The integration of photosensitization with Indigenous knowledge offers a promising framework for exploring more sustainable therapeutic approaches. This review explores how the ethnobotanical knowledge of the Dayak communities of Borneo (Indonesia), particularly the traditional use of brightly coloured medicinal plants for dermatological treatments, may provide a biologically informed framework for prioritizing plant-derived photosensitizer candidates. The biosynthetic pathways and photochemical potential of key metabolites associated with selected Dayak medicinal taxa (Curcuma longa, Etlinger

Thirteen species of Iphiona are distributed in Asia and Africa. Though Iphiona plants have a history of usage among local people, the research on their phytochemistry or biological activity has been limited to some studies in recent years. This review aimed to collect the present data about Iphiona species and introduce these plants as interesting candidates for future studies. The published studies up to March 2025 were collected from Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The keywords included: Iphiona AND ethnobotany, ethnomedicine, traditional medicine, natural molecule, food,

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Hypericum species have been used traditionally as astringent, antipyretic, diuretic, antiphlogistic, analgesic, and antidepressant in Europe, America, Africa, and Asia. One of the most extensively investigated medicinal herbs, H. perforatum L. (St. John's wort), is widely used in many countries to treat mild to moderate mental depression. Hypericum species are abundant throughout China, including 30 used as ethnomedicines. There are limited publications describing the ethnobotanical uses and biological activities associated with Hypericum species in China. Some

The traditional use of medicinal plants around the world has a long history, predominantly in low- and middle-income countries. Previous ethnobotanical research pertaining to urban environments demonstrated that the legacy of the use of medicinal plant species persists worldwide; however, information about the main city in the occidental part of Mexico is scarce regarding this traditional knowledge and its variation during the last few decades. A database was created from interviews with local people who had inhabited the oldest neighborhoods of Guadalajara for at least 30 years and by using d

Hagenia abyssinica: (Bruce) J.F.Gmel. (H. abyssinica), commonly known as "kosso," is a prevalent phytomedicine addressing aliments across Ethiopia. Traditionally, it is used to treat fever, abdominal pain, respiratory illnesses, intestinal parasitic infections, wound healing, and cancer. Current research has revealed its anthelmintic, antimicrobial, antihyperglycemic, antidyslipidemic, antidiarrheal, and antioxidant activities. These pharmacological properties might be attributed to the presence of secondary metabolites, such as terpenoids, flavonoids, and phenols. Its crude extract is safe in

Seven species of Elsholtzia from upper northern Thailand were ethnobotanically surveyed, and the plant parts utilized by local communities were collected for chemical analysis and antiglycation activity evaluation. The 80% methanol extracts were concentrated and analyzed for total soluble phenolic content using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, and phytochemical profiling was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) against standard phenolic compounds. In addition, the extracts were investigated for antiglycation activity using the methylglyoxal (MGO)-BSA method, with aminoguanidi

As a Turkish traditional medicinal plant, aerial parts of Lotus corniculatus L. subsp. corniculatus (Fabaceae) are used as a painkiller, antihemoroidal, diuretic and sedative. In this study, the antidepressant potential of the plant has been attempted to clarify. Extracts with water, n-Hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol were prepared respectively from the aerial parts. Antidepressant activity of the extracts were researched by using three different in vivo test models namely a tail suspension test, antagonism of tetrabenazine-induced hypothermia, ptosis, and suppression of locomotor activity

BACKGROUND: Traditional medicine is a major component in the primary healthcare system in the southeast of Iran, which has a rich floral diversity. However, there is no comprehensive report on the use of medicinal herbs in this specific region. This traditional usage of medicinal plants by local communities could serve as a source for pharmacological and phytochemical studies. The main objective of this study was to identify ethnopharmacological knowledge on medicinal plant species and their local healing applications by the folk communities of Kerman province in the southeast of Iran.
