A herbal tea, made of leaves of ixbut (Euphorbia lancifolia Schlecht.), has been used for several centuries by postpartum Mayan women in Guatemala to stimulate and increase the flow of mother's milk. Ixbut, when mixed with cattle fodder, is reputed to have increased milk yields in cows. To date, the active principle of ixbut has never been isolated. However, this medicinal herb, a natural galactagogue of Central American origin, would appear to be worthy of further chemical and pharmacological study. The following illustrated article describes the history and use of ixbut, and includes chromat…

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The genus Euphorbia (spurges, Euphorbiaceae) is the third largest genus of flowering plants, with almost 2000 species. Its exceptional diversity of growth forms and near-cosmopolitan distribution have attracted human interest since ancient times. For instance in Australia, topical application of latex of Euphorbia peplus L. is used as a home treatment for skin cancer and actinic keratosis. Its use in Australian folk medicine has inspired the release of the drug Picato® (ingenol mebutate), and further fostered interest in natural products and medicinal uses of Eu…

Seven triterpenoids have been isolated from the roots of Euphorbia nematocypha Hand-Mazz. through chromatography on 20% AgNO3-silica gel. One of them was identified as a new compound named nematocyphol on the basis of spectral data (IR, EIMS, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR). Its structure was deduced as IVa. Other compounds were identified as nepehinol acetate (I), germanicol acetate (II), euphol (III), tanaxastanol (Va), 24-methylenecycloartanol (VIa) and nepehinol (VIIa). These compounds were obtained for the first time from this plant.

An ornamental succulent plant sold in many plant stores in the Chicago area has been identified as Euphorbia hermentiana Lem. Open and closed patch testing using undiluted latex from this species was performed on five Caucasian volunteers. Open testing on flexor forearms resulted in irritant follicular dermatitis, while closed testing to the flexor surfaces of both upper arms in each subject produced bullae and vesiculation with residual desquamation and hyperpigmentation. Dermatological signs persisted for over a week following latex application.

Euphorbia paralias is known in traditional medicine as an anti-inflammatory agent, a purgative and for its local anesthetic property. To the best our knowledge, renal toxicity of this substance has not been previously reported. In this paper, we report the case of a 29-year-old male who developed renal damage following ingestion of Euphorbia paralias. He had been on follow-up for nephrotic syndrome since 1986, although irregularly, with several relapses but each responding well to steroid therapy. A kidney biopsy had not been performed earlier due to refusal by the patient. He was off steroids…

BACKGROUND: Euphorbia plants grow in many gardens. Their milky latex is, however, a strong irritant which may induce various ocular lesions from keratoconjunctivitis to severe uveitis.
HISTORY AND SIGNS: A 86-year-old woman developed a unilateral severe anterior chamber inflammation associated with descemtic folds after direct contact with sap of Euphorbia. Visual acuity was limited to counting fingers. Her eye was operated from filtering surgery ten years previously. The patient was closely followed to rule out the diagnosis of bacterial endophthalmitis.
THERAPY AND OUTCOME: Symptoms progre…

A 55-year-old man, without evident sexual risk, presented with symptoms of a urethritis and balanitis. This followed directly from exposure to organic residue from a domestic plant, the Euphorbia or Garden Spurge, found on his fingers after gardening. A review of relevant medical literature reveals little putative association between exposure to this plant and genital symptomatology. However, historical sources are presented suggesting the effect may previously have been well recognised.

With the aim of supporting the folk applications of Euphorbia fischeriana, a phytochemical study was performed, which led to the discovery of 9 compounds, including three new ones (1-3) and six known ones (4-9). Their structures were determined by 1D, 2D NMR, and HRESIMS analysis. In the cytotoxic assays on Hep-3B cell line, 2 showed stronger inhibitory effects (IC50 8.1μmol/L) than that of positive control, and 1, 8 and 9 also gave inhibitory effects in a certain degree with IC50 values of 12.5, 12.0 and 18.7μmol/L, respectively. While on A549, the cytotoxic activities of 1 (IC50 11.9μmol/L) …
