Lower extremity motor evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation was performed on 25 patients with definite multiple sclerosis. Motor evoked potentials were recorded from the anterior tibial muscle. Central motor conduction time was calculated using the equation (F + M-1)/2 by stimulation of the common peroneal nerve. Motor evoked potentials were capable of detecting subclinical pyramidal tract lesions in multiple sclerosis. In patients with multiple sclerosis, the incidence of abnormality of motor and somatosensory evoked potentials was similar. Central motor conduction time was correlated with overall and pyramidal tract

Motor-evoked potentials of facial musculature in dogs.

Motor responses of limb musculature have been elicited by transcranial brain stimulation using electrical and magnetic stimulation. Recording from muscles innervated by cranial nerves has not previously been reported. A unilateral hemispheric craniotomy was performed in 24 dogs. An electric stimulus was delivered directly to the exposed motor cortex via surface electrodes. Evoked electromyographic responses to motor cortex stimulation were recorded from the contralateral orbicularis oculi and orbicularis oris muscles. Preliminary investigation into the use of magnetic stimulation of the motor

Motor-evoked potentials of tongue musculature in dogs.

Transcranial brain stimulation by either electrical or noninvasive magnetic stimulation has produced motor responses of limb musculature. However, recordings from muscles innervated by cranial nerves have not previously been reported. A right-sided craniotomy was performed in 18 dogs. An electric stimulus was delivered to the motor cortex via surface electrodes and evoked EMG responses were recorded from the tongue musculature to determine conduction time. Magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex yielded EMG latencies similar to those obtained by electrical direct cortical stimulation, thus de

Transcranial stimulation of the motor cortex to produce motor-evoked potentials.

Monitoring of the nervous system using evoked potentials is a developing tool. A new evoked potential, the motor-evoked potential (MEP), based on a traditional test, uses brain stimulation to monitor the motor system. The MEP complements the existing modalities, which are wholly sensory. The MEP can be prompted by direct stimulation of the motor cortex, but, in a more general way, by transcranial stimulation. Electric or magnetic means can be used. One electric system involves placement of an electrode on the scalp over the motor cortex, paired with a cathodal plate on the roof of the hard pal

Error related EEG potentials evoked by visuo-motor rotations.

Electroencephalographic (EEG) correlates of errors, known as error-related potentials (ErrPs), provide promising tools to investigate error processing in the brain and to detect and correct errors induced by brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). Visuo-motor rotation (VMR) is a well-known experimental paradigm to introduce visuo-motor errors that closely mimics directional errors induced by BCIs. However, investigations of ErrPs during VMR experiments are limited and reveals different ErrPs depending on task and synchronization. We conducted VMR experiments with 5 randomly selected conditions (no-r

Peripheral component of laryngeal and pharyngeal motor evoked potentials.

In this study, the responses of thyroarytenoid (TA) and cricopharyngeus (CP) muscles were simultaneously recorded to peripheral magnetic stimulation of the vagus nerve. Recordings were performed in 13 subjects by means of concentric needle EMG electrodes inserted in the TA and CP. Magnetic shocks were delivered to the vagus nerve with a round coil placed occipitally, while EMG was silent in the TA. In all subjects, clear-cut responses were obtained simultaneously in both muscles. In TA compared to CP, the maximum amplitude of the responses were higher, whereas the onset latency was shorter. Ou

Methodology of motor evoked potentials in a rabbit model.

Spinal cord ischemia (SCI) is a devastating complication of aortic operations. Neuromonitoring using motor evoked potentials (MEPs) is a sensitive modality to detect SCI in humans. We describe a leporine SCI model using MEPs to test pharmaceutical therapeutics and other neuroprotective adjuncts. In 80 rabbits, methods to obtain MEPs in normotensive and ischemic rabbits were developed. The effects of isoflurane, propofol, apnea, and hypotension on lower extremity MEPs were studied. Lower extremity MEPs disappear upon SCI induction in 78 of 78 (100 %) rabbits. Prior to SCI induction and during a

Mirror movements and ipsilateral motor evoked potentials in ALS.

It can be difficult to detect upper motor neuron (UMN) involvement in early amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The present study tested the usefulness of mirror movements (MMs), i.e., contralateral coactivation of hand muscles, as a UMN sign in ALS. Thirty-seven patients with possible, probable or definite ALS and 19 patients with suspected ALS without clinical signs of UMN involvement, 21 disease controls and 15 healthy volunteers were included. MMs were studied clinically, electromyographically and by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), looking for ipsilateral motor evoked potentials

Motor and somatosensory evoked potentials in cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

We recorded upper and lower limb MEPs and SEPs in 55 patients with clinically suggestive and myelography-documented cervical cord compression due to spondylotic changes. MEPs were abnormal in biceps brachii of 21 patients (38%), in first dorsal interosseous muscle of the hand of 49 patients (89%) and in tibialis anterior of 47 patients (85%). Overall, MEP abnormalities were present in at least one muscle of 51/55 patients (93%). Median SEPs were abnormal in 20 cases (36%), ulnar SEPs in 24 (44%) and posterior tibial SEPs in 40 (73%). Overall incidence of SEP alterations was 73% (40/55) and SEP

Effect of desflurane anesthesia on transcortical motor evoked potentials.

