[Trends in the agents used for euthanasia and the relationship with the number of notifications].

OBJECTIVE: To provide insight into the relationship between the drugs used for euthanasia and its notification. DESIGN: Retrospective and descriptive. METHODS: By comparing the drugs used for euthanasia according to different components of studies carried out in 1990, 1995 and 2000, insight was obtained into the drugs used in all cases of euthanasia satisfying the definition thereof (death-certificate studies), those cases of euthanasia that, in addition, were defined as such by the physician (physician interviews), and the cases of euthanasia that, in addition, had been reported (reported c

Dutch Protocols for Deliberately Ending the Life of Newborns: A Defence.

The Groningen Protocol, introduced in the Netherlands in 2005 and accompanied by revised guidelines published in a report commissioned by the Royal Dutch Medical Association in 2014, specifies conditions under which the lives of severely ill newborns may be deliberately ended. Its publication came four years after the Netherlands became the first nation to legalize the voluntary active euthanasia of adults, and the Netherlands remains the only country to offer a pathway to protecting physicians who might engage in deliberately ending the life of a newborn (DELN). In this paper, I offer two lin

Legal and ethical implications of defining an optimum means of achieving unconsciousness in assisted dying.

A decision by a society to sanction assisted dying in any form should logically go hand-in-hand with defining the acceptable method(s). Assisted dying is legal in several countries and we have reviewed the methods commonly used, contrasting these with an analysis of capital punishment in the USA. We expected that, since a common humane aim is to achieve unconsciousness at the point of death, which then occurs rapidly without pain or distress, there might be a single technique being used. However, the considerable heterogeneity in methods suggests that an optimum method of achieving unconscious

Killing by organ procurement: brain-based death and legal fictions.

The dead donor rule (DDR) governs procuring life-prolonging organs. They should be taken only from deceased donors. Miller and Truog have proposed abandoning the rule when patients have decided to forgo life-sustaining treatment and have consented to procurement. Organs could then be procured from living patients, thus killing them by organ procurement. This proposal warrants careful examination. They convincingly argue that current brain or circulatory death pronouncement misidentifies the biologically dead. After arguing convincingly that physicians already cause death by withdrawing treatme

[Death due to or despite the doctor].

In the last week of life, the extent and kind of medical practice differ both in intention and in the degree of orientation on the outcome. Patients tend to put long-term prescriptions aside or ask for symptom-relieving medication and sometimes for palliative sedation, euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide. Competent physicians are able to offer or withhold treatment. In case of unconsciousness or severe cognitive impairment, proxies may ask for medical relief of disturbing symptoms. Medical practice is subject to the Dutch Medical Treatment Act (1995). At the start of the specific Dutch la

Dementia, End of Life, and Euthanasia: A Survey Among Dementia Specialists Organized by the Belgian Dementia Council.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care and Advance Care Planning (ACP) are increasingly recommended for an optimal management of late-stage dementia. In Belgium, euthanasia has been decriminalized in 2002 for patients who are "mentally competent" (interpreted as non-demented). It has been suggested that advance directives for euthanasia (ADE) should be made possible for dementia patients. OBJECTIVE: This study presents the results of an internet survey among Belgian dementia specialists. METHODS: In 2013, the Belgian Dementia Council (BeDeCo) organized a debate on end of life decisions in dementia. Par

Euthanasia requests in a Canadian psychiatric emergency room: A case series: Part 1 of the McGill University euthanasia in psychiatry case series.

Euthanasia was decriminalized in Quebec in December 2015, and Canada-wide in June 2016. Both the Provincial and Federal legislation have limited the right to medical assistance in dying (MAID) to end-of-life cases; which makes MAID inaccessible to most patients solely suffering from psychiatric illness. While some end-stage anorexia nervosa or elderly patients may meet the end-of-life criterion because of their medical comorbidities or their age (Kelly et al., 2003), repeated suicide attempts or psychotic disorganization would not qualify since they would not be seen as elements of an illness

Euthanasia in Italy: A Comparative Analysis in the European Context.

BACKGROUND: The term "euthanasia" refers to medical procedures involving the direct administration of a lethal drug to a patient who requests it and meets specific legal and medical criteria. The legal and ethical debate surrounding euthanasia and assisted suicide remains a highly controversial issue across Europe, with significant variations in national legislation. METHODS: This study provides a comparative analysis of the Italian legal framework on euthanasia and assisted suicide in relation to European regulations. Italy maintains one of the most restrictive legal stances, categorizing eu

Voluntary assisted dying in Queensland: doctors' perceptions of its first year of operation.

