Disability and the Complexity of Choice in the Ethics of Abortion and Voluntary Euthanasia.

In the polarized debates about abortion and voluntary euthanasia, disability advocates, who normally align with left-wing social forces, have tended to side with conservative and religious voices in expressing concerns about the impact of technological and sociopolitical developments on disabled futures. This paper draws on the social model of disability and the virtue ethics tradition to explain the alignment between the religious and disability perspectives, and the theory of transformative choice to highlight the limits and biases of the pro-choice logic. Yet, it also recognizes the inheren

Euthanasia of patients with the chronic renal failure.

This study deals with frequency and form of euthanasia in dialysis patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H) within the period from 2000 to 2006. Of total number of 2700 patients on dialysis we examined n = 753 of them. Examinees with the Balkan Endemic Nephropathy (BEN) (n = 348) were in the first group, and the Control group was formed of patients with other diseases (n = 405). In this study the following methods were used: adapted Questionnaire from the Renal Registry of B&H, Beck's Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Hamilton's Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and Mini-M

Ethical problems in the management of some severely handicapped children.

This paper examines some of the arguments advanced and acted upon by doctors concerned in decisions about whether severely handicapped patients should live or die. It criticises the view that 'selective treatment' is morally preferable to infanticide and shows how the standard arguments advanced for this preference fail to sustain it. It argues that the self-deception, which is sometimes cited as a sign of humanity in these cases, and which is implicit in the term 'selective treatment' is more dangerous than is the remote chance of brutalisation which is often cited as the danger of active eut

Acts, omissions, intentions and motives: a philosophical examination of the moral distinction between killing and letting die.

Health care professionals frequently justify moral decisions by appealing to the acts and omissions distinction and the principle of double effect. These principles are often quoted and criticised in the nursing literature, particularly in relation to active and passive euthanasia. Authors are, however, inclined to acknowledge the fact that they are a philosophical minefield, but fall short of providing a substantial critical analysis. Those who uphold the acts and omissions distinction claim that we are morally less responsible for our omissions than for our acts. The principle of double effe

Attitudes towards assisted suicide and euthanasia among care-dependent older adults (50+) in Austria: the role of socio-demographics, religiosity, physical illness, psychological distress, and social isolation.

BACKGROUND: Care-dependency constitutes an important issue with regard to the approval of end-of-life decisions, yet attitudes towards assisted suicide and euthanasia are understudied among care-dependent older adults. We assessed attitudes towards assisted suicide and euthanasia and tested empirical correlates, including socio-demographics, religiosity, physical illness, psychological distress and social isolation. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional survey among older care allowance recipients (50+) in private households in Austria was conducted in 2016. In computer-assisted personal inte

Physician-assisted dying: theory and reality.

...[T]here appears to be a conflation of physician-assisted suicide (the doctor makes the means of suicide available by, for example, writing a prescription for barbiturates) with active euthanasia (the doctor actively intervenes to kill the patient). I believe that these two entities are quite distinct in terms of several factors: they require very different roles for the physician, they involve distinct and disparate power relationships between physician and patient, and they would likely have a substantially different impact on the ethos of the medical profession. Thus, I would argue that i

Physiologic, Behavioral, and Histologic Responses to Various Euthanasia Methods in C57BL/6NTac Male Mice.

Rodent euthanasia using exposure to increasing concentrations of CO2 has come under scrutiny due to concerns of potential pain during the euthanasia process. Alternatives to CO2, such as isoflurane and barbiturates, have been proposed as more humane methods of euthanasia. In this study, we examined 3 commonly used euthanasia methods in mice: intraperitoneal injection of pentobarbital-phenytoin solution, CO2 inhalation, and isoflurane anesthesia followed by CO2 inhalation. We hypothesized that pentobarbital-phenytoin euthanasia would cause fewer alterations in cardiovascular response, result in

The Influence of Euthanasia Methods on Rat Liver Metabolism.

An important consideration in any terminal experiment is the method for euthanizing animals. Although the prime consideration is that the method is humane, some methods can have a dramatic impact on experimental outcomes. To determine the optimal method of euthanasia in metabolic experiments, a physical method (decapitation), two asphyxiation methods (CO2 and O2/CO2), and anesthetic (isoflurane) exposure followed by exsanguination were compared for their effects on liver metabolism. Changes in metabolism were monitored by following the activities of several key metabolic enzymes that are known

Can doctors lawfully kill competent patients who want to die?

This article explores the case of Nicklinson v Ministry of Justice (2012), in which a man with locked-in syndrome sought leave to challenge the current law concerning euthanasia. This is a preliminary hearing outlining the legal arguments being brought to trial; however, the article suggests that the significance of this case is likely to be considerable. It will require the English courts to consider the application of the doctrine of necessity and the application of the Human Rights Act in the context of active euthanasia by clinicians, rather than simply assisted suicide.

Attitudes of medical students, housestaff, and faculty physicians toward euthanasia and termination of life-sustaining treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Medical decisions concerning the prolongation of life, the right to die, and euthanasia are among the most extensively discussed decisions within medicine and law today. The responses of 360 physicians, housestaff, and medical students to a questionnaire were analyzed to identify attitudes toward these issues. DESIGN: Case vignettes were utilized to simulate the clinical context within which to survey decisions regarding whether or not to allow and assist patients requesting to die. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The majority of respondents (76%) consider withholding and withdraw

Phases in the decision to request euthanasia and brain structures involved.

INTRODUCTION: Euthanasia laws do not mention as an obstacle brain diseases other than dementia that damage circuits involved in decision-making. DEVELOPMENT: Narrative review of the stages of the decision to request euthanasia and the brain areas involved. The amygdala, the cingulate and insular cortex, and different parts of the prefrontal lobes are activated during decisions with similarities to that of requesting euthanasia. CONCLUSIONS: When an injury or malfunction of any of the structures involved in making decisions is known, a specific evaluation should be made of the influence it ma

Pentobarbital overdose: A case of contract killing.

Suicides by pentobarbital overdose have increased since about 2012, which appear to be influenced by technical information on active euthanasia that has spread over the Internet. We encountered a pentobarbital poisoning case of a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. A caregiver found the patient unconscious immediately after two visitors left the room. The patient was immediately transferred to the emergency hospital but eventually declared dead. A fatal concentration of pentobarbital was detected in peripheral blood samples collected in the emergency hospital and during autopsy (53.8 μ

Euthanasia in Italy: A Comparative Analysis in the European Context.

BACKGROUND: The term "euthanasia" refers to medical procedures involving the direct administration of a lethal drug to a patient who requests it and meets specific legal and medical criteria. The legal and ethical debate surrounding euthanasia and assisted suicide remains a highly controversial issue across Europe, with significant variations in national legislation. METHODS: This study provides a comparative analysis of the Italian legal framework on euthanasia and assisted suicide in relation to European regulations. Italy maintains one of the most restrictive legal stances, categorizing eu

Neonatal euthanasia.

Despite advances in the care of infants, there remain many newborns whose medical conditions are incompatible with sustained life. At times, healthcare providers and parents may agree that prolonging life is not an appropriate goal of care, and they may redirect treatment to alleviate suffering. While pediatric palliative treatment protocols are gaining greater acceptance, there remain some children whose suffering is unrelenting despite maximal efforts. Due to the realization that some infants suffer unbearably (ie, the burdens of suffering outweigh the benefits of life), the Dutch have devel
