Gender differences in marital violence: A cross-ethnic study among Bengali, Garo, and Santal communities in rural Bangladesh.

Studies on marital violence (MV) in Bangladesh have primarily focused on the women of the mainstream Bengali people, although half of the population is men, and there are also ethnic minority communities with diverse gender constructions. The current study examined the gender differences in MV among the matrilineal ethnic minority Garo, patrilineal ethnic minority Santal, and the patrilineal mainstream Bengali communities in rural Bangladesh. Adopting a cross-sectional design, we randomly included 1,929 currently married men and women from 24 villages. We used cross-tabulations as well as mult

Reproductive Coercion and Intimate Partner Violence Victimization Among a Racially and Ethnically Diverse Young Adult Sample.

Reproductive coercion is an understudied form of intimate partner violence (IPV) that occurs when a person attempts to control the autonomous reproductive decision making of their intimate partner. Previous research has demonstrated that individuals who experience reproductive coercion are more likely to experience other forms of IPV (e.g., physical and sexual). Research has also shown that Black/African American and Latinx/Hispanic individuals are at an increased risk of experiencing reproductive coercion compared to their White/Non-Hispanic peers. However, most of the research on reproductiv

Intimate partner violence and postpartum contraceptive use: the role of race/ethnicity and prenatal birth control counseling.

OBJECTIVES: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major problem that could affect reproductive decision making. The aim of this study is to examine the association between IPV and contraceptive use and assess whether the association varies by receipt of prenatal birth control counseling and race/ethnicity. STUDY DESIGN: This study analyzed the 2004-2008 national Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) that included 193,310 women with live births in the United States. IPV was determined by questions that asked about physical abuse by a current or former partner in the 12 months befo

'Not men enough to rule!': politicization of ethnicities and forcible circumcision of Luo men during the postelection violence in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: As a contribution to ongoing research addressing sexual violence in war and conflict situations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Rwanda, this paper argues that the way sexual violence intersects with other markers of identity, including ethnicity and class, is not clearly articulated. Male circumcision has been popularized, as a public health strategy for prevention of HIV transmission, although evidence of its efficacy is disputable and insufficient attention has been given to the social and cultural implications of male circumcision. METHODS: This paper draws from

Exploring Multiple Forms of Intimate Partner Violence in a Gender and Racially/Ethnically Diverse Sample of Transgender Adults.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is highly prevalent in transgender (trans) populations in the United States; however, details about its manifestations and correlates have not been well captured. Using data from the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, we analyzed weighted data from 23,999 adult transgender participants to estimate the prevalence and explore correlates of five IPV subtypes: psychological IPV, physical IPV, trans-related IPV, stalking, and forced sex committed by an intimate partner. Regression models examined race/ethnicity, gender identity, past-year incarceration, past-year sex work

Social Reactions to Intimate Partner Violence Disclosure Among Low-Income, Ethnically Diverse Community Women.

Friends and family members' reactions to intimate partner violence (IPV) disclosure play an important role in social support because disclosure often precedes requests for support. Perceptions of social reactions to IPV disclosure are likely to vary by context. Yet, research is limited on the role of ethnicity and severity of physical violence in perceptions of social reactions. We examined perceptions of social reactions to IPV disclosure using data from Wave 6 interviews for Project HOW: Health Outcomes of Women. Participants ( N = 201) were asked proportionately how many friends and family

The longitudinal association between alcohol use and intimate partner violence among ethnically diverse community women.

Research has consistently demonstrated a strong link between substance misuse and the perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV). However, studies examining whether substance misuse is associated with IPV victimization have been mixed. Using data collected from 835 low-income ethnically diverse community women, this study extends previous research by utilizing a longitudinal design, considering men's and women's alcohol use, and examining multiple forms of abuse. Despite overall decreases in drinking and abuse, the frequency of male partners' drinking continued to be associated with their

Concentrated Affluence and Deprivation and Spatial Distribution of Firearm Violence: Racial/Ethnic Disparities Across Urban Neighborhoods in the U.S.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined whether neighborhood-level concentration of deprivation relative to affluence is associated with spatial variation in shootings and whether this association differs by the racial/ethnic composition of neighborhoods. METHODS: Tract-level firearm violence data from 2020 to 2023 were obtained for 100 U.S. cities from the American Violence database. A modern measure of income inequality-Index of Concentration at the Extremes-and negative binomial regression models were used to estimate the marginal effects of concentration at the extremes on shootings across Blac

Victimisation in other- and self-directed violence as a function of ethnicity and primary diagnosis among inpatients with serious mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Among individuals with serious mental illness (SMI), victimisation has been found to increase the risk of engaging in other- and self-directed violence. However, rates of victimisation within this population have been found to vary by ethnic group and primary diagnosis. AIMS: This study primarily aimed to examine the relationship between victimisation and other- and self-directed violence among a sample of inpatients with SMI during the first 3 months of admission. The role of ethnicity and primary diagnosis were also explored. METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilised data fr

Differential Exposure to Severe Intimate Partner Violence: Prevalence and Correlates in a Racially and Ethnically Diverse Sample of Immigrant Women.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a critical public health issue, with immigrant women identified as being at heightened risk for severe and near-lethal IPV. This cross-sectional study examined the prevalence of physical, sexual, and psychological IPV among immigrant women in the United States. Further, using the socio-ecological model, it explored the correlates of frequent and severe physical and sexual IPV, near-lethal IPV, and IPV-related injuries at the individual, relationship, and societal/cultural levels. Data were collected from 1,265 immigrant women survivors of IPV from divers

Intimate partner violence, depression, PTSD, and use of mental health resources among ethnically diverse black women.

