[Auditory evoked potentials in children with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder].

The objective of the present study was to estimate peculiarities of the auditory brainstem evoked potentials (ABR), auditory steady-state responses (ASSR) and cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEP) in the children presenting with bilateral auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD). The study included 100 patients with bilateral ANSD diagnosed based on the positive response of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) and/or cochlear microphonic (CM) detection, while no synchronous neural activity was detected in the ABR test. Cochlear microphonic was the main clue for the ANSD diagnosing, because OA

Study of brain stem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEPs) and visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) in leprosy.

A study of brain stem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEPs) and visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) was done on 25 newly diagnosed patients with leprosy whose diagnosis was confirmed by skin biopsy. The results were compared with 25 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. In BAEPs the important observations were the prolonged latency of wave V in 13 (52%), delayed interpeak latency (IPL) of wave I-III in 5 (20%) cases, of wave III-V in 12/25 (40%), suggesting a conduction abnormality of the VIII cranial nerve in its peripheral part, in its nucleus and in its connection in the brain stem. In VEPs, a de

[Short latency somatosensory evoked potentials and brainstem auditory evoked potentials in patients with head trauma].

The SSEPs in 115 patients with head trauma were analysed by NT+ W value, da, db and b/a methods. The results revealed that the abnormal rates of the SSEPs were 94.8%. The pathological bases resulting in it were the direct and/or indirect lesion on the somatosensory pathway. The SSEPs recorded six months after the trauma indicated that the electric activities of neurons in some of the patients were still abnormal although they recovered well. The patients complicated with traumatic lesion of acoustic nerve, blood clots in external ear canal and pre-existing hearing loss had abnormal BAEPs that

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials and early somatosensory evoked potentials in neurointensively treated comatose children.

Forty-three comatose children treated by invasive neurointensive care were examined by brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs). The evoked potential (EP) results obtained were reviewed in conjunction with the clinical outcome. As a BAEP criterion, the V-I interpeak latency and, as an SEP criterion, the central conduction time (N20-N14 latency) were measured. A loss of BAEP and SEP components portended a poor prognosis. On the other hand, latency prolongations were seen in a third of patients who made a complete recovery. However, the SEP and BAE

Characterizing subcutaneous cortical auditory evoked potentials in mice.

Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABRs) are a reliably robust measure of auditory thresholds in the mammalian hearing system and can be used to determine deficits in the auditory periphery. However, because these measures are limited to the lower stages of the auditory pathway, they are insensitive to changes or deficits that occur in the thalamic and cortical regions. Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials (CAEPs), as longer latency responses, capture information from these regions. However they are less frequently used as a diagnostic tool, particularly in rodent models, due to their inherent varia

[The electrically evoked potentials of the auditory cortex].

The problems concerning the registration of late latency auditory responses to electric stimulation in the patients wearing cochlear implants are considered. The renewed interest to this class of evoked potentials is due to unexplained differences in the results of cochlear implantation in the patients with the similar audiological data, etiology, age and the history of deafness as well as cochlear implant surgery in children of first years of life and the extended possibilities for speech processor programming. It is maintained that the advantages of this method include the possibility to obj

Polarity stimulation effects on brainstem auditory evoked potentials.

UNLABELLED: Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials are considered exogenous potentials, that is, the responses obtained are highly dependent upon the characteristic of the stimulus used to evoke them. AIM: To investigate the influence of the click stimulus polarity in the study of Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) at different intensities, using insertion-canal earphones. TYPE OF STUDY: Clinical. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 33 individuals, aged between 18 and 28, with no auditory alteration were submitted to BERA testing, with click stimulus on the rarefaction, condensation and alternate

[Late auditory evoked potentials in subcortical cognitive deterioration].

Late auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) were recorded by the odd-ball method in 55 non-deteriorated parkinsonians (NP) and in 27 parkinsonians with cognitive deterioration (CDP), compared with 20 controls (C) and 24 patients with Alzheimer-type senile dementia (ATSD). The latency of P 300 was prolonged in the CDP and ATSD groups (410.72 +/- 24.45 and 433.62 +/- 38.30 respectively; P less than 0.001. The latency of N 100 was prolonged only in the CDP group (106.6 +/- 4.82; P less than 0.001). Late AEPs were also studied in 63 subjects with possible or confirmed disseminated sclerosis (DS) compar

Auditory evoked potentials in narcolepsy and sleep terrors.

Dysfunction of brainstem reticular activating centers has been suggested in some sleep disorders, including narcolepsy and sleep terrors. Previous studies have suggested normal brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) in narcolepsy and enhancement of long-latency auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) in sleep deprivation and conditions of pathological somnolence. Sleep terrors have not to date been studied neurophysiologically. We recorded early latency BAEPs and long-latency auditory ERPs in 8 patients with narcolepsy and 5 individuals with sleep terrors, and compared them to 10 normal

Augmentation of auditory evoked potentials in somatization disorder.

