Novel ethological endophenotypes in a transgenic mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant, neurodegenerative disorder with a characteristic triad of cognitive, affective and motor symptoms. Transgenic HD mice show excellent construct and face validity for many of these symptoms, however the decline in some facets of every day activity in humans is difficult to model. One approach is the assessment of species-relevant behaviors. Here we described three ethologically appropriate tests in the mouse-olfactory sensitivity, nest-building and sexually-motivated vocalizations. In R6/1 HD mice, olfactory and nest-building tests were sensiti

Quantitative ethology of schistosome miracidia characterizes a conserved snail peptide that inhibits host recognition.

Over 700 million people are at risk of contracting schistosomiasis due to regular exposure to freshwater sources where infected snails, the obligate intermediate hosts of schistosomes, are endemic. Although mass drug administration of praziquantel effectively controls the disease in most regions, achieving elimination will require reducing populations of infected snails that shed the human-infective larval stage. Considerable research effort has focused on parasite development and immunological responses after snail penetration, but comparatively little is known about the molecular and behavio

[Effect of Ganmai Dazao Decoction on ethology of rats with PTSD and its mechanism].

This study aimed to explore the effect of Ganmai Dazao Decoction on the ethology of rats with posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) and study the related mechanism through the changes in magnetic resonance imaging and protein expression. Sixty rats were randomly divided into 6 groups, namely the normal group, the model group, the low(1 g·kg~(-1)), medium(2 g·kg~(-1)), and high-dose Ganmai Dazao Decoction groups(4 g·kg~(-1)), and the positive control group(intragastric administration with 10.8 mg·kg~(-1) of fluoxetine), with 10 rats in each group. Two weeks after inducing PTSD by single-prolonged

[Modern concepts of pathogenesis, ethological factors and diagnosis of viral cystitis].

This review assesses the state of the art in viral infections and inflammatory bladder diseases, their epidemiology, pathogenesis, and diagnostic features. The search was conducted using Medline, PubMed, and EMBASE. The literature search results indicate that chronic recurrent cystitis (CRC) of viral etiology has been actively discussed and has been presented in the press and searchable databases in recent years. The presented studies focus on diagnostic issues, particularly differential diagnosis between viral pathogens. The objective is to systematize current data on viral cystitis: epidemio

An ethologically relevant paradigm to assess visual contrast sensitivity in rodents.

In the animal kingdom, threat information is perceived mainly through vision. The subcortical visual pathway plays a critical role in the rapid processing of visual information-induced fear, and triggers a response. Looming-evoked behavior in rodents, mimicking response to aerial predators, allowed identify the neural circuitry underlying instinctive defensive behaviors; however, the influence of disk/background contrast on the looming-induced behavioral response has not been examined, either in rats or mice. We studied the influence of the dark disk/gray background contrast in the type of rat

[Ethological-physiological effects of hypoxia on the honeybee Apis mellifera L].

Information on the effect of hypoxia on the behavior and physiological state of the honeybee was compiled and systematized. It was shown that, in the course of colonization of temperate and cold climate zones by the honeybee, natural selection favored the acquisition of an effective mechanism of thermoregulation and high tolerance to hypoxia. It was noted that bees can develop under conditions when the CO2 concentration exceeds the content of this gas in the surface layer of the Earth by more than three orders of magnitude; however, this leads to deviations in the morphometric traits from the

A possible contribution of phenomenology to ethology: application to a behaviour pattern in the mouse.

Classical ethology encourages a causal approach to animal behaviour, using Tinbergen's four questions concerning evolution, function, mechanism and development of behaviour. It sets aside the study of mental processes, which could otherwise help to unify our picture of the relationships between animal and environment. Here the steps in research focused on the psychological meaning of a peculiar behaviour in the mouse--carrying its tail--and what this implies regarding the mouse's cognitive world are given. Initial empirical observations suggested epistemic choices concerning space and object n

An ethological analysis of the influence of perinatally-administered diazepam on murine behaviour.

A number of studies have found that the perinatal exposure of rodents to various tranquilizing agents alters their adult behaviour. Given the known anti-aggressive influence of acute doses of diazepam it was hypothesized that, when administered during pregnancy, this drug would change the adult social behaviour. The social interactions of adult male mice whose mothers were treated with diazepam or appropriate controls during pregnancy were video-taped and subjected to an ethological analysis that involved counting the incidences of 43 distinct postures. Prenatal but not postnatal diazepam trea

An evaluation of ethological criteria and methods in the assessment of well-being in sows.

