Osteology and Radiological Anatomy of the Thoracic Limbs of Temminck's Ground Pangolin (Smutsia temminckii).

Temminck's ground pangolin is the only pangolin present in South Africa. It is a myrmecophagous mammal with a bipedal gait. The thoracic limbs are used to break open ant nests, dig for food, and expand previously occupied burrows. This study describes the osteology and radiological anatomy of the thoracic limbs of this threatened species. Thoracic limbs from four Temminck's ground pangolins, which succumbed from electrocution or natural causes, were digitally radiographed in situ. The individual bones were then cleaned, described and digitally radiographed. The skeleton of the thoracic limbs r

Chondrosarcoma in a captive giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla).

The development of neoplasms in giant anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is poorly documented, with most studies focused on non-neoplastic changes. This report describes a case of chondrosarcoma in a 15-year-old male captive giant anteater that presented with lameness for approximately 6 months, locomotion difficulties and swelling of the left thoracic limb. After review of a radiograph, humane euthanasia was decided due to the poor prognosis and quality of life. At necropsy, a 17 × 20 × 13 cm mass was seen to project from the humeroradioulnar joint of the left thoracic limb. The mass was whi

Electrocardiographic parameters of chemically immobilized giant anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla).

The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is a vulnerable species that is threatened mostly due to anthropogenic pressure. The anteater is a highly specialized insectivore, challenging the species' ex situ maintenance and conservation efforts. Several dietary-associated health issues have been reported in captive anteaters, including heart conditions such as dilated cardiomyopathy. On the other hand, cardiopathy is mainly diagnosed only on necropsy, and lack of clinical reference is one of the constraints. This work describes electrocardiographic parameters in twelve zoo-kept giant anteater

Disparity of turbinal bones in placental mammals.

Turbinals are key bony elements of the mammalian nasal cavity, involved in heat and moisture conservation as well as olfaction. While turbinals are well known in some groups, their diversity is poorly understood at the scale of placental mammals, which span 21 orders. Here, we investigated the turbinal bones and associated lamellae for one representative of each extant order of placental mammals. We segmented and isolated each independent turbinal and lamella and found an important diversity of variation in the number of turbinals, as well as their size, and shape. We found that the turbinal c

The Late Cretaceous eutherian Zalambdalestes reveals unique axis and complex evolution of the mammalian neck.

The typical mammalian neck consisting of seven cervical vertebrae (C1-C7) was established by the Late Permian in the cynodont forerunners of modern mammals. This structure is precisely adapted to facilitate movements of the head during feeding, locomotion, predator evasion, and social interactions. Eutheria, the clade including crown placentals, has a fossil record extending back more than 125 million years revealing significant morphological diversification in the Mesozoic. Yet very little is known concerning the early evolution of eutherian cervical morphology and its functional adaptations.

Middle ear innovation in Early Cretaceous eutherian mammals.

The middle ear ossicles in modern mammals are repurposed from postdentary bones in non-mammalian cynodonts. Recent discoveries by palaeontological and embryonic studies have developed different models for the middle ear evolution in mammaliaforms. However, little is known about the evolutionary scenario of the middle ear in early therians. Here we report a detached middle ear preserved in a new eutherian mammal from the Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota. The well-preserved articulation of the malleus and incus suggest that the saddle-shaped incudomallear joint is a major apomorphy of Early Cretaceo

First isolation and genotyping of Toxoplasma gondii in a free-living giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) revealed a unique non-archetypal genotype.

The protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii can infect virtually all warm-blooded animals worldwide but little is known of its infection in the endangered giant anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla). The present study found antibodies to T. gondii in 13 of 23 free-living M. tridactyla from the northwest region of São Paulo state, Brazil, by the Modified Agglutination Test (MAT, cut-off titer 1:25). Unfrozen tissues of seven M. tridactyla were bioassayed in mice and viable T. gondii (strain designated TgMytrBrSP1) isolated from one seropositive giant anteater. To our knowledge, this is a new host re

The Marine Mammal Class II Major Histocompatibility Complex Organization.

Sirenians share with cetaceans and pinnipeds several convergent traits selected for the aquatic lifestyle. Living in water poses new challenges not only for locomotion and feeding but also for combating new pathogens, which may render the immune system one of the best tools aquatic mammals have for dealing with aquatic microbial threats. So far, only cetaceans have had their class II Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) organization characterized, despite the importance of MHC genes for adaptive immune responses. This study aims to characterize the organization of the marine mammal class II

The evolutionary history of testicular externalization and the origin of the scrotum.

This paper re-examines the evolution of the scrotum and testicular descent in the context of the recent phylogeny of mammals. The adaptive significance of testicular descent and scrotality is briefly discussed. We mapped four character states reflecting the position of testes and presence of scrotum onto recent mammalian phylogeny. Our results are interpreted as follows: as to the presence of testicondy in Monotremata and most of Atlantogenata, which represent the basal group of all eutherians, we argue that primary testicondy represents a plesiomorphic condition for Eutheria as well as for al

Molecular detection and characterization of filarioid nematodes in wild armadillos and anteaters from Central-Western Brazil.

Armadillos and anteaters usually interact with a wide range of ectoparasites and associated pathogens. Combined with their unique physiological and ecological characteristics, these interactions make them potential hosts for a diverse range of vector-borne agents (VBA). Despite this, relatively few studies have investigated the occurrence of VBA in mammals of the superorder Xenarthra in Brazil. The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence and phylogenetic assessment of filarioid nematodes in wild armadillos and anteaters sampled in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Central-Western Braz

Flexible conservatism in the skull modularity of convergently evolved myrmecophagous placental mammals.

