Responding to the existentials of non-life-threatening chronic conditions.

Diagnosis of a major life-threatening illness can prompt a range of existential responses that typically include strong emotions and a reassessment of priorities. What has not attracted attention are the existential responses to being told about less major but permanent medical conditions. A conceptual frame is developed for identifying and speaking about the existential dynamics of permanent change. It introduces two key concepts, finitude and transcendence, and uses them to explain the common sequence of responses first from being told about a chronic condition through to when its presence h

A phenomenological-contextual, existential, and ethical perspective on emotional trauma.

After a brief overview of the author's phenomenological-contextualist psychoanalytic perspective, the paper traces the evolution of the author's conception of emotional trauma over the course of three decades, as it developed in concert with his efforts to grasp his own traumatized states and his studies of existential philosophy. The author illuminates two of trauma's essential features: (1) its context-embeddedness-painful or frightening affect becomes traumatic when it cannot find a context of emotional understanding in which it can be held and integrated, and (2) its existential significan

Overactivity and boundary setting in anorexia nervosa: an existential perspective.

Excessive motor activity in anorexia nervosa has been variously described as a symptom of a wider perceptual disorder, as the cause of anorexia, and as a neurologically based compulsive behavior. It is also considered a secondary symptom used to burn calories. In this paper, this symptom is considered from an existential perspective. It is first shown that the anorexic's mode of being is overly rational and not irrational as claimed by cognitive-behaviorists. It is then hypothesized that overactivity may help the anorexic person achieve a sense of existential permanence by dynamizing her stati

Sedation indicated?-rethinking existential suffering: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The indication "existential suffering (ES)" for palliative sedation therapy is included in most frameworks for palliative sedation and has been controversially discussed for decades. The appellative character of ES demands rapid relief and sedation often appears to be the best or only solution. ES is still poorly understood and so often neglected by health care professionals due to a lack of consensus regarding assessment, definition and treatment in the international medical literature. Based on a selective review of the literature on ES we propose a different view o

The existential effects of traumatic experiences: a survey of young adults.

This study examined the relation between exposure to trauma and attitudes toward existential issues. Participants were 504 undergraduate students (average age = 19.67) who answered questions on exposure to trauma, fear of death, overall distress, and meaning in life. Results indicated that those with a history of trauma exposure had higher levels of overall distress, but there were no differences in death anxiety or meaning in life. The results suggest that the positive outcomes (less fear of death and increased meaning in life) associated with exposure to traumatic events may be relatively ra

Chemical Coping and the Role of Palliating Existential Suffering: A Case Study.

AbstractWhile palliative medicine has a clear mandate to address the somatic suffering of patients, it remains less clear how palliative medicine should intervene-if at all-in the management of existential suffering. We detail the case of a patient with terminal gastrointestinal cancer. Through consideration of this case, we make determinations regarding what is ethically required, as well as ways in which these implications may generalize to appropriately similar cases. Specifically, we draw two conclusions. First, standard risk-benefit calculus must be recalibrated to account for the irrelev

Adolescents' Experiences of Existential Loneliness Regarding Receiving and Providing Support.

Among adolescents, loneliness is common. One kind of loneliness, existential loneliness, is understood as a painful part of the human condition. During adolescence, existential loneliness has been shown to be challenging to navigate independently. Therefore, this study aimed to explore Swedish adolescents' experiences of existential loneliness regarding receiving and providing support. This study had an exploratory qualitative design based on focus group discussions (n = 9) comprising 30 Swedish adolescents (median age 18). The data was analysed inductively using thematic analysis. The adolesc

On the tetrad of human malady: disease, illness, sickness, and existential suffering.

The triad of disease, illness, and sickness is well established in the philosophy, sociology, and anthropology of medicine as well as in clinical practice. Nonetheless, the triad is criticized for being too simplistic and for excluding important aspects of human suffering. One such critique is that it does not account for existential suffering, which is especially relevant in severe and life-threatening diseases. Accordingly, this study investigates whether existential suffering adds to the concepts of disease, illness, and sickness making up a tetrad of human malady. To do so, I investigate t

Elements for a Phenomenology of Cultures: Cultural Existentials and the Dialectical Experiential Matrix.