Sensory input regulation was examined in terms of augmenting/reducing of auditory evoked potentials in 10 patients with somatization disorder (8 males and 2 females) and 10 age- and sex-matched normal controls. The slope of P1-N1 amplitude change as a function of stimulus intensity was greater in patients compared with controls, suggesting an enhanced central nervous system response to sensory input. Taken together with previous findings of a failure to habituate to incoming stimuli in a similar group of patients, and evidence obtained in somatizers of both over-responding to background stimul

Brain-stem auditory-evoked potentials in spasmodic torticollis.

The pathophysiology of idiopathic spasmodic torticollis is uncertain. Cerebral, basal ganglia, brain-stem, and cervicomedullary lesions have been implicated. Some investigators have found evoked-potential abnormalities, while others have not. We recorded brain-stem auditory-evoked potentials in six patients with otherwise normal result of examinations and laboratory studies. Brain-stem auditory-evoked potentials were recorded from Cz-A1 and Cz-A2 with rarefaction clicks delivered at 11.1/s and 70 dB above sensory threshold with 40-dB contralateral masking. Analysis time was 10 ms, filter bandp

Measures of auditory evoked potentials during optokinetic stimulation.

In this investigation auditory brainstem responses (ABR) elicited by click stimuli were recorded before, during, and after optokinetic stimulation in subjects that were (N = 10) or were not (N = 10) prone to visually induced motion sickness. The latency of Wave I, and the I-III and I-V interwave intervals were measured. A significant increase in the I-III interwave interval occurred only during optokinetic stimulation. Neither the Wave I latency nor the interwave interval differed with respect to subject groups and this factor did not interact with any other variables. These results suggest th

[Brain stem auditory evoked potentials and chronic alcoholism].

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were obtained from 25 chronic alcoholic patients. The patients had been drinking heavily for an average of 15 years and a minimum of 5 years. All patients were totally abstinent for a minimum of 3 weeks. The morphology of waves were often altered. All presented prolonged I-III, III-V, inter-peak latencies (IPLs) and a loss of amplitude of wave V. The I-III, III-V and I-VIPLs were increased between 30 and 40 years, and III-V and I-VIPLs between 40 and 50 years. The incidence of abnormal BAEPs in patients with alcoholic epilepsy was not different fro

Auditory brain-stem evoked potentials in Bell's palsy.

In an attempt to assess objectively the integrity of the auditory pathways in patients suffering from Bell's palsy, an audiometric evaluation was performed and auditory brain-stem evoked potentials (ABEP) were obtained from 24 patients within the first week from the onset of facial weakness. Despite negative audiometric findings, significant ABEP abnormalities (greater than 2.5 SDs) were observed for 25% of the sample. In each case the ABEP deviation suggested prolonged brain-stem conduction time; for some patients the aberration was only apparent with an increased stimulus repetition rate. Th

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) in tobacco smokers.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were studied in 10 chronic male tobacco smokes (average age 26.55 years) with history of smoking 3 to 14 years to detect early subclinical impairments in auditory pathway. The values of BAEPs were compared with those of 28 age matched normal male non-smokers (control). The results revealed significant prolongation of latencies of wave I and III indicating that conductivity of sensory impulse along acoustic nerve and pons is affected in chronic smokers which may be attributed to adverse effect on myelination by nicotine and toluene present in tobacco

Auditory evoked potentials in vertebrobasilar transient ischemic attacks.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) are affected by stroke or migraine in the vertebrobasilar arterial system. Some studies have reported BAEP changes in vertebrobasilar transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), but others have shown no alterations. We recorded BAEPs in 35 patients with TIAs in the vertebrobasilar system who did not have a stroke, other neurologic disease or significant hearing loss. Thirty patients were recorded after resolution of symptoms, while five individuals still had some resolving signs or symptoms. TIA patients as a group had longer interpeak latencies, but I-III,

Auditory middle latency-evoked potentials during sleep apnea.

Auditory middle-latency evoked potentials (AMEP) were recorded in 10 subjects with predominantly central sleep apnea. AMEP were recorded during: waking; non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) sleep between apneic episodes; first half of apneas; and second half of apneas. Latencies of vertex positive peaks Po and Pa were determined, and the effect of the apnea phase on these latencies was evaluated. The latencies measured did not reveal chronic or acute functional abnormality of central auditory structures, which may result from or cause apneic episodes during non-REM sleep. The normalcy and stabilit