The literature on behaviour of sows under different management systems was reviewed to evaluate ethological criteria and methods in the assessment of wellbeing. Daily activity time seems of little value in the assessment of wellbeing when housing systems are compared. It is low in confined sows, especially those that are tethered or otherwise restricted. Lack of exercise, however, has well-documented adverse effects in tethered and restricted sows. A number of well-known responses to conflicts and frustration have been observed in confined sows, but the effect of tethering and restriction vari

What is working memory for? An ethological approach to working memory in children and adults.

Typical visual working memory tasks involve many trials of rapid presentations of simple stimuli to be remembered across short delays. This is rarely how memory is used in the real world: we are almost always able to resample information by making an action just-in-time (eye or head movements) or create one if our memory is not sufficient (cognitive offloading). Deciding how often to sample vs. how much to remember depends on the costs of each option. In this chapter, we bring together work on active online visual memory, research on the sampling-remembering trade-off, cognitive offloading, an

The hawk/goose story: the classical ethological experiments of Lorenz and Tinbergen, revisited.

We present a historical account of the story behind the famous hawk/goose experiments of Lorenz and Tinbergen in a wider context of cognitive ethology. We discuss their significance, for ethological experimentation in general, and specifically for understanding innate constraints on cognition. As examples of the continuing significance of the hawk/goose paradigm of selective habituation, we discuss its relation to "exposure therapy" of human phobias and the use of hawk silhouettes as deterrents for songbirds. Finally we rephrase Uexküll's thesis of taxon-specific worlds ("Umwelten") as a "Theo

Ethological evidence for sexually exploitative pollinator attraction by Arisaema serratum (Araceae).

Deceptive pollination exploits pollinator perceptual biases while offering no reward. Arisaema (Araceae) employs an extreme form of this strategy, in which fungus gnats are lured into a slippery floral tube that often proves fatal. However, the key factors governing attraction and capture remain poorly understood, partly due to the typically low frequency of floral visitation. Preliminary observations revealed that Arisaema serratum exhibits a relatively high visitation rate of fungus gnats. We therefore conducted direct behavioral observations of pollinators associated with A. serratum in a c

[Ethological competence of Perm Territory dwellers in the assurance of personal infection safety].

The authors attempted to analyze preventive measures against infectious and parasitic diseases, which were used domestically by the Perm Territory population, their conjugacy with the stereotypes of attitude towards domestic animals, as well as behavioral features of compliance andcompetence in the assurance of infection safety. The found gaps in the assurance of personal infection safety (drinking unboiled water, unprotected sex, disregard of helminth prevention in domestic animals, and unwillingness to go in for sports) are coherent with the epidemiological situation in the Perm Territory an

Gender differences in depression: an ethological study of nonverbal behavior during interviews.

Previous studies of gender differences in the phenomenology of depression have focused mostly on symptoms as measured by self-report questionnaires or clinician-rated scales. In this study, we examined gender differences in the interpersonal behavior of depressed patients by using ethological techniques which involve direct observation of behavior. The nonverbal behavior of 72 nondepressed volunteers and 68 patients with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of nonpsychotic unipolar depression was videorecorded during clinical interviews and scored according to an ethological scoring system including 37 behav

Affect regulation in alexithymia: an ethological study of displacement behavior during psychiatric interviews.

Displacement activities (i.e., self-directed behaviors such as self-touching, scratching, and self-grooming) are a reliable ethological indicator of increased emotional and physiological arousal throughout the phylogenetic scale. We hypothesized that, in alexithymic individuals, the failure to regulate cognitively distressing emotions might result in increased displacement behavior. The nonverbal behavior of 30 patients with depressive or anxiety disorders was video-recorded during psychiatric interviews and analyzed using an ethological scoring system. Before being interviewed, each patient c

Utility of ethological analysis to overcome locomotor confounds in elevated maze models of anxiety.

The elevated plus-maze is a commonly used model to identify putative anxiolytic and anxiogenic drugs. However, the validity of elevated plus-maze and other recently developed variants such as the elevated zero-maze has recently been questioned on the grounds that both the reference anxiolytic drug chlordiazepoxide and the psychostimulant d-amphetamine increase open arm exploration and stimulate locomotor activity. These findings suggest that measures of "anxiety" in the elevated maze cannot be adequately dissociated from simple changes in locomotor activity, which may confound the interpretati

Consideration of the relevance of ethological animal models for human repetitive behavioral spectrum disorders.

Treatment successes of various stereotyped behaviors in animals and humans has renewed interest in ethologic animal models for the study of psychiatric disorders. This report presents another such behavior occurring in horses to weaving. This anomalous, repetitive, and purposeless behavior draws analogies to human compulsive spectrum behaviors. A "weaver" provided an opportunity to evaluate serotonin, dopamine, and opioid neurotransmitter system contributions by probing each with a selective agent in A-B-A-C-A-D design. The horse was treated in sequential 1-month periods separated by 1-month w
