The Mars Sample Return (MSR) Campaign must meet a series of scientific and technical achievements to be successful. While the respective engineering responsibilities to retrieve the samples have been formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding between ESA and NASA, the roles and responsibilities of the scientific elements have yet to be fully defined. In April 2020, ESA and NASA jointly chartered the MSR Science Planning Group 2 (MSPG2) to build upon previous planning efforts in defining 1) an end-to-end MSR Science Program and 2) needed functionalities and design requirements for an MSR

The Mars Sample Return Planning Group 2 (MSPG2) was tasked with identifying the steps that encompass all the curation activities that would happen within the MSR Sample Receiving Facility (SRF) and any anticipated curation-related requirements. An area of specific interest is the necessary analytical instrumentation. The SRF would be a Biosafety Level-4 facility where the returned MSR flight hardware would be opened, the sample tubes accessed, and the martian sample material extracted from the tubes. Characterization of the essential attributes of each sample would be required to provide enoug

The search for possible biosignature gases in habitable exoplanet atmospheres is accelerating, although actual observations are likely years away. This work adds isoprene, C5H8, to the roster of biosignature gases. We found that isoprene geochemical formation is highly thermodynamically disfavored and has no known abiotic false positives. The isoprene production rate on Earth rivals that of methane (CH4; ∼500 Tg/year). Unlike methane, on Earth isoprene is rapidly destroyed by oxygen-containing radicals. Although isoprene is predominantly produced by deciduous trees, isoprene production is ubiq

Primitive photosynthetic microorganisms, either dormant or dead, may remain today on the martian surface, akin to terrestrial cyanobacteria surviving endolithically in martian analog sites on Earth such as the Antarctic Dry Valleys and the Atacama Desert. Potential markers of martian photoautotrophs include the red edge of chlorophyll reflectance spectra or fluorescence emission from systems of light-harvesting pigments. Such biosignatures, however, would be modified and degraded by long-term exposure to ionizing radiation from the unshielded cosmic ray flux onto the martian surface. In this i

Chemical biosignatures, if present, are exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation at several locations in the solar system, including the martian surface. Solid thin-layer samples are commonly used to study the effect of UV irradiation on the stability of potential organic biosignatures in the laboratory and in space. Given the limitations of the layer deposition techniques previously used in astrobiology experiments, such as sublimation-recondensation and casting, antisolvent precipitation (i.e., crystallization from solution by addition of a poor solvent) offers a promising alternative. We appli

Thousands of exoplanets orbit nearby stars, showcasing a remarkable diversity in mass, size and orbits. With the James Webb Space Telescope now operational, we are observing exoplanet atmospheres and aiming to reach down to small, habitable-zone exoplanets in search of signs of habitability and possibly even biosignature gases. Given the scarcity of targets, it is imperative to embrace the known diversity and consider the range of exoplanets that might host life. We review how Earth life interacts with various atmospheric gases, noting that bacteria can survive in high concentrations of gases

Laminae are millimeter-scale features in rocks created by physiochemical processes that can be influenced by the presence and activities of communities of organisms that occur as biofilms and microbial mats. The structure and composition of laminae reflect the processes involved in their formation and can be preserved in the rock record over geologic time; however, diagenetic and metamorphic alteration can lead to the loss of primary information and confusion over the interpretation of their origins. As potential records of ancient life, laminae can preserve evidence of microbial activity over

In this work various factors on the habitability were considered, focusing on conditions irrespective of the central star's radiation, to see the role of specific planetary body related effects. These so called planetary factors were evaluated to identify those trans-domain issues where important information is missing but good chance exit to be filled by new knowledge that might be gained in the next decade(s). Among these strategic knowledge gaps, specific issues are listed, like occurrence of radioactive nucleides in star forming regions, models to estimate the existence of subsurface liqui

Chiral molecules are ubiquitous and necessary for life as we know it. In extant life, the amino acid and sugar constituents of proteins and biopolymers consist of only one enantiomer. This "homochirality" is plausibly generic to any biochemical life and therefore may represent a pure, agnostic biosignature. The ultraviolet (UV) circular polarization spectrum offers a practical method for detecting chirality for generic biomass and hence can be a powerful tool for detecting such biosignatures in an extraterrestrial setting. Here, we demonstrate distinctive UV chiral signatures from astrobiology

Ancient martian organic matter is likely to take the form of kerogen-like recalcitrant macromolecular organic matter (MOM), existing in close association with reactive mineral surfaces, especially iron oxides. Detecting and identifying a biological origin for martian MOM will therefore be of utmost importance for life-detection efforts at Mars. We show that Type I and Type IV kerogens provide effective analogues for putative martian MOM of biological and abiological (meteoric) provenances, respectively. We analyze the pyrolytic breakdown products when these kerogens are mixed with mineral matr

