The first report of Hepatozoon canis identified in Vulpes vulpes and ticks from Italy.

This is the first report on the presence of Hepatozoon canis in Vulpes vulpes in Italy. During the years 2005 and 2006, a total of 119 foxes were collected and their spleen tissues were screened by microscopy, polymerase chain reaction, and sequencing. In the same area, 290 ticks were picked off from dogs or collected from the environment. Microscopy detected inclusion bodies regarded as belonging to the genus Hepatozoon in four samples, whereas molecular diagnostics evidenced 16 foxes (13.4%) and 6 ticks (2.1%) positive to H. canis. The H. canis isolates we found in foxes, compared with the s

Cyclospora: a newly identified protozoan pathogen of man.

A newly recognized protozoan human parasite, Cyclospora spp. has been incriminated as the cause of prolonged diarrhoea. It has been isolated from children, immunocompetent and immunocompromised adults. One hundred and thirty immunocompetent patients, 80 children and 50 adults; their illness was characterized by prolonged watery diarrhoea, were enrolled in this study. Stool sediments were examined as wet mounts and stained by both, modified Ziehl-Neelsen and aniline carbol methyl violet stains. The protozoan pathogen was identified as spherical bodies measuring 9-10 microns in diameter in about

First case of clinical canine hepatozoonosis in Ukraine.

Canine hepatozoonosis is caused by the tick-borne protozoans Hepatozoon canis and Hepatozoon americanum (Apicomplexa, Hepatozoidae). While H. americanum is widespread in the south-central and south-eastern United States, H. canis is documented in Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America, and is transmitted to dogs by ingesting infected ticks, primarily Rhipicephalus sanguineus. In Europe, this vector is mainly distributed in the Mediterranean region but endemic areas within Central Europe have also been reported, possibly facilitated by climate change. A mixed-breed male puppy, ∼3-7 months-old,

Molecular characterization of Hepatozoon canis in dogs from Can Tho in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Hepatozoon canis (H. canis) is an intracellular protozoan parasite transmitted by ingestion of infected ticks. It is responsible for canine hepatozoonosis, a disease that affects the health and well-being of dogs worldwide. The infection can range from subclinical to severe, depending on the host's immune status and parasite burden. Hepatozoon canis has been reported in multiple regions, but data on its prevalence and genetic characteristics in Vietnam, particularly in Can Tho City, remains limited. AIM: To determine the infection rate and genetic characteristics of H. canis in do

Characterization of Hepatozoon spp. in Leptodactylus chaquensis and Leptodactylus podicipinus from two regions of the Pantanal, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

Hepatozoon sp. are parasites that commonly infect frogs and arthropod vectors. This species has variability in the morphological and morphometric characteristics. Due to these variations, the naming of the species is thus impaired and only by visualizing the sporogonic cycle in vector and by molecular studies this problem can be solved. Recently, the use of molecular genetics has helped the species denomination. In this work, we collected 145 frogs (68 Leptodactylus chaquensis and 77 Leptodactylus podicipinus) in different sampling sites, where were found 18 (26.47%) L. chaquensis and 24 (31.1

Are fish paratenic natural hosts of the caiman haemoparasite Hepatozoon caimani?

The susceptibility of two fish and four mosquito species to the Caiman yacare haemoparasite Hepatozoon caimani was experimentally investigated. Mosquitoes belonging to four species (Aedes fluviatilis, Aedes albopictus, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus) were blood-fed on two naturally infected C. yacare from the Central-West Region of Brazil that exhibited distinct levels of parasitaemia: caimans A (11.05%) and B (1.25%). None of the engorged A. fluviatilis, A. albopictus or A. aegypti mosquitoes fed on caiman A survived for the duration of the sporogonic cycle; the great majority of th

Gnathia aureamaculosa, a likely definitive host of Haemogregarina balistapi and potential vector for Haemogregarina bigemina between fishes of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.

Investigations to determine whether juvenile gnathiid isopods are vectors of haemogregarines between coral reef fishes were undertaken at Lizard Island, Australia. Haemogregarina balistapi parasitaemias in triggerfish, Rhinecanthus aculeatus, decreased under gnathiid-free, laboratory conditions, compared with those in tagged R. aculeatus returned to the reef. Gnathia aureamaculosa juveniles were common ectoparasites of reef R. aculeatus and laboratory reared specimens of this gnathiid were fed on R. aculeatus infected with H. balistapi. Subsequent squashes of this gnathiid contained haemogrega

The development of Hepatozoon sipedon sp. nov. (Apicomplexa: Adeleina: Hepatozoidae) in its natural host, the Northern water snake (Nerodia sipedon sipedon), in the culicine vectors Culex pipiens and C. territans, and in an intermediate host, the Northern leopard frog (Rana pipiens).

The life cycle of Hepatozoon sipedon sp. nov. was studied in two snake species, the Northern water snake and the Eastern garter snake, in its mosquito hosts Culex pipiens and C. territans, and in the Northern leopard frog. Gametogenesis, fertilization and sporogony occurred within fat body cells in the haemocoel of mosquitoes that had fed on infected water snakes. Mature oocysts averaging 263 microns in diameter and containing more than 500 sporocysts were observed in mosquitoes 28 days post-feeding. Each sporocyst enclosed eight sporozoites. Dizoic cysts were found in the liver of frogs that

Diversity of Hepatozoon (Apicomplexa: Hepatozoidae) parasites in snakes from the Amazonia region, with description of a new species.

