During the period 2004-2014 in the Abruzzi region (Central Italy), muscle samples gathered from hunted wild boars (n=16,323) and retrieved from carcasses of other susceptible wild mammals (n=838) and birds (n=438) were tested for Trichinella larvae according to European Union regulations. Although no positive samples were found from wild birds, 91 wild mammals tested positive. Six species were found to harbor Trichinella spp. infections, namely wolf (Canis lupus, 59 positive samples out of 218), red fox (Vulpes vulpes, 24/480), wild boar (Sus scrofa, 3/16,323), stone marten (Martes foina, 2/27

Dung beetles mostly feed on mammal dung. Throughout the European Alps, the dung produced by local domestic ungulates attracts many species of dung beetles, giving rise to rich and diversified communities that play an important role in the Alpine agricultural ecosystem. There is, therefore, understandable concern about the introduction of exotic livestock, such as alpacas (Vicugna pacos (Linnaeus, 1758)), into the region. This research studied dung beetle assemblages in an Alpine valley where both cattle and alpacas are raised. We used standardized pitfall traps baited with alpaca or cow dung a

Over the last few decades, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) has become a growing public health problem in Europe. The tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a zoonotic virus that affects the central nervous system (CNS). TBEV has been detected in 27 European countries, and the rise in TBE cases is mainly due to environmental and ecological factors, and factors that increase the risk of human exposure to infected ticks. The infection via the alimentary route is the second most common means of TBEV transmission to humans. Raw milk from infected goats, sheep, or cows has been identified as a source

Global change is expected to have complex effects on the distribution and transmission patterns of zoonotic parasites. Modelling habitat suitability for parasites with complex life cycles is essential to further our understanding of how disease systems respond to environmental changes, and to make spatial predictions of their future distributions. However, the limited availability of high quality occurrence data with high spatial resolution often constrains these investigations. Using 449 reliable occurrence records for Echinococcus multilocularis from across Europe published over the last 35

Dry lenticel rot, caused by the ascomycete Ramularia mali, is an emerging postharvest threat to apple production in European alpine regions. Despite its increasing prevalence, established control strategies remain unavailable. This study evaluated the efficacy of 16 fungicides, including succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors (SDHIs; Group 7), demethylation inhibitors (DMIs; Group 3), quinone outside inhibitors (QoIs; Group 11), and multi-site inhibitors, alongside two plant fortifiers. Furthermore, the potential of the ripening inhibitor 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) was tested after harvest. In v

Phylogeographic analyses provide key insights into how historical climate change, geographic barriers, and species-specific ecological traits shape evolutionary divergence. We investigated the phylogeography and evolutionary history of the two extant chough species, the red-billed chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax, n = 65) and the alpine chough (Pyrrhocorax graculus, n = 33), across most of their Palearctic range. Using concatenated mitochondrial DNA sequences, complemented by nuclear intron markers, we reconstructed and test lineage divergence and historical dispersal patterns. Haplotype networ

The European wildcat (Felis silvestris silvestris, EWC) is threatened by habitat fragmentation, hybridisation with domestic cats, and climate change, yet its distribution and genetic status in Italy remain poorly resolved. Here, we developed a species distribution model (SDM) based on 69 occurrence records compiled from published sources to identify suitable habitats across the Italian peninsula and characterised 23 newly collected occurrences from the Central-Southern Apennines, which included associated biological samples. The model identified forest and grassland cover and elevation as the

Traditional food products have been gaining importance over the last few years. The interest in such products is linked to the consumers' awareness of the importance of local cultures and low-processed food and of the environmental impact of food production systems. These products have been identified by the European Community as a way of preserving tradition and different cultures and as a way of enhancing local economies. Indeed, specific regulations have been set up for these reasons. Plaisentif is a traditional cheese that is produced in two valleys, named the Chisone and Susa valleys (Nor

Surveillance data collected in the period 2017-20 for Brucella spp. in wildlife of the Lombardy Region in northern Italy were used to describe the exposure of the wildlife species to Brucella spp. in wild boar (Sus scrofa), European brown hare (Lepus europaeus), fallow deer (Dama dama), red deer (Cervus elaphus), and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). Among the tested species, wild boar (n=6,440) showed the highest percentage of seropositive samples (5.9%). Notably, wild boars of perifluvial area of the Po River showed higher percentages of positivity than those of the pre-Alpine district. In add

Climate change is reshaping high-elevation forests in the European Alps, with species- and site-specific differences in the climate sensitivity of conifers being increasingly reported in treeline ecotones. However, a detailed understanding of how two dominant and co-occurring species, Larix decidua and Pinus cembra, respond to climate variability at inter- and intra-annual temporal scales and across treeline ecotones with different environmental settings is lacking. To address this gap, we analyzed chronologies of wood anatomical traits (earlywood lumen area, EWLA, and latewood cell wall thick

