Variations of the metabolome in the digestive system of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, between summer and autumn.

Rapid climate change threatens the relatively pristine environment of the Southern Ocean. The effects on biogeochemical cycles and their subsequent consequences for the organisms in this area are of significant interest. Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, is the dominant species in the Antarctic ecosystem and a vital component of the Southern Ocean food web. Its metabolism is influenced by the feeding regime, which is governed by environmental conditions. However, little is yet known about the metabolome of Antarctic krill. Here, we investigated metabolite classes that can serve as tracers fo

Mapping encounters between Antarctic krill fishing vessels and air-breathing krill predators using acoustic data from the fishery.

Antarctic krill is a keystone species in the Antarctic marine ecosystem and the target of a growing fishery. Given the ecological importance of krill, concerns have been raised about potential negative impacts of fishing on the Southern Ocean ecosystem. Resource-efficient approaches to fisheries monitoring are particularly valuable in this context due to the high costs associated with data collection in Antarctica. In this study, we trained a segmentation model (U-Net) to extract dives of air-breathing krill predators from more than 30,000 h of active acoustic data collected by three krill fis

Effects of ferrous ions partitioning at the oil-water interface on the oxidative stability of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) oil: Reverse micelles alter the physical location of ferrous ions.

This study investigates the role of ferrous ion partitioning in promoting lipid oxidation in Antarctic krill oil (AKO) containing reverse micelles. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering confirmed the presence of reverse micelles in AKO. AKO with ferrous sulfate (FeSO4, water-soluble iron) and ferrous fumarate (C4H2FeO4, oil-soluble iron) were stored at 60 °C. Interestingly, compared with oil-soluble Fe2+, water-soluble Fe2+ significantly enhanced oxidation. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) showed that water-soluble Fe2+ and lipid hydroperoxides (L

Effectiveness of a combined New Zealand green-lipped mussel and Antarctic krill oil supplement on markers of exercise-induced muscle damage and inflammation in untrained men.

Green-lipped mussel oil (PCSO-524®) has been shown to attenuate signs and symptoms of exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), and krill oil has been shown to have a protective effect against cytokine-induced tissue degradation. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of PCSO-524® and ESPO-572® (75% PCSO-524® and 25% krill oil) on signs and symptoms of EIMD. Fifty-one untrained men consumed 600 mg/d of PCSO-524® (n = 24) or ESPO-572® (n = 27) for 26 d prior to and 72 h following a downhill running bout. Aqueous uptake and sublethal toxicity of p,p'-DDE in non-feeding larval stages of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba).

This study evaluated the toxicological sensitivity of non-feeding larval stages of a key Antarctic species (Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba) to p,p'-dichlorodiphenyl dichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) exposure. The aqueous uptake clearance rate of 84 mL g(-1) preserved weight (p.w.) h(-1) determined for p,p'-DDE in Antarctic krill larvae is comparable to previous findings for small cold water crustaceans and five times slower than the rates reported for an amphipod inhabiting warmer waters. Natural variations in larval physiology appear to influence contaminant uptake and larval krill behavioural

Comparative swarming dynamics of Antarctic krill and ice krill in the Ross Sea Region Marine Protected Area.

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and ice krill (Euphausia crystallorophias) are vital to the Southern Ocean ecosystem, yet their swarming behavior remains poorly understood. This study applied a novel approach in the Ross Sea by directly linking acoustically detected swarms with net-captured krill, enabling precise identification of species and body size-key traits often unavailable in previous studies. From 14 Antarctic krill and 55 ice krill swarms, key properties-depth, length, height, area, and packing concentration-were extracted. Hierarchical clustering grouped swarms into two Antarct

Patterns of total mercury and methylmercury bioaccumulation in Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) along the West Antarctic Peninsula.