OBJECTIVE: Voluntary assisted dying (VAD) became legal in Queensland in January 2023. This research examines the perceptions of doctors who have no in-principle objection to VAD, about the first year of VAD operation. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 27 doctors 1 year after VAD had been in operation. RESULTS: Three themes were developed: VAD is largely accepted as an end-of-life option and there is a collaborative approach with palliative care; VAD is being delivered as a public medical service, providing high-quality, timely access; and despite provision as a public m

The limitations of the Dutch concept of euthanasia.

Why has the law on euthanasia in the Netherlands caused such an upheaval both at home and abroad? In this paper I explore some bioethical issues in the decriminalisation of euthanasia in the Netherlands. The regulatory role of legal and state institutions in the process of decision-making by patients, physicians and other people concerned plays a central role in these discussions. I argue, first, that the limited scope of the Dutch legislation on euthanasia cannot be a solution to end-of-life issues in general, and, second, that it is inadequate as a model for dealing with problems related to

Attitudes of medical students, housestaff, and faculty physicians toward euthanasia and termination of life-sustaining treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Medical decisions concerning the prolongation of life, the right to die, and euthanasia are among the most extensively discussed decisions within medicine and law today. The responses of 360 physicians, housestaff, and medical students to a questionnaire were analyzed to identify attitudes toward these issues. DESIGN: Case vignettes were utilized to simulate the clinical context within which to survey decisions regarding whether or not to allow and assist patients requesting to die. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The majority of respondents (76%) consider withholding and withdraw

Physician-assisted dying: theory and reality.

...[T]here appears to be a conflation of physician-assisted suicide (the doctor makes the means of suicide available by, for example, writing a prescription for barbiturates) with active euthanasia (the doctor actively intervenes to kill the patient). I believe that these two entities are quite distinct in terms of several factors: they require very different roles for the physician, they involve distinct and disparate power relationships between physician and patient, and they would likely have a substantially different impact on the ethos of the medical profession. Thus, I would argue that i

Euthanasia and advance directives in Huntington's disease: qualitative analysis of interviews with patients.

BACKGROUND: In the literature there are few reports on euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide (PAS) or other matters concerning the end-of-life in patients with Huntington's disease (HD), although clinical experience suggests these issues do arise. OBJECTIVE: To obtain in-depth information about patients' thoughts on and attitudes to euthanasia, PAS and the use of advance directives in HD. To assess the difficulties patients encounter when thinking about end-of-life wishes. METHODS: Semi-structured in-depth interviews with 14 unselected HD patients from our out-patient clinic based on a to

Transmucosal pentobarbital is a successful euthanasia method in pond slider turtles (Trachemys scripta).

OBJECTIVE: To determine the ability of transmucosal euthanasia solution to induce euthanasia in pond slider turtles (Trachemys scripta). ANIMALS: 16 pond slider turtles (T. scripta). PROCEDURES: Pentobarbital 100 mg/kg was delivered through esophageal gavage (n = 8) or cloacal administration (8). The presence of voluntary movement, heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), palpebral reflex, corneal reflex, and response to noxious stimuli were recorded until death, confirmed via the absence of reflexes, movement, heartbeat, and absence of cardiac electrical activity. RESULTS: No signs of irrit

Reclaiming our moral tradition. Catholic teaching calls us to accept the limits of medical technology.

The success of science and medical technology has led to medical brinkmanship, pushing aggressive treatment as far as it can go. But medicine lacks the precision necessary for such brinkmanship to succeed, and the resulting cycle of expectation and disappointment in technology has, in part, led to an increasing acceptance of euthanasia and assisted suicide, linked closely with advocacy for patient autonomy. At the opposite extreme lies medical vitalism, which refers to attempts to preserve the patient's life in and of itself without any significant hope for recovery. The Catholic moral traditi

Voluntary exercise improves voiding function and bladder hyperalgesia in an animal model of stress-induced visceral hypersensitivity: A multidisciplinary approach to the study of urologic chronic pelvic pain syndrome research network study.

OBJECTIVE: The underlying mechanism of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is not well understood and evaluation of current therapeutic interventions has not identified any generally effective treatments. Physical activity has shown beneficial effects on individuals suffering from chronic pain. Anxiety-prone rats exposed to water avoidance stress (WAS) develop urinary frequency and lower bladder sensory thresholds with high face and construct validity for the study of IC/BPS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of chronic voluntary exercise on urinary frequency, voi
