Pacific salmon extinctions: quantifying lost and remaining diversity.

Widespread population extirpations and the consequent loss of ecological, genetic, and life-history diversity can lead to extinction of evolutionarily significant units (ESUs) and species. We attempted to systematically enumerate extinct Pacific salmon populations and characterize lost ecological, life history, and genetic diversity types among six species of Pacific salmon (Chinook [Oncorhynchus tshawytscha], sockeye [O. nerka], coho [O. kisutch], chum [O. keta], and pink salmon [O. gorbuscha] and steelhead trout [O. mykiss]) from the western contiguous United States. We estimated that, colle

Enamel histology in extinct mammals: Standardization of a methodological framework applied to toxodont notoungulates (Mammalia).

Enamel histology may provide valuable insights into dental growth and life history traits. However, this method presents significant challenges for extinct species, particularly as the periodicity of the increments observed cannot be tested experimentally. Here, we propose a standardized methodological framework to formalize what has been done in the literature and help researchers working with fossil taxa. We applied this framework to a fossil dataset composed of 19 molars belonging to four species of Toxodontia (Notoungulata, Mammalia) - an extinct sub-order of South American notoungulates k

Paleohistology of Cretaceous-Paleogene pan-trionychian turtle shells.

At the end of the Cretaceous, a bolide impact wiped out ~75% of life on Earth, but turtles show minimal gross anatomical changes. Herein, we examine the shell histology from trionychid turtles 2 million years before and 8 million years after the extinction event. We collected over 25,000 semi-quantitative and quantitative measurements and statistically compared them against latitude, stratigraphic position, lithologic context, ontogeny, phylogeny, and K/Pg survivorship to better understand the various ways in which each respective variable influences histology. We find that trionychids from mu

Number and arrangement of extraocular muscles in primitive gnathostomes: evidence from extinct placoderm fishes.

Exceptional braincase preservation in some Devonian placoderm fishes permits interpretation of muscles and cranial nerves controlling eye movement. Placoderms are the only jawed vertebrates with anterior/posterior obliques as in the jawless lamprey, but with the same function as the superior/inferior obliques of other gnathostomes. Evidence of up to seven extraocular muscles suggests that this may be the primitive number for jawed vertebrates. Two muscles innervated by cranial nerve 6 suggest homologies with lampreys and tetrapods. If the extra muscle acquired by gnathostomes was the internal

Sex-dependent effects of endocannabinoid modulation of conditioned fear extinction in rats.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Women are twice as likely as men to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) making the search for biological mechanisms underlying these gender disparities especially crucial. One of the hallmark symptoms of PTSD is an alteration in the ability to extinguish fear responses to trauma-associated cues. In male rodents, the endocannabinoid system can modulate fear extinction and has been suggested as a therapeutic target for PTSD. However, whether and how the endocannabinoid system may modulate fear expression and extinction in females remains unknown. EXPERIMENTAL A

Delayed extinction fails to reduce skin conductance reactivity to fear-conditioned stimuli.

A brief 10-min time delay between an initial and subsequent exposure to extinction trials has been found to impair memory reconsolidation in fear-conditioned rodents and humans, providing a potential means to reduce fearfulness in anxiety disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present study used videos of biologically prepared, conditioned stimuli (tarantulas) to test the efficacy of delayed extinction in blocking reconsolidation of conditioned fear in healthy young adults. Strong differential conditioning, measured by skin conductance, was observed among a screened subset of

Rapid riparian ecosystem recovery in low-latitudinal North China following the end-Permian mass extinction.

The greatest mass extinction at the end of the Permian, ca. 252 million years ago, led to a tropical dead zone on land and sea. The speed of recovery of life has been debated, whether fast or slow, and terrestrial ecosystems are much less understood than marine. Here, we show fast reestablishment of riparian ecosystems in low-latitude North China as little as ~2 million years after the end-Permian mass extinction. The initial ichnoassemblages in shallow lacustrine and fluvial facies of late Smithian age are monospecific, devoid of infaunalization, with apparent size reduction. In the following

The influence of climate change on the future distribution of two Thymus species in Iran: MaxEnt model-based prediction.

Within a few decades, the species habitat was reshaped at an alarming rate followed by climate change, leading to mass extinction, especially for sensitive species. Species distribution models (SDMs), which estimate both present and future species distribution, have been extensively developed to investigate the impacts of climate change on species distribution and assess habitat suitability. In the West Asia essential oils of T. daenensis and T. kotschyanus include high amounts of thymol and carvacrol and are commonly used as herbal tea, spice, flavoring agents and medicinal plants. Therefore,

Probability, parameters, and duration of immigration and extinction in microbial communities.

We propose a suite of simple equations to estimate the probability and duration of two important processes in microbial ecology: immigration and extinction. Our work is based on the gambler's ruin equation, which determines the probability that a number of immigrants (i) can attain an abundance N given the ratio of the probabilities of death q and division (or birth) p. We estimate the probability of an organism attaining a value of N in the context of bioaugmentation, transplantation, infection, mutation, and extinction. For example, an inoculum of 108 bacteria with a q/p of 1.00000001 has a

What drives bacterial extinction? The role of bacteriophages.

Bacterial lineages are relatively short-lived on geological timescales, according to phylogenetic analyses, implying that bacterial extinction occurs at high rates. Since the vast majority of bacteria live in large populations in oceans and soils, many well-studied extinction mechanisms, such as demographic or environmental stochasticity, seem unlikely to drive this pattern. We outline mechanisms for the extinction of large bacterial populations, and discuss the emergence of a new virus as a possible cause of extinction. We use deterministic and stochastic models to characterise the persistenc

Enhancing exposure-based therapy from a translational research perspective.