This paper presents a case study of microbe transportation in the Mars-satellites system. We examined the spatial distribution of potential impact-transported microbes on the Martian moons using impact physics by following a companion study (Fujita et al., in this issue). We used sterilization data from the precede studies (Patel et al., 2018; Summers, 2017). We considered that the microbes came mainly from the Zunil crater on Mars, which was formed during 1.0-0.1 Ma. We found that 70-80% of the microbes are likely to be dispersed all over the moon surface and are rapidly sterilized due to sol

Variations in the axial tilt, or obliquity, of terrestrial planets can affect their climates and therefore their habitability. Kepler-62f is a 1.4 R⊕ planet orbiting within the habitable zone of its K2 dwarf host star. We perform N-body simulations that monitor the evolution of obliquity of Kepler-62f for 10-million-year timescales to explore the effects on model assumptions, such as the masses of the Kepler-62 planets and the possibility of outer bodies. Significant obliquity variation occurs when the rotational precession frequency overlaps with one or more of the secular orbital frequencies

Chloride-bearing deposits and phyllosilicates-bearing units are widely distributed in the southern highlands of Mars, but these phases are rarely found together in fluviolacustrine environments. The study of the coexistence of these minerals can provide important insights into geochemistry, water activity, and ultimately the climate and habitability of early Mars. Here we use high-resolution compositional and morphological orbiter data to identify and characterize the context of diverse minerals in a Noachian fluviolacustrine environment west of Knobel crater (6.7°S, 226.8°W). The chlorides in

We present results on the fragmentation of adenine dication as a function of the excitation energy. The adenine molecule is charged and excited in a single collision with Cl(+) ion at 3 keV and the excitation energy distribution is obtained for each fragmentation channel by measuring the kinetic energy loss of the projectile. This method named collision induced dissociation under energy control is based on the formation of a negative scattered projectile as a result of double electron capture from the target molecule. Comparison between the main dissociation channels of singly and doubly charg

Eight characteristics of the unique suite of amino acids and hydroxy acids found in the Murchison meteorite can be recognized on the basis of detailed molecular and isotopic analyses. The marked structural correspondence between the alpha-amino acids and alpha-hydroxy acids and the high deuterium/hydrogen ratio argue persuasively for their formation by aqueous phase Strecker reactions in the meteorite parent body from presolar, i.e., interstellar, aldehydes, ketones, ammonia, and hydrogen cyanide. The characteristics of the meteoritic suite of amino acids and hydroxy acids are briefly enumerat

Astrobiological analog environments comprise Earth-based environments that share similarities with a target setting (another planetary body or Precambrian Earth conditions) and whose defining features influence extant or fossil biological components, enabling astrobiological interpretation. Although not synonymous with extreme environments, they often impose selective pressures that favor extremophiles and extremotolerant organisms, making them suitable for exploring habitability, the limits of life, and its evolutionary history. Global cataloging initiatives have identified such sites worldwi

In the search for life on Mars, evaluating the biogenicity of morphological structures may be important, as they can provide a primary independent line of evidence for past life and can be used to target areas to focus further analyses. However, our experience with terrestrial materials indicates that the deleterious effects of diagenetic processes regularly make the assessment, and even detection, of microfossils and other microscopic biosignatures challenging. To improve our understanding of these effects on Mars, we collected samples that contained sheath-shaped extracellular structures pro

Samples returned from Mars would be placed under quarantine at a Sample Receiving Facility (SRF) until they are considered safe to release to other laboratories for further study. The process of determining whether samples are safe for release, which may involve detailed analysis and/or sterilization, is expected to take several months. However, the process of breaking the sample tube seal and extracting the headspace gas will perturb local equilibrium conditions between gas and rock and set in motion irreversible processes that proceed as a function of time. Unless these time-sensitive proces

Answering the question of whether life ever existed on Mars is a key goal of both NASA's and ESA's imminent Mars rover missions. The obfuscatory effects of oxidizing salts, such as perchlorates and sulfates, on organic matter during thermal decomposition analysis techniques are well established. Less well studied are the transformative effects of iron oxides and (oxy)hydroxides, which are present in great abundances in the martian regolith. We examined the products of flash pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (a technique analogous to the thermal techniques employed by past, current

Exposure experiments that involve biological samples subjected to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation (UVA, UVB, and UVC wavelengths) have advanced an understanding of biological responses in the harsh environment of space. These experiments provide insights about the role of such materials with regard to the origin and evolution of life and the development of protective strategies for long-term space habitation. A solar UV detector was developed to measure solar UV irradiance during exposure experiments as part of the Space Radiobiological Exposure Facility (SREF) on the China Space Station (CSS
