Brainstem auditory evoked potentials and somatosensory evoked potentials in cerebral malaria--a prognostic significance.

OBJECTIVE: To study the changes in brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) in cerebral malaria and to see their prognostic significance. METHODS: BAEPs and right median nerve SSEPs were performed in 25 adult patients of strictly defined cerebral malaria in acute stage in a semi-dark, sound proof chamber on four channel computerized multi-basis OTE-Biomedica machine in department of neurology, SP Medical College, Bikaner. RESULTS: The abnormalities of BAEPs were delayed peak latency of wave III in 13/25 (52%) and wave V in 20/25 (80%) patients

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in enteric encephalopathy (EE).

BAEPs and SEPs were studied in 25 patients of enteric encephalopathy in acute phase and the results were compared with 25 healthy control persons. In the study the important observations of BAEPs were delayed peak latency of wave III, wave V and delayed ILP I-V, and of SEPs was prolonged peak latency of N20. The electrophysiological evidence suggests metabolic cause for the coma and the SEP changes were similar to those observed in cerebral malaria reported earlier in this laboratory.

Magnetic fields normalize visual evoked potentials and brainstem auditory evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis.

The present communication concerns a 46 year old woman with a 10 year history of chronic progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) in whom external application of magnetic fields (MF) (7.5 picoTesla; 5 Hz) during a period of remission resulted in a rapid and dramatic improvement in symptoms including vision, cerebellar symptomatology (ataxia and dysarthria), mood, sleep, bowel and bladder functions as well as fatigue. Improvement in the patient's symptoms was associated with normalization of the pretreatment latencies of the visual evoked potentials and brainstem auditory evoked potential responses

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials: review.

BACKGROUND: Disorders of balance often pose a diagnostic conundrum for clinicians, and a multitude of investigations have emerged over the years. Vestibular evoked myogenic potential testing is a diagnostic tool which can be used to assess vestibular function. Over recent years, extensive study has begun to establish a broader clinical role for vestibular evoked myogenic potential testing. OBJECTIVES: To provide an overview of vestibular evoked myogenic potential testing, and to present the evidence for its clinical application. REVIEW TYPE: Structured literature search according to evidence-

[Trigeminal evoked potentials in migraine].

Trigeminal evoked potentials (TEP) were studied in 19 patients with migraine without aura. Significant shortening of latent periods of early and late TEP components was observed during stimulation on the side of headache as compared with the same indices during stimulation on nonalgesic side. Hyperreactivity of trigeminal vascular system in patients with migraine without aura during the period between the attacks is discussed. Asymmetry of laten TEP periods may determine the preferential side of headache, on the one hand, and may reflect the changes in trigeminal system following the repeated

Visual evoked potentials during hyperthermia.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to evaluate the effect of hyperthermia (HT) on central conduction pathways by alterations in pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEPs) in normal and demyelinated optic nerves. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied PVEP peak latency and amplitudes in 10 normal subjects and six patients with demyelinating optic neuropathy before and during HT. RESULTS: In normal subjects, a mean rise in temperature of 2.5 degrees C resulted in a decrease in the second positive peak (P2) latency of 6.1 ms (p < 0.0001) and a slight decline in P2 amplitude of 1.16 muV (p < 0.009). These results w

Multimodality evoked potentials in aortoarteritis.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) have been used to detect early and even asymptomatic brain ischemia. There is a need to detect subclinical brain and/or spinal cord ischemia in patients with aortoarteritis so that ischemic deficits can be prevented by early intervention. We studied multimodality (Visual evoked potentials--VEPs, Somatosensory evoked potentials--SEPs and BAEPs) evoked potentials (EPs) in 10 neurologically asymptomatic subjects with aortoarteritis. EP latencies were normal in all the patients studied. The possible value of EP latencies in detection of early brain and/

Pudendal cortical somatosensory evoked potentials.

To determine normal reference latencies pudendal cortical somatosensory evoked potentials were evaluated in 20 healthy volunteers. The dorsal nerve of the penis or clitoris was stimulated electrically and the cortical response was recorded from the CZ-2 point (2 cm. behind the central vertex). Reproducible responses were obtained and reference values were established.

Somatosensory evoked potentials in syringomyelia.

The two types of upper limb somatosensory evoked potential abnormality observed in nine patients with syringomyelia were reduced amplitude or absent cervical potentials and an abnormal central conduction time. Although this pattern of abnormalities resembles that observed in other intrinsic spinal cord lesions, it differs from peripheral nerve diseases and cervical radiculopathy in which the central conduction time is normal.

Evoked potentials in experimental myelopathy.