BACKGROUND: The skull of placental mammals constitutes one of the best studied systems for phenotypic modularity. Several studies have found strong evidence for the conserved presence of two- and six-module architectures, while the strength of trait correlations (integration) has been associated with major developmental processes such as somatic growth, muscle-bone interactions, and tooth eruption. Among placentals, ant- and termite-eating (myrmecophagy) represents an exemplar case of dietary convergence, accompanied by the selection of several cranial morphofunctional traits such as rostrum e

SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT OF CLINICAL ORTHOPOXVIRUS INFECTION IN A GIANT ANTEATER (MYRMECOPHAGA TRIDACTYLA).

An anorexic 5-yr-old female giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) developed multifocal ulcerative and vesicular lesions affecting the rostrum, oral cavity, and tongue. Disseminated skin lesions were also found on the body, affecting the feet, flanks, and genital area. Polymerase chain reaction confirmed a systemic viremic orthopoxvirus infection. Cowpox virus was considered to be the only likely etiological agent. Intensive supportive treatment, including daily fluid therapy, force-feeding, and anti-inflammatory administration achieved a successful outcome after 3 wk. To the authors' knowle

United by conflict: Convergent signatures of parental conflict in angiosperms and placental mammals.

Endosperm in angiosperms and placenta in eutherians are convergent innovations for efficient embryonic nutrient transfer. Despite advantages, this reproductive strategy incurs metabolic costs that maternal parents disproportionately shoulder, leading to potential inter-parental conflict over optimal offspring investment. Genomic imprinting-parent-of-origin-biased gene expression-is fundamental for endosperm and placenta development and has convergently evolved in angiosperms and mammals, in part, to resolve parental conflict. Here, we review the mechanisms of genomic imprinting in these taxa.

Progressive Exaptation of Endogenous Retroviruses in Placental Evolution in Cattle.

Viviparity is made possible by the placenta, a structure acquired relatively recently in the evolutionary history of eutherian mammals. Compared to oviparity, it increases the survival rate of the fetus, owing to the eutherian placenta. Questions such as "How was the placenta acquired?" and "Why is there diversity in placental morphology among mammalian species?" remain largely unsolved. Our present understanding of the molecules regulating placental development remains unclear, owing in no small part to the persistent obscurity surrounding the molecular mechanisms underlying placental acquisi

Genome sequence analysis of Malayan pangolin (Manis javanica) forensic samples reveals the presence of Paraburkholderia fungorum sequences.

BACKGROUND: The Malayan pangolin (Manis javanica) is a placental mammal and is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Most previous attempts to breed pangolins in captivity have met with little success because of dietary issues, infections, and other complications, although a previous study reported breeding pangolins in captivity to the third generation. In our previous pangolin genome sequencing data analysis, we obtained a considerable amount of bacterial DNA from a pregnant female Malayan pangolin (named "UM3"), which was likely infected by Paraburkhold

Cortical activity emerges in region-specific patterns during early brain development.

The development of precise neural circuits in the brain requires spontaneous patterns of neural activity prior to functional maturation. In the rodent cerebral cortex, patchwork and wave patterns of activity develop in somatosensory and visual regions, respectively, and are present at birth. However, whether such activity patterns occur in noneutherian mammals, as well as when and how they arise during development, remain open questions relevant for understanding brain formation in health and disease. Since the onset of patterned cortical activity is challenging to study prenatally in eutheria

Physiological responses to hypoxia are constrained by environmental temperature in heterothermic tenrecs.

Malagasy tenrecs are placental hibernating mammals that seal the entrances to their burrows and hibernate either singly or in groups for 8-9 months, which is likely to create a hypoxic and hypercapnic burrow environment. Therefore, we hypothesized that tenrecs are tolerant to environmental hypoxia and hypercapnia. Many hypoxia- and hypercapnia-tolerant fossorial mammals respond to hypoxia by decreasing metabolic rate and thermogenesis, and have blunted ventilatory responses to both environmental hypoxia and hypercapnia. However, tenrecs exhibit extreme metabolic and thermoregulatory plasticity

Lack of Evidence for Gene-Level Convergence Linked to Evolutionary Shifts in Torpor Among Placental Mammals.

Torpor is a key survival strategy that many avian and mammalian lineages evolved in response to challenging environmental conditions. Whether the independent evolution of torpor in different lineages involved changes in the same genes remains poorly understood. Here, we performed comparative screens across 190 placental mammal genomes to comprehensively examine associations between loss, positive selection, and evolutionary rate shifts in individual protein-coding genes and evolutionary shifts in torpor use. We find that gene-torpor associations are highly clade-specific, with no gene being ab

The evolutionary loss of the Eh1 motif in FoxE1 in the lineage of placental mammals.

Forkhead box E1 (FoxE1) protein is a transcriptional regulator known to play a major role in the development of the thyroid gland. By performing sequence alignments, we detected a deletion in FoxE1, which occurred in the evolution of mammals, near the point of divergence of placental mammals. This deletion led to the loss of the majority of the Eh1 motif, which was important for interactions with transcriptional corepressors. To investigate a potential mechanism for this deletion, we analyzed replication through the deletion area in mammalian cells with two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, and

The emergence and diversification of the DUX gene family across placental mammals.

The DUX gene family encodes transcription factors with paired homeodomains. It has critical roles in embryogenesis and disease, including facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) and cancer. This study conducts a comparative analysis of the DUX gene family-DUXA, DUXB (including DUXBL), and DUXC (including DUX4 and Dux)-across placental mammals, highlighting their structural diversity within macrosatellite repeat contexts. Using long-read genomes, we explore gene distribution, array patterns, and phylogenetic relationships in various vertebrate species. Our analysis reveals that DUXA and D