We examined mercury (Hg) accumulation in juvenile and adult subpopulations of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) collected west of the Antarctic Peninsula. Samples were collected along a northern cross-shelf transect beginning near Anvers Island and farther south near the sea ice edge in the austral summers of 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015. Regardless of geographical position, mean concentrations of total Hg and methylmercury (MeHg), the form of Hg that biomagnifies in marine food webs, were significantly higher in juvenile than adult krill in all years. In 2013, juvenile Antarctic krill collect

Soy protein isolate-konjac glucomannan hydrogel as a sodium reservoir for flavor modulation and texture enhancement in low-salt Antarctic krill surimi.

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) surimi faces commercialization challenges due to endogenous proteases causing poor gelation, exacerbated by sodium reduction strategies aimed at mitigating health risks from high salt consumption. This study innovatively utilized soy protein isolate-konjac glucomannan (SPI-KGM) sodium-loaded hydrogel as a functional sodium carrier to enhance the quality of low-salt (1.5 % NaCl) Antarctic krill surimi. The hydrogel's structural stability, sodium-loading capacity (1.47 g/100 g at 3 % KGM, pH 7), and heterogeneous sodium distribution were systematically charact

Simultaneous quantification of tin and lead species in Antarctic krill and fish by interfacing high-performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry based on strong cation-exchange and Amphion columns.

Tin and lead are a global concern considering their species-dependent toxicity, bioavailability and transformation. Simultaneous speciation analysis of tin and lead is challenging for a large food capacity containing unstable species. Herein, we developed two sensitive methods for rapid quantification of tin and lead species in Antarctic seafood by high-performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry based on strong cation-exchange and Amphion columns. Inorganic tin and lead, four organotin and two organolead compounds can be analysed in 16 min on a 10-cm Amp

Anti-Osteoarthritic Effects of Antarctic Krill Oil in Primary Chondrocytes and a Surgical Rat Model of Knee Osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by progressive cartilage destruction and synovitis; however, there are no approved disease-modifying OA drugs. Krill oil (KO) has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory properties and alleviate joint pain in knee OA, indicating its potential to target the inflammatory mechanism of OA. Therefore, the anti-OA effects of KO were investigated in primary chondrocytes and a surgical rat model of knee OA. The oral administration of KO at 200 and 100 mg/kg for 8 weeks improved joint swelling and mobility in the animal model and led to increased bone mineral den

Krill Oil in Human Nutrition and Healthy Aging: A Narrative Review of Implications for Intrinsic Capacity and Nutrient Bioavailability.

Krill oil (KO) is a marine-derived nutritional ingredient distinguished by its unique structural composition and increasing relevance in human nutrition, particularly in the context of healthy aging and preservation of intrinsic capacity. Approximately 30-65% of its fatty acids are esterified to phospholipids, a molecular configuration associated with enhanced bioavailability and efficient tissue incorporation of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, even at relatively low doses. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) originates from minimally impacted marine ecosystems, contributing to a favorabl

Refining Zooplankton Diet Composition Studies Over Short and Long Time Scales by Combining 18S Metabarcoding With Fatty Acid Analyses.

Understanding diet composition is essential for unravelling trophic interactions in aquatic ecosystems. DNA metabarcoding, utilising various variable regions of the 18S rRNA gene, is increasingly employed to investigate zooplankton diet composition. However, accurate results depend on rapid inactivation of digestive enzymes and DNA nucleases through proper sample processing and preservation. In this study, we compare the prey communities of Antarctic krill retrieved from the 18S variable regions V4 and V7 and assess how different processing treatments affect the detected prey composition of bo

Krill Oil Treatment Increases Distinct PUFAs and Oxylipins in Adipose Tissue and Liver and Attenuates Obesity-Associated Inflammation via Direct and Indirect Mechanisms.

The development of obesity is characterized by the metabolic overload of tissues and subsequent organ inflammation. The health effects of krill oil (KrO) on obesity-associated inflammation remain largely elusive, because long-term treatments with KrO have not been performed to date. Therefore, we examined the putative health effects of 28 weeks of 3% (w/w) KrO supplementation to an obesogenic diet (HFD) with fat derived mostly from lard. The HFD with KrO was compared to an HFD control group to evaluate the effects on fatty acid composition and associated inflammation in epididymal white adipos
