Physiologic tolerance to uncompensable heat: intermittent exercise, field vs laboratory.

PURPOSE: This study determined whether exercise (30 min)-rest (10 min) cycles alter physiologic tolerance to uncompensable heat stress (UCHS) when outdoors in the desert. In addition, the relationship between core temperature and exhaustion from heat strain previously established in laboratory studies was compared with field studies. METHODS: Twelve men completed four trials: moderate intensity continuous exercise (MC), moderate intensity exercise with intermittent rest (MI), hard intensity continuous exercise (HC), and hard intensity exercise with intermittent rest (HI). UCHS was achieved by

Exercise tolerance and work ability following aorto-coronary bypass surgery.

This investigation was performed to study the reasons for receiving disability pension after aortocoronary bypass surgery. During the period March 1983 to November 1985, 250 patients underwent aortocoronary bypass surgery. At a mean follow-up of 4.9 years (range 3.6-6.7) after the operation, 31 patients were dead. Of the 219 survivors, all except four underwent a follow-up examination including an exercise test. The mean physical work capacity had increased from 92.2 W preoperatively to 119.3 W at follow-up (p < 0.001). At follow-up, however, 72 patients had received disability pension. The pe

[Exercise tolerance in children with primary bicuspid valve prolapse syndrome].

Exercise tolerance in children with the primary bicuspid valve prolapse syndrome has been evaluated with ergometric test. Additionally, an effect of environmental factors on exercise tolerance has been assessed in children from the urban and rural areas. A good tolerance of submaximal loads has been shown in both groups. However, the obtained results have been significantly more favourable in children from rural areas. The authors have concluded that limitation of exercise in children with bicuspid valve prolapse is not necessary during an intensive growth.

Human tolerance to heat strain during exercise: influence of hydration.

This study determined whether 1) exhaustion from heat strain occurs at the same body temperatures during exercise in the heat when subjects are euhydrated as when they are hypohydrated, 2) aerobic fitness influences the body temperature at which exhaustion from heat strain occurs, and 3) curves could be developed to estimate exhaustion rates at a given level of physiological strain. Seventeen heat-acclimated men [maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) from 45 to 65 ml.kg-1.min-1] attempted two heat stress tests (HSTs): one when euhydrated and one when hypohydrated by 8% of total body water. The HSTs c

Diastolic mechanisms of impaired exercise tolerance in aortic valve disease.

In order to determine the significance of abnormalities of diastolic function in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy, exercise echocardiography to heart rates of 140 to 150 beats/min was performed in 18 normal subjects and 14 patients after aortic valve replacement. Simultaneous echo-, phono-, and electrocardiograms were recorded. Left ventricular cavity size was determined at end-diastole and end-systole. The timing of mitral valve opening and closure was measured, and hence left ventricular filling time derived, expressed either as ms/beat, or s/min when multiplied by heart rate. Isov

Plaat1 deficiency reduces cardiac cardiolipin content and impairs exercise tolerance.

Phospholipase A and acyltransferase 1 (PLAAT1) catalyzes O-transacylase, N-transacylase, and phospholipase A1/2 reactions. We have demonstrated that PLAAT1 has O-transacylase activity in vitro using phosphatidylcholine as an acyl donor and monolysocardiolipin (MLCL) as an acyl acceptor, generating cardiolipin. However, a role for PLAAT1 in cardiolipin regulation in vivo has not yet been reported. We generated Plaat1-deficient (Plaat1-/-) mice and studied males and females for gross morphological differences, food intakes, respiratory gas exchange, total energy expenditure, and voluntary activi

Nutritional State and COPD: Effects on Dyspnoea and Exercise Tolerance.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a disease that is spreading worldwide and is responsible for a huge number of deaths annually. It is characterized by progressive and often irreversible airflow obstruction, with a heterogeneous clinical manifestation based on disease severity. Along with pulmonary impairment, COPD patients display different grades of malnutrition that can be linked to a worsening of respiratory function and to a negative prognosis. Nutritional impairment seems to be related to a reduced exercise tolerance and to dyspnoea becoming a major determinant in patient-p

Improved exercise tolerance after enzyme replacement therapy in Pompe disease.