The effect of the volatile anesthetic desflurane on motor evoked potentials was examined in male rats. Animals underwent cortical stimulation using small platinum ball stimulating electrodes secured on the motor cortex. To record evoked compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs), single-shock electrical stimulation was delivered to the forelimb representation of the motor cortex. Muscle responses were readily obtained in the contralateral extensor muscles. The effect of desflurane was examined at various concentrations ranging from 0.7 to 11.4%. With increasing concentrations of desflurane, the

Motor and somatosensory evoked potentials in hereditary spastic paraplegia.

Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) from the arms and legs to transcranial stimulation of the motor cortex and somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) from stimulation of the nerves of the arms and legs, were recorded in 11 patients with hereditary spastic paraplegia. Electrophysiological abnormalities were found to be distributed differently among the systems examined; the longer the pathway, the higher the incidence and severity of impairment. MEPs from the leg were either absent or clearly reduced or prolonged in all patients. Eight patients showed abnormal cortical SSEPs on stimulation of the l

Motor evoked potentials from transcranial stimulation of the motor cortex in humans.

Electrical monitoring of the motor system offers the potential for the detection of injury, the diagnosis of disease, the evaluation of treatment, and the prediction of recovery from damage. Existing evoked potentials monitor one or another sensory modality, but no generally usable motor monitor exists. We have reported a motor evoked potential using direct stimulation of the spinal cord over the motor tracts in cats and in humans. To achieve a less invasive monitor, we used transcranial stimulation over the motor cortex in the cat, thus stimulating the motor cortex. We report here the initial

Motor evoked potentials in 43 high risk spine deformities.

INTRODUCTION: Correction of pediatric spine deformities is challenging surgical procedures. This fragile group of patients has many risk factors, therefore prevention of most fearing complication-paraplegia is extremely important. Monitoring of transmission of neurophysiological impulses through motor and sensor pathways of spinal cord gives us an insight into cord's function, and predicts postoperative neurological status. GOAL: Aim of this work is to present our experiences in monitoring of spinal cord motor function - MEP during surgical corrections of the hardest pediatric spine deformiti

[Motor evoked potentials in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy].

We applied somatosensory and motor evoked potential studies to investigate patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) diagnosed clinically and roentgenographically. There were 32 consecutive cases collected, including 25 males and 7 females, at an average age of 62 +/- 8.2 (49-75) years. A control group consisted of 30 healthy subjects matched in body height and age with patients. The normal values of head-to-neck and head-to-lumbar region central motor conduction times (CMCTs) were 7.04 +/- 0.60 (6.1-8.2) and 15.94 +/- 1.23 (14.0-18.7) ms, which were not affected by body height. Somatosensory evoked potentials and motor cortex stimulation in myelopathies.

Short latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) to stimulation of the tibial nerve at the ankle and at the knee and motor action potentials (MAPs) recorded from the tibial muscle during transcranial stimulation of the motor cortex were recorded in 21 patients with myelopathy. The electrophysiological results were compared with the clinical evolution over 12 months. Both scalp SSEPs and MAPs were absent in 10 patients with clinically 'complete cord transection.' The clinical and electrophysiological data remained unchanged in these patients. Scalp SSEPs were present at the first examinati

Transesophageal motor-evoked potentials, a novel method induced by transesophageal spinal cord stimulation, are less sensitive to anesthetics than transcranial motor-evoked potentials.

PURPOSE: Intraoperative neurologic monitoring can be useful, but transcranial motor evoked potentials (TcMEPs) are sensitive to anesthetic agents. We compared the effects of anesthetics on the newly developed transesophageal motor evoked potentials (TeMEPs) with those on TcMEPs. METHODS: Eleven pigs (25.6 ± 0.8 kg) were anesthetized by desflurane inhalation, remifentanil was maintained at 0.5 µg/kg/min until the end of the experiment. End-tidal desflurane concentration was then maintained at 7, 4, 10, and 13%, and TcMEPs and TeMEPs were measured at each concentration. Desflurane was then disc

Intraoperative Transcranial Motor-Evoked Potentials Predict Motor Function Outcome in Intracerebral Hemorrhage Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Prediction of motor function after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) often poses a diagnostic challenge. This study was performed to investigate whether intraoperative monitoring of motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) could predict postoperative motor function recovery. METHODS: We reviewed 16 consecutive patients undergoing evacuation of supratentorial ICH with hemiplegia between June 2011 and October 2014. Patients were categorized according to the results of MEPs before and after evacuation of hematoma. The correlation between detection of MEPs and prognosis of motor function was analyz

Motor-evoked potentials after focal electrical stimulation predict drug-induced convulsion potentials in rats.

Drug-induced convulsions-often caused by the inhibition of GABA receptors and stimulation of glutamate receptors-are difficult to predict in animals. In this study, we attempted to detect the proconvulsant potential using motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) after focal electrical stimulation or upon using a functional observational battery (FOB). Pentylenetetrazole, kainic acid, and pilocarpine were used as convulsion-inducing drugs, and baclofen was used as a negative control. First, each compound was administered to male rats, and the FOB tests were performed. All drugs induced behavioral changes