Combining an effective psychological treatment with conventional anxiolytic medication is typically not more effective than unimodal therapy for treating anxiety disorders. However, recent advances in the neuroscience of fear reduction have led to novel approaches for combining psychological therapy and pharmacological agents. Exposure-based treatments in humans partly rely on extinction to reduce the fear response in anxiety disorders. Animal studies have shown that D-cycloserine (DCS), a partial agonist at the glycine recognition site of the glutamatergic N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor facili

The contingent advantage of photosymbiosis in coral evolution.

The ecological success of modern reef-building corals is rooted in photosymbiosis, yet its macroevolutionary benefit remains unclear. Analyzing the Phanerozoic record of inferred zooxanthellate (Z) and azooxanthellate (AZ) corals over geologic time scales using Bayesian methods, we identify a fundamental shift in diversification dynamics and their drivers across the Paleozoic-Mesozoic transition. Although Z corals dominate modern tropical reef ecosystems, their Paleozoic counterparts were outpaced by AZ forms and showed failed recoveries after the Late Devonian mass extinction. We found Z cora

A new notosuchian crocodyliform from the Early Palaeocene of Patagonia and the survival of a large-bodied terrestrial lineage across the K-Pg mass extinction.

Sebecid notosuchians are the only terrestrial crocodyliforms to survive the Cretaceous-Palaeogene extinction, 66 Ma, which eliminated large-bodied species (above approximately 5 kg) in terrestrial ecosystems. Early sebecid evolution is unclear due to the scarcity of remains from both sides of the boundary. We present the stratigraphically earliest post-extinction notosuchian record, from the lower Palaeocene Salamanca Formation of Patagonia. Tewkensuchus salamanquensis n. gen. n. sp. has unique features, including a skull roof with elevated lateral margins, and an accessory peg and socket arti

A review of the non-semiaquatic adaptations of extinct crocodylomorphs throughout their fossil record.

Crocodylomorphs constitute a clade of archosaurs that have thrived since the Mesozoic until today and have survived numerous major biological crises. Contrary to historic belief, their semiaquatic extant representatives (crocodylians) are not living fossils, and, during their evolutionary history, crocodylomorphs have evolved to live in a variety of environments. This review aims to summarize the non-semiaquatic adaptations (i.e., either terrestrial or fully aquatic) of different groups from different periods, highlighting how exactly those different lifestyles are inferred for those animals,

Environmental drivers of body size evolution in crocodile-line archosaurs.

Ever since Darwin, biologists have debated the relative roles of external and internal drivers of large-scale evolution. The distributions and ecology of living crocodilians are controlled by environmental factors such as temperature. Crocodilians have a rich history, including amphibious, marine and terrestrial forms spanning the past 247 Myr. It is uncertain whether their evolution has been driven by extrinsic factors, such as climate change and mass extinctions, or intrinsic factors like sexual selection and competition. Using a new phylogeny of crocodilians and their relatives, we model ev

Hammer-toothed 'marsupial skinks' from the Australian Cenozoic.

Extinct species of Malleodectes gen. nov. from Middle to Late Miocene deposits of the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, northwestern Queensland, Australia are enigmatic, highly specialized, probably snail-eating marsupials. Dentally, they closely resemble a bizarre group of living heterodont, wet forest scincid lizards from Australia (Cyclodomorphus) that may well have outcompeted them as snail-eaters when the closed forests of central Australia began to decline. Although there are scincids known from the same Miocene deposits at Riversleigh, these are relatively plesiomorphic, generalized feed

Neural underpinnings of preferential pain learning and the modulatory role of fear.

Due to its unique biological relevance, pain-related learning might differ from learning from other aversive experiences. This functional magnetic resonance imaging study compared neural mechanisms underlying the acquisition and extinction of different threats in healthy humans. We investigated whether cue-pain associations are acquired faster and extinguished slower than cue associations with an equally unpleasant tone. Additionally, we studied the modulatory role of stimulus-related fear. Therefore, we used a differential conditioning paradigm, in which somatic heat pain stimuli and unpleasa

Climate mitigation contributes more to population persistence than evolutionary adaptation in a long-lived seabird.

Evolutionary rescue-the process by which adaptive evolution prevents population extinction following environmental deterioration -is frequently proposed as a buffer against biodiversity loss under climate change, yet its capacity to alter future population trajectories is rarely assessed quantitatively. Most forecasts of evolutionary rescue rely on simplified demographic models, focus on a single adaptive trait, and explore hypothetical environmental scenarios rather than standardized climate pathways, neglecting uncertainty from demographic and internal climate variability. We developed a hyp

Extreme drought impacts drove local extinction in a social rodent.

Wildlife populations worldwide are increasingly exposed to climatic extremes, yet demographic mechanisms linking environmental variability to local extinction remain poorly understood. We evaluated the population dynamics of a degu (Octodon degus) population in central Chile over a 12-year period (2009-2020) encompassing a decade-long megadrought. Using capture-mark-recapture models, we estimated apparent survival, recruitment, and population growth rates and assessed their relationships with climatic and ecosystem variables. Population growth remained positive throughout most of the study per

Rising plant extinction rates on European mountain summits.

Climate change increases plant species richness in alpine ecosystems. However, to what extent this diversity enrichment masks extinction dynamics of resident species remains elusive. In this study, we used floristic resurvey data from 896 permanent vegetation plots across 62 European mountain summits to show that local extinctions have increased over the past 21 years. Extinction rates rose with the magnitude of warming, and species were more likely to go extinct toward their low-elevation range margins and in communities undergoing stronger thermophilization. Moreover, local extinctions were
