into the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses.

Chondromyxoid fibroma is a rare benign tumour whose histological appearance may easily be misinterpreted as chondrosarcoma. It has a tendency to recur locally unless completely excised. A rare case of the tumour affecting the nasal bone with extension into the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses and impingement on the cribiform plate is presented. Complete excision was achieved by the craniofacial resection approach.