This study examined exposure to violence and risk for lethality in intimate partner relationships as factors related to co-occurring MH problems and use of mental health (MH) resources among women of African descent. Black women with intimate partner violence (IPV) experiences (n = 431) were recruited from primary care, prenatal or family planning clinics in the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Severity of IPV was significantly associated with co-occurring MH problems, but was not associated with the use of MH resources among African-American women. Risk for lethality and co-occurrin

Mental Telehealth Utilization Patterns Among High School Students from Racial and Ethnic Minority Backgrounds Affected by Violence and Substance Use.

BACKGROUND: Recent data show high school students from racial and ethnic minority (REM) backgrounds in the United States confront a twofold challenge, marked by the highest rates of firearm-related homicides since 1994 and increased youth substance use. The pandemic increased online and telehealth usage opportunities for at-risk REM youth. Therefore, this study investigated (1) the frequency and prevalence of co-occurring youth violence and substance use among REM adolescents, (2) racial/ethnic, age, and natal sex (as gender data was not collected) differences in patterns and trends in co-occu

Posttraumatic Stress and Drug Use-Related Harm: Ethnic-Racial Identity as a Moderator for Women of Color Enduring Partner Violence.

OBJECTIVE: Intimate partner violence is highly prevalent, with approximately one in two women reporting experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) at some point in their lifetime. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is etiologically tied to trauma-including experiences of IPV-and is associated with drug use-related harm. Women of color experience higher rates of IPV, PTSD, and drug use-related harm compared to their white counterparts; however, a dearth of research has been conducted on the relation between PTSD symptoms and drug use-related harm among women of color experiencing IPV. The mental health and substance use treatment experiences of racially and ethnically minoritised women who have experienced sexual violence.

The mental health and substance use treatment experiences of racially and ethnically minoritised women who have experienced sexual violence is not well understood. To address this we conducted a systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies. Our search strategy included electronic searches of 18 databases and grey literature, citation tracking and reference list screening. Studies were eligible if they presented qualitative data from racially and/or ethnically minoritised women or girls, who had experienced sexual violence at any age and described their experiences of receiving t

Prevalence and the Interrelationship of Different Types of Intimate Partner Violence Among Racial and Ethnic College Students in the United States and Canada.

While studies have shown a heightened risk for intimate partner violence among racial and ethnic minority groups, other research has recognized that many individuals experience multiple forms of violence in an intimate relationship. Limited studies have highlighted these patterns among college students across different countries. This comparative study examined the prevalence and co-occurrence of intimate partner violence by utilizing the Spring 2019 cycle data of the American College Health Association National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA II) survey collected in Canada and the United

Discussions about intimate partner violence during prenatal care in the United States: the role of race/ethnicity and insurance status.

Over 1.5 million women are physically, sexually, and emotionally abused by intimate partners in the U.S. each year. Despite the severe health consequences and costs associated with intimate partner violence (IPV), most health providers fail to assess patients for abuse. It was of interest to examine the occurrence of IPV discussions during prenatal care (PNC) visits among women who experienced IPV. This study analyzed data from the 2004-2008 National Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System which included 195,687 women who delivered a live birth in the U.S. IPV victimization was measured us

The Impact of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Ethnic Discrimination, and Nativity on Nicotine Dependence among Female Hispanic Survivors of Physical Intimate Partner Violence.

Background: Nicotine dependence (ND) is an understudied public health problem among Hispanic women experiencing physical intimate partner violence (PIPV). Despite multiple calls for such studies, little is known about the associations of PTSD, ethnic discrimination, and nativity with ND among female Hispanic survivors of PIPV. Objectives: This study aimed to do the following: 1) replicate the PTSD-ND association in a sample of female Hispanic survivors of PIPV, and 2) examine the impact of ethnic discrimination and nativity on ND among 378 female Hispanic survivors of PIPV. We hypothesized tha

Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic men's experiences of gender-based violence, help-seeking behaviours and psychosocial interventions in the United Kingdom: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is an issue of public health concern. Yet most research on GBV focuses predominantly on women. A gap remains in a review of Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) men's experiences of gender-based violence, help-seeking behaviours, and interventions to improve their psychosocial wellbeing in the United Kingdom. This review addressed the gap. METHODS: Six databases were searched (PsycINFO, ProQuest Central, Scopus, Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstract, PudMed, and Embase) for published articles between 2011 and June 2025. N = 10 studies met the inc

Disproportionate burden of violence: Explaining racial and ethnic disparities in potential years of life lost among homicide victims, suicide decedents, and homicide-suicide perpetrators.

Research indicates that the burden of violent death in the United States is disproportionate across racial and ethnic groups. Yet documented disparities in rates of violent death do not capture the full extent of this inequity. Recent studies examining race-specific rates of potential years of life lost-a summary measure of premature mortality-indicate that persons of color may die at younger ages than their counterparts, leading to increased trauma among surviving family members, friends, and communities. This study examines racial and ethnic disparities in potential years of life lost among
