The effect of exotropia on the intelligence of children is unknown. This study aimed to assess the intelligence in children with exotropia and investigate the influence of the main clinical indexes of strabismus on intelligence. Eighty-four participants aged 8-12 years were enrolled, including 37 patients with exotropia (exotropia group) and 47 normal individuals (normal group). Intelligence was assessed by the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV), including the Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI), Perceptual Reasoning Index (PRI), Working Memory Index (WMI), Processi

Surgical treatment of childhood intermittent exotropia (XT) is associated with high recurrence rates. In addition, the natural history of intermittent XT has not been rigorously studied and, anecdotally, some cases resolve without surgery. We compared long-term cure rates in children with surgically and non-surgically managed intermittent XT. Children undergoing surgery for intermittent XT who had 5 years follow-up were retrospectively identified. A non-surgical cohort of comparable children was selected by matching each surgical patient for age at onset and age at the 5-year examination. Cure

PURPOSE: To review the results and techniques of surgical treatment of consecutive exotropia.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of all patients who underwent surgery for consecutive exotropia in a pediatric ophthalmology practice between 1992 and 2001. Patients were excluded if follow-up lasted < 6 weeks or if exotropia was caused by other ocular disorders such as previous trauma or congenital cataracts.
RESULTS: Fifty-nine patients were identified. The procedure performed in the majority of cases was unilateral lateral rectus recession and medial rectus advancement to the o

PURPOSE: Consensus is lacking around optimal surgical strategies to correct V-pattern exotropia (VXT). This study quantitatively examined alternative surgical strategies and dosing .
DESIGN: Comparative interventional case series.
METHODS: Consecutive patients with VXT undergoing strabismus surgery between 2014 and 2025 were reviewed. Incomitance of at least 15D between sursumversion and deorsumversion was considered V-pattern. Surgeries were performed by 2 surgeons using identical technique. The primary outcome was the surgical alignment effect.
RESULTS: A total of 55 patients (36 children

Pit viper snake venom exerts a mildly neurotoxic effect that may rarely lead to neurotoxic complications, such as paralytic strabismus. Extraocular muscles are known to be particularly susceptible to this complication. In previously reported cases, the medial rectus muscle has been the most frequently involved. We report the first case of a pit viper snakebite resulting in comitant exotropia without obvious paralytic features.

Introduction: Residual exotropia refers to a constant outward deviation of eye noted after strabismus surgery for exotropia once postoperative healing is complete (≥6-8 weeks). Management of residual exodeviation necessitates careful evaluation and meticulous surgical planning to achieve optimal outcomes. Methods: A 28-year-old male presented with a 40 prism-diopter residual left exotropia associated with poor convergence. He had a history of childhood strabismus surgery in the left eye; however, the operative records were not available. Preoperative anterior segment optical coherence tomograp

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate age at surgery and duration of misalignment, which affect surgical outcomes of infantile exotropia in healthy children younger than 1 year.
METHODS: The charts of 39 patients who have at least 1 year of follow-up period after surgery with a diagnosis of early-onset exotropia were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were divided into 2 groups (preoperative deviation [PD]): success (exodeviation ≤8 PD or esodeviation ≤5 PD at 1 year postoperatively without reoperation in the whole follow-up period) or failure (exodeviation >8 PD or esodeviation >5 PD at 1 year postoperativ

INTRODUCTION: Primary exotropia is a divergent strabismus that appears from the first day of life to the second year. It can be isolated or associated with a pathological context requiring cerebral imaging to determine diagnosis and prognosis. The objective of this study was to report the sensorimotor state and the result of MRI in infantile exotropia.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Forty-seven children with primary exotropia had a complete ophthalmologic assessment (visual acuity, binocular vision, refraction with cycloplegia, eye fundus) and cerebral MRI (average age, 16 months). Deviation was classi

To evaluate the phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in patients with sensory exotropia subsequent to senile cataract. The authors prospectively studied the role of phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation on 25 patients by observing visual acuity, ocular alignment, binocular vision and diplopia pre-, 1 month post- and 3 months post-operation. The patients underwent follow-up for three months. Postoperatively, one patient had a corrected visual acuity of 20/50, and 24 patients had 20/40 or better. The ocular alignment, binocular vision and diplopia were resolved s

A unique case of alternating, poorly controlled, intermittent strabismus that improved after repair of bilateral, alternating congenital ptosis is described. A 7-year-old boy with bilateral, alternating congenital ptosis and poorly controlled, intermittent exotropia underwent bilateral frontalis suspensions. After surgery, the patient demonstrated improved control of his exotropia. We conclude that an alternating ptosis may lead to sensory deprivation of the occluded eye and decreased fusion, causing an intermittent strabismus to be poorly controlled. Repair of the ptosis to a sufficient eyeli

PURPOSE: To investigate differences in intraocular structure based on the presence or absence of fixation preference in children with intermittent exotropia (IXT) by comparing the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL).
METHODS: From October 2018 to March 2022, RNFL thickness was retrospectively analyzed using spectral domain optical coherence tomography. Participants had uncorrected visual acuity of 20/20, refractive errors close to emmetropia, and no anisometropia. The patients were divided into monocular and alternating exotropia groups through a cover-uncover test. The average

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Unilateral gaze palsy associated with internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO), i.e., one-and-a-half syndrome, is well known. Exotropia can also be associated with INO, but it has been reported only rarely. We sought to determine the frequencies and courses of gaze palsy and exotropia in INO.
METHODS: Patients hospitalized with acute-onset INO during the period January 2009 through December 2013 were identified from our clinical registry. Associated gaze palsy and exotropia were evaluated in the identified patients.
RESULTS: Twenty-five patients with unilateral INO and 7 pa

Difficulties in surgical management of consecutive exotropia. Consecutive exotropia occurs in formerly esotropic patients without binocular vision, either spontaneously or as a result of surgical overcorrection. However, the above cannot provide sufficient explanation in all cases. Patients with consecutive exotropia mostly complain about aesthetic considerations, although a numerous group of patients reports disturbing diplopia. Patients with consecutive exotropia require particular attention of the surgeons, due to the difficulties in pre-operative assessment and, in turn, in planning thesur
