Phytotoxic effects and environmental safety of nanoparticles incorporating a eucalyptus essential oil.

Eucalyptus essential oils (EOs) have strong herbicidal properties, making them promising alternatives to synthetic pesticides. However, their high volatility and hydrophobicity can limit their application. Thus, this study aimed to incorporate a Eucalyptus globulus Labill. EO into nanoparticles and evaluate their herbicidal potential and environmental safety. Briefly, a commercial eucalyptus essential oil (CEEO) was incorporated into lipid (LN-CEEO) and keratin (KN-CEEO) nanoparticles. Both nanoformulations exhibited high encapsulation efficiencies (approximately 99%), adequate long-term stabi

Seizure caused by dermal application of over-the-counter eucalyptus oil head lice preparation.

Natural plant oils such as eucalyptus are common worldwide in non-prescription natural health products. Oral ingestion of eucalyptus oil is well known to produce neurological symptoms and seizures; however, its dermal use is presumed to be safe. We describe a brief, self-limited, tonic-clonic seizure in a healthy 4-year-old girl following dermal exposure to eucalyptus oil as directed for treatment of head lice. Initial symptoms were vomiting, lethargy, and ataxia followed by a grand mal seizure. Recovery occurred rapidly after the skin was washed. Health care providers should be aware that euc

Antibacterial, Antioxidant, and Antiproliferative Activities of Corymbia citriodora and the Essential Oils of Eight Eucalyptus Species.

Background: Essential oils (EOs) have shown antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antiproliferative activity, which may, alone or in combination with other substances, potentially be used for the development of new drugs. However, their chemical variability, depending on the species, varieties, or geographical origin (among other factors) determines different bioactivities that need to be evaluated. Methods: The antioxidant activity of Corymbia citriodora and eight Eucalyptus species EOs was determined using two different methods: the scavenging ability of 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline

Inhaled peppermint, rosemary and eucalyptus essential oils do not change spirometry in healthy individuals.

Essential oils of herbal origin are widely used in the treatment of diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract primarily due to their antibacterial and antiviral effects. Menthol, the major component of the essential oil of mint (Mentha) species, exhibits antispasmodic activity, which might result in improved lung function. In a randomized experiment, 106 healthy participants received nebulized peppermint, eucalyptus, or rosemary essential oil for 15 min or no treatment (control). None of the essential oils had an impact on the measured spirometric variables (forced vital capacity, peak

Discovery of eucalyptus essential oil as a novel colistin adjuvant eradicate multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria poses a significant public health risk due to its multidrug resistance mechanism. The discovery of novel antibiotic adjuvant to combat clinical superbugs is an urgent priority for addressing the antibiotic resistance crisis. Here, through checkerboard assays, time-kill analyses, disk diffusion tests, biofilm inhibition assays, and microscopic examinations, eucalyptus essential oil (EEO) was identified as a potent enhancer of colistin activity. Mechanistic analyses further demonstrated that EEO downregulated bacterial genes associated with iron h