PURPOSE: Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) has recently became available for Pompe disease. Data on the effects of ERT on physiological variables related to exercise tolerance have never been published. METHODS: Pulmonary gas exchange, cardiac output (by impedance cardiography), and vastus lateralis muscle O₂ extraction (by near-infrared spectroscopy) were determined during cycle ergometer exercise in a 50-yr-old patient before and after 1, 12, and 24 months of ERT. RESULTS: At the same constant-workload submaximal exercise, RPE, R, pulmonary ventilation, and HR were lower during ERT versus b

Exercise training attenuates lipectomy-induced impaired glucose tolerance in rats.

OBJECTIVE: Since visceral adipose tissue (VAT) may account for impaired peripheral and hepatic insulin sensitivity (IS), it has been hypothesized that the partial removal of VAT could result in improved insulin action, while the re-growth of the excised tissue and/or compensatory growth of non-excised depots seems to occur. Thus, it was aimed to investigate whether or not VAT removal and exercise affect IS. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were fed a high-fat diet and subsequently assigned randomly to one of four groups: 1. exercised plus lipectomized (EL), 2. exercised plus sham-lipectomized (ES),

Hyperhydration: tolerance and cardiovascular effects during uncompensable exercise-heat stress.

This study examined the efficacy of glycerol and water hyperhydration (1 h before exercise) on tolerance and cardiovascular strain during uncompensable exercise-heat stress. The approach was to determine whether 1-h preexercise hyperhydration (29.1 ml H2O/kg lean body mass with or without 1.2 g/kg lean body mass of glycerol) provided a physiological advantage over euhydration. Eight heat-acclimated men completed three trials (control euhydration before exercise, and glycerol and water hyperhydrations) consisting of treadmill exercise-heat stress (ratio of evaporative heat loss required to maxi

[Exercise tolerance for indicating of aortocoronary bypass surgery (author's transl)].

In order to evaluate effects of aortocoronary bypass grafting on exercise tolerance, we analyzed the data of 109 patients who performed exercise tests before and one month or one year after surgery. Subgroups of patients were formed on the basis of preoperative exercise tolerance. Previously severely impaired patients benefited from surgery by an improvement of exercise capacity, whether preoperative left ventricular enddiastolic pressure at rest exceeded 16 mm Hg and left ventricular ejection fraction was below 50% or not. On the other hand, exercise capacity of patients who were comparable i

A simple exercise test for the prediction of relative heat tolerance.

A medical screening exercise test is presented which accurately predicts relative heat tolerance during work in very hot environments. The test consisted of 15-20 min of exercise at a standard absolute intensity of about 600 kcal/hr (140W) with the subject wearing a vapor-barrier suit. Five minutes after the subject exercised, recovery heart rate was measured. When this heart rate is used, a physiological limit (+/- approximately 5 min) can be predicted with 95% confidence for the most intense work-heat conditions found in nuclear power stations. In addition, site health and safety personnel c

The role of coenzyme Q10 in exercise tolerance and muscle strength.

Context: Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vital compound found in nearly all cells, and in mitochondria, it facilitates ATP production, and its reduced form acts as a powerful antioxidant, neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and preventing oxidative damage. Notably, during intense or endurance exercise, the body's increased energy demands and ROS production can lead to oxidative stress, muscle fatigue, inflammation, and exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). Objectives: This review will explore the mechanisms of CoQ10, its impact on exercise performance to be addressed. Results: CoQ10 has been

Sternocleidomastoid Muscle Thickness Correlates with Exercise Tolerance in Patients with COPD.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have difficulties inhaling as the diaphragm becomes flattened and weakened due to lung hyperinflation. This weakened respiratory function is compensated for by the increased activity of the accessory respiratory muscles, such as the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM). OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the difference in the SCM thickening fraction (SCM TF) of each respiratory phase (end-expiration, resting inspiration, and end-inspiration), as measured using ultrasonography (US), between patients with COPD and control

Arterial Stiffness Index and Exercise Tolerance in Patients Undergoing Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Arterial stiffness contributes to the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the relationship between the arterial stiffness and exercise tolerance in CVD patients with preserved ejection fraction (pEF) and those with reduced EF (rEF) is unclear. We enrolled 358 patients who participated in cardiac rehabilitation and underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing at Juntendo University Hospital. After excluding 195 patients who had undergone open heart surgery and 20 patients with mid-range EF, the patients were divided into pEF (n = 99) and rEF (n = 44) groups. Arterial stiffness w