BACKGROUND: Phenomenological psychopathology has traditionally focused on individual experience, yet contemporary clinical practice increasingly requires understanding of how collective cultural forces shape psychological life. In an era of advanced globalization, stable social aggregates have given way to fluid "cultural flows" that transcend geographical and social boundaries, necessitating new conceptual frameworks for clinical assessment. SUMMARY: This paper proposes a critical expansion of phenomenological psychopathology of the individual to explicitly integrate the collective dimension

Existential hypnotherapy for ADHD: A novel approach to authenticity-based treatment.

This paper introduces Existential Hypnotherapy as a novel treatment approach for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), integrating evidence-based hypnotherapeutic techniques with clinically relevant existential principles. The growing evidence suggesting environmental factors significantly influence ADHD development supports interventions addressing both neurobiological and meaning-oriented dimensions of the condition. Hypnotherapy has demonstrated efficacy for attention regulation, with studies showing moderate effect sizes (d = 0.63) and enhanced durability of outcomes compared to

Designing and psychometrics properties of Existential Guilt Questionnaire in cancer patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Clinically, existential issues are of significant importance in cancer patients, particularly existential guilt. To measure this construct, a suitable tool is needed. Therefore, this study aimed to design and validate the Existential Guilt Questionnaire (EGQ) in cancer patients. METHOD: This study employed a sequential exploratory mixed-method design for tool development. In the qualitative phase of tool design, the hybrid concept analysis method was used to explain the concept of existential guilt and generate items. Subsequently, psychometric properties such as fac

Psychedelic-assisted therapies for existential and spiritual suffering in palliative care.

Existential and spiritual suffering are frequently reported by individuals facing serious illnesses, particularly at the end of life, and are associated with diminished quality of life, increased psychological distress, and requests for hastened death. While Palliative Care (PC) aims to provide holistic support, existing therapeutic options often fail to adequately address the profound disruptions in meaning, connection, and dignity experienced by patients. Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies (PAT), notably those using psilocybin, have re-emerged as promising interventions capable of eliciting tran

[A He(art) museum for an existential rebirth after a myocardial infarction].

Rebuilding one's life after a myocardial infarction requires mobilizing each and every resource available during a difficult period. Medical treatments, physical training and patient education (PE) help to initiate this process. Associating healthcare with art and culture is known to favour an existential « rebirth » and positive biological effects. Since 2019, we propose an initiation to museotherapy (museum in health) to patients in our cardiac rehabilitation program. This article summarizes the evidence about museotherapy benefits in cardiovascular diseases and describes the experience gath

The Posttraumatic Growth Inventory: A Revision Integrating Existential and Spiritual Change.

Spiritual Change (SC) is one of 5 domains of posttraumatic growth (PTG). The current Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) assesses this area of growth with only 2 items, one focusing on religiosity and the other focusing on spiritual understanding. The addition of 4 newly developed spiritual-existential change (SEC) items, creating an expanded PTGI (Posttraumatic Growth Inventory-X), reflects a diversity of perspectives on spiritual-existential experiences that are represented in different cultures. Samples were obtained from 3 countries: the United States (n = 250), Turkey (n = 502), and Jap

Existential hazards of the multicultural individual: defining and understanding "cultural homelessness".

Cultural homelessness (CH) is the authors' term to describe unique experiences and feelings reported by some multicultural individuals. Ethnically related concepts found in the cross-cultural and multiethnic literature (e.g., marginality, intercultural effectiveness, ethnic enclaves, reference group) are used to explain how CH may arise from cross-cultural tensions within the ethnically mixed family and between the family and its culturally different environment, especially due to geographic moves. CH is conceptualized as a situationally imposed developmental challenge, forcing the child to ac

Project-of-being in transformation: existential experience in bariatric surgery in light of phenomenology.

OBJECTIVES: to understand, in light of the Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology, the existential experiences of people who have undergone bariatric surgery. METHODS: qualitative study conducted between April and July 2024 with 13 participants at different stages of postoperative recovery, recruited via social media and snowball sampling. Interviews were conducted remotely and analyzed in light of Heidegger's hermeneutic phenomenology. RESULTS: the narratives indicate that obesity is experienced as an existential limitation that affects identity, social relationships, and being-in-the-world