Evoked potentials recorded from the cerebral cortex and spinal cord secondary to peripheral stimulation are reversibly reduced in amplitude by both pathologic distraction and pathologic flexion of the vertebral column. While the cerebral responses are lost within two minutes after complete occlusion of the ascending aorta, the responses recorded from the spinal cord persist without change for approximately ten minutes and then gradually disappear. During the first few minutes after aortic occlusion, changes produced by spinal distraction and spinal flexion are indistinguishable from those prod

Studies on sacral-evoked potentials.

The bulbocavernosus reflex may be evoked electrically with a latency of approximately 35 msec. in normal male subjects. We have studied the sacral-evoked response in 116 individuals, 10 of whom were normal controls. For each study ipsilateral and contralateral responses were obtained from each side, resulting in 4 latency values. We herein describe the abnormalities in 54 patients with a variety of documented neurologic lesions. Our investigation reveals that the bulbocavernosus reflex has the characteristics of a cutaneous polysynaptic bilateral flexor response. The use of bilateral stimulati

[Acoustic evoked potentials in presbycusis].

Investigations concerning presbyacusis indicate that the ageing process of the hearing organ is mostly influenced by changes in the sensory-neural pathways. Psychoacoustic measurements give only reduced information on the peripheral and central part of the hearing organ. To verify changes of transport processes in the hearing organ caused by age we examined different evoked potentials. Occurrence probability of positive wave-complexes, input-output functions of amplitude and latency and particular changes in response pattern are analyzed. The results are controled by a signal-analyzer-system u

Evoked potentials in mitochondrial disorders.

Twenty-eight adult patients with mitochondrial disease were evaluated with muitimodal evoked potentials (EPs) to assess a possible CNS involvement The patients were classified into five groups: encephalopathy (two cases), progressive external ophthalmoplegia (PEO; four cases), pure myopatby (15 cases), cardiomyopathy (five cases) and asymptomatic relatives (two cases). EPs showed differences between encephalopathy (all EP modalities affected) and PEO groups (all patients with at least one EP altered), with lesser degrees of affection in pure myopathy and cardiomyopathy groups. The asymptomatic

[Visual evoked potentials in pseudophakia].

Examinations of VEP were performed in 32 cases of pseudophakia (20 implants to the anterior, 12 to the posterior chamber). The impulses were light flashes and a reversible checkboard pattern. Normal records of VEP were obtained in 93 p.c. of cases with the use of a light flash and in 75 p.c. by applying a checkboard pattern. No correlation was found between the visual acuity and the VEP. The authors observed a shortening of the latency time of the N2 bend after implantation of the lens using the light flashes.

[Evoked potentials in comatose children].

Auditory and somatosensory EPS obtained after median nerve stimulation are an interesting approach for the central nervous system investigation. However, there are some problems of interpretation during the first year of life, related to the maturation of the nervous system. We studied 20 severely comatose children aged 8 months to 15 years, admitted in an intensive care unit. Most of them were intubated, mechanically ventilated and received high doses of barbiturates. Coma was related to severe head injury, meningitis, encephalitis, Reye syndrome, malignant hyperthermia, cerebral lymphoma. No

Evoked potentials in trigeminal neuralgia.

Trigeminal evoked potentials and sensory thresholds in response to maxillary gum stimulation were obtained in patients with a complaint of unilateral face pain. The patients and the volunteer, normal control groups had undergone no prior surgical or other procedures involving cranial or cervical structures. For statistical purposes, patient data were analyzed with respect to the diagnostic classification of classical trigeminal neuralgia, atypical trigeminal neuralgia, or other face pain states in which the pain extended beyond the trigeminal nerve distribution. Latencies of trigeminal evoked

Visual evoked potentials in alcoholics.

Visual evoked potentials were obtained in nineteen patients during the early phase of alcohol intoxication. Out of the thirty-eight responses recorded in the nineteen patients, 13% were found to be abnormal (5 responses). Repeated testing was done in all patients with abnormal responses at three to four week intervals following treatment with vitamins and balanced diets. In three patients the major positive peaks returned to normal after treatment.

Visual evoked potentials in neurosyphilis.

The visual evoked potential (VEP) to pattern reversal was recorded in 79 patients with neurosyphilis. Sixteen patients (20%) had abnormal VEP latencies with a predominance of pathological VEP values in the group of tabes dorsalis (50%) as compared to general paresis (18%) or meningovascular forms (13%). A comparison of the frequency of abnormal VEPs with that of other ophthalmological tests (visual acuity, visual field, central campimetry, pupillary reactions, dark adaptation, optic fundus) yielded no diagnostic superiority of VEP.