BACKGROUND: Autochthonous cattle breeds are an important source of genetic variation because they might carry alleles that enable them to adapt to local environment and food conditions. Original Braunvieh (OB) is a local cattle breed of Switzerland used for beef and milk production in alpine areas. Using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data of 49 key ancestors, we characterize genomic diversity, genomic inbreeding, and signatures of selection in Swiss OB cattle at nucleotide resolution.
RESULTS: We annotated 15,722,811 SNPs and 1,580,878 Indels including 10,738 and 2763 missense deleterious and

Groundwater resources in mountain areas are strategically important to maintain adequate water supply for domestic uses, farming, industrial activities, and energy production, also considering the expected growing demand due to ongoing climate changes. Within this framework, the objective of the study is to develop a regional approach, compliant with the European requirements of the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC and Groundwater Directive 2006/118/EC, that could support public agencies and water companies to efficiently manage and protect the available water resources in mountainous envi

Changes in alpine land management have led to the abandonment of high-altitude pastures in the European Alps. At the same time, climate warming facilitates forests to expand upwards, creating opportunities for carbon (C) sequestration. However, the amount of C that can be captured remains uncertain, as the effects on soil C are unclear and knowledge about forest growth at high altitudes is limited. We quantified biomass and soil C stocks in forest stands planted on subalpine pastures (elevation 1600-2100 m a.s.l.) in the Austrian Alps, compared them with those of adjacent pastures, assessed va

The European red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) has long been suspected to be a reservoir host of the agents of Lyme borreliosis, in particular B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.). However, very few data support this hypothesis. Hereafter, we investigated the infections with B. burgdorferi genospecies in road-killed red squirrels collected across France. We also characterized the diversity of hard tick species collected from a subsample of hosts. DNA of B. burgdorferi genospecies were detected and identified from PCR products in ear biopsies using reverse line blot hybridization. Variation in pre

Italian cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L.) is native to the eastern Mediterranean, an area characterised by hot, dry summers and mild winters. Over the centuries, however, the species has been introduced into more northerly regions, a long way from its native range. The current, generally warmer climatic conditions brought about by global warming have favoured its cultivation in even more northerly areas in the Alps and other European alpine regions. Given that not only temperature, but also light availability are limiting factors for the spread of cypress in these environments, it is importa

BACKGROUND: The cutaneous monostome trematode Collyriclum faba (Bremser in Schmalz, 1831) is a bird parasite with a hitherto unknown life cycle and highly focal occurrence across the Holarctic and Neotropic ecozones.
METHODS: Representative specimens of benthic organisms were sampled at multiple sites and dates within the known foci of C. faba occurrence in Slovakia. A combined approach involving detailed morphological examination and sequencing of two independent DNA loci was used for their analysis.
RESULTS: We elucidated the complete life cycle of C. faba, which we determined to include t

Calf diarrhea is one of the most important problems in calf rearing on dairy farms worldwide. Besides pathogens, several noninfectious management factors, especially management around birth, colostrum management, calf housing, feeding, and hygiene are important in the pathogenesis of diarrhea. To date, few data are available concerning calf rearing management on small and medium-sized dairy farms that are typical for Austria and the alpine region. Consequently, the objectives of this case-control study were to evaluate routine calf management practices on Austrian dairy farms and to examine di

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Repeated hybridization and/or polyploidization confound classification and phylogenetic inference, and multiple colonizations at different time scales complicate biogeographical reconstructions. This study investigates whether such processes can explain long-term controversies in Anthoxanthum, and in particular its debated relationship to the genus Hierochloë, the evolution of its conspicuously diverse floral morphology, and the origins of its strikingly disjunct occurrences. A hypothesis for recurrent polyploid formation is proposed.
METHODS: Three plastid (trnH-psbA, tr

AbstractResistance to B-cell-targeted therapies in immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) has been linked to persistence of autoantibody-producing CD38+ long-lived plasma cells. CD38 antibody daratumumab has been proposed as a potential therapy for ITP. This multicenter, open-label, phase 2 study evaluated safety and efficacy of daratumumab in 21 patients with previously treated ITP. Following a safety run-in, 2 dosing cohorts received 8 and 10 subcutaneous injections of 1800 mg daratumumab weekly, respectively. Primary end points were safety and response (2 consecutive platelet counts ≥50 × 109/L at w

Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) remains the most common primary glomerulonephritis globally. Advances in mucosal immunology have illuminated the role of dysregulated B cell activity, galactose-deficient IgA1 (Gd-IgA1) and Gd-IgA1-specific antibody formation in driving disease pathogenesis. Therapeutic targeting of the mucosal immune system and, more specifically, B cell survival and differentiation pathways have entered late-stage development, offering a mechanistically guided approach to disease modification. Targeting of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue of the terminal ileum, B cell ac