In this study, by combining morphological and molecular data (18S rRNA gene), we identified four species of Hepatozoon in snakes from the Brazilian Amazonia region. We describe a new species of Hepatozoon infecting Bothrops atrox, provide the first molecular data for Hepatozoon luhei from Corallus hortulana, and record Hepatozoon cuestensis in Zonateres lanei and Hepatozoon odwyerae in Chironius carinatus. Furthermore, through a literature survey, we present an overview of studies on the genus Hepatozoon in snakes in Brazil, spanning over 120 years of research, highlighting species richness an

First molecular detection and genetic diversity of Hepatozoon sp. (Apicomplexa) and Brugia sp. (Nematoda) in a crocodile monitor in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand.

The crocodile monitor (Varanus salvator) is the most common monitor lizard in Thailand. Based on habitat and food, they have the potential to transmit zoonoses, with a high possibility of infecting ectoparasites and endoparasites. Diseases that could infect crocodile monitors and be transmitted to other animals, including humans. This research aims to identify and evaluate the phylogenetic relationships of Hepatozoon sp. and sheathed microfilaria in crocodile monitors. The phylogenetic analyses of Hepatozoon, based on 18S rRNA, and sheathed microfilaria, based on the COX1 gene, revealed that t

Clinical, diagnostic and epidemiological implications of Hepatozoon spp., Babesia spp. and Leishmania infantum infection in cats and dogs in a Mediterranean periurban setting.

Hepatozoon spp., Babesia spp. and Leishmania infantum are common parasites of dogs in Mediterranean countries and are less frequent in cats, particularly Babesia spp. and L. infantum. Moreover, there is limited information on coinfections between these parasites and on L. infantum's distribution in blood, skin and lymphoid tissue in cats. We used PCR and DNA sequencing to investigate the prevalence of these parasites and the aetiology of Hepatozoon spp. and Babesia spp., in blood, skin, spleen and lymph node samples from up to 212 stray cats and 82 abandoned dogs in southeast Spain. All except

Scarcity of Hepatozoon americanum in Gulf Coast tick vectors and potential for cultivating the protozoan.

American canine hepatozoonosis (ACH) is a debilitating tick-borne disease characterized by pyrexia, body wasting, myopathy, mucopurulent ocular discharge, and periosteal proliferation. The causative agent, Hepatozoon americanum, is an apicomplexan that utilizes the Gulf Coast tick, Amblyomma maculatum, as its definitive host and vector. Unlike most tick-borne disease agents, H. americanum is not transmitted via a tick bite, but is transmitted when canids ingest a tick vector that contains sporulated oocysts within the tick hemocoel or paratenic hosts with cystozoites. Our understanding of H. a

Persistent diarrhea in the returned traveler.

In conclusion, the causes of chronic diarrhea in the returned traveler are protean. Careful evaluation requires an understanding of where the traveler has been, when they were there, the type of diarrheal illness, medications taken, and knowledge of the patients' other medical problems. Protozoa, particularly G. lamblia, C. parvum, and C. cayatenensis, are among the more commonly identified agents. If the patient is immunocompromised, microsporidia and Isospora become more likely, and a prior history of antimicrobial use raises the possibility of C. difficile colitis. Occasionally helminths, w

The first clinical case of Hepatozoon felis infection in a cat from Panama.

Hepatozoon felis is the most prevalent Hepatozoon species infecting domestic cats worldwide; however, clinical disease is considered uncommon. This study describes the first clinically confirmed case of H. felis infection in a domestic cat from Panama. A 3-year-old male cat presented with painful periostitis of long bones, poor body condition and leukocytosis with marked neutrophilia. Hepatozoon gamonts were detected in neutrophils, and infection was confirmed by PCR and sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a highly divergent H. felis lineage clustering separately fr

Severe Tick Infestation and Haemogregarina spp. Infection in a Captive African Rock Python (Python sebae): A Clinical and Parasitological Case from Nigeria.

Ectoparasitic infestations in reptiles-primarily ticks and mites-can significantly compromise their health and fitness, particularly in captivity conditions. This brief report describes a severe tick infestation and concurrent Haemogregarina spp. infection in an African rock python (Python sebae) at a private zoo in Abeokuta, Nigeria. Initial clinical evaluation revealed heavy infestations of Amblyomma latum ticks, pronounced facial swelling, incomplete shedding, anorexia, lethargy, and the presence of intraerythrocytic Haemogregarina-like gamonts on stained blood smears. Hepatozoon infections in domestic and wild Carnivora: etiology, prevalence, clinical disease, diagnosis and treatment, and redescription of Hepatozoon silvestris, H. martis, and H. ursi.

Hepatozoon spp. are common pathogens in dogs and other Carnivora in many parts of the world, especially in the tropics. There is considerable taxonomic debate concerning the Hepatozoon species infecting Carnivora. Morphological descriptions of several Hepatozoon species are inadequate and their validity is questionable. Additionally, different terminology has been used for the description of life cycle stages. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the Hepatozoon species in the Carnivora, using a uniform terminology. Worldwide prevalence of clinical and subclinical Hepatozoon infections fo

Eosinophilia and leukocyte responses associated with Hepatozoon infection in the Neotropical frog Leptodactylus vastus Lutz, 1930 (Anura: Leptodactylidae).

Amphibians are among the most threatened vertebrates globally, but the physiological mechanisms underlying their vulnerability remain poorly understood, particularly in Neotropical species. This study investigated the associations among body morphometry, Hepatozoon spp. infection, and leukocyte profile of Leptodactylus vastus from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Sixty individuals were analyzed for hematologic and parasitic parameters. Hepatozoon spp. prevalence was 100%, and the leukocyte profile was atypical, characterized by a predominance of eosinophils over lymphocytes. Total gamont abundan
