Redirecting mandibular growth through orthodontic dentoalveolar height development in growing patients with Class III malocclusion undergoing maxillary orthopedic protraction.

INTRODUCTION: To control mandibular growth could be the determining factor for any growing patients with Class III malocclusion undergoing maxillary orthopedics. It has been reported that orthodontic dentoalveolar height development (ODHD) through orthodontic total arch extrusion might redirect mandibular growth backward and downward in growing patients with Class III malocclusion. We hypothesized bimaxillary-ODHD (bimax-ODHD) should be equal to or exceed the mandibular condylar growth to redirect the mandible to grow downward and backward in growing patients with Class III malocclusion. The Lynn Maxilla Rotator Combination Appliance and Lynn Archial Face Bow.

This combination orthopedic traction appliance offers a new dimension in treating long faced, mouth breathing patients, who generally exhibit pre-maxillary gingival excess and lip incompetency or a short upper lip. The dynamics of excessive clockwise growth can be reversed if the physical pressures placed on the craniofacial skeletal tissues are reversed. In many instances extraction therapy or orthognatic surgery may be unnecessary to achieve acceptable occlusion and facial esthetics. Dr. Ullrich Teuscher, M.D., D.M.D., of Zurich, Switzerland published an article in the American Journal of Or

Traumatic ulcers and pain during orthodontic treatment.

In the present investigation the frequency of oral ulcers and pain in 161 orthodontic patients was recorded. Of all patients, 95% had experienced pain, but 84.5% said that the pain lasted a few days only. About 11% maintained that the treatment was constantly painful. Significantly more patients coming from private clinics complained of pain than those attending treatment at the Department of Orthodontics. About 50% said that activating or changing archwire was most annoying, whereas 28.7% said ulceration and 21% said headgear was the most annoying part of the treatment. According to 75% of th

Hemifacial microsomia: extraoral appliance for the early treatment of an infant. Literature review and case report.

In this report a description of the different features of hemifacial microsomia is given and a new way of early treatment of concomitant respiratory problems is presented. An extraoral appliance was developed for the treatment of an infant affected with this syndrome. The purpose was to temporarily minimize the child's repeated respiratory disturbances, which were probably caused by glossoptosis, until an autologous costochondral graft in the mandibular ramus could be performed. An improvement of respiration, of facial asymmetry and even a stimulation of mandibular growth was observed. It is c

Early Class III treatment with Hybrid-Hyrax - Facemask in comparison to Hybrid-Hyrax-Mentoplate - skeletal and dental outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Protraction of maxilla is usually the preferred and more commonly used treatment approach for skeletal Class III with a retrognathic maxilla. The aim of this study was the comparison of the skeletal and dental effects of two skeletally borne appliances for maxillary protraction: a) Hybrid-Hyrax in combination with facemask (FM), b) Hybrid-Hyrax in combination with Mentoplate (ME). METHODS: Thirty four Patients (17 facemask, 17 Mentoplate) were investigated by means of pre- and posttreatment cephalograms. The two groups matched with regard to treatment time, age gender and type of

Posteroanterior traction in maxillonasal dysplasia (Binder syndrome). A roentgen stereometric study with the aid of metallic implants.

The study was undertaken to examine the effect of posteroanterior traction in an 11-year-old boy with maxillonasal dysplasia. Movement of the maxillary bones and of the mandible was recorded, by means of roentgen stereophotogrammetry, in relationship to the frontal bone during and after treatment. In the examined child face-mask therapy mainly influenced the position of the mandible while the recorded advancement of the maxillary bones was slight (0.6 mm.). It is possible that the limited maxillary response to traction may be due to insufficient growth capacity of the circummaxillary sutures i

The effects of the headgear therapy on the airway dimensions in patients with class II malocclusion: A systematic review.

Class II malocclusion may be caused by the maxillary protrusion or the mandibular retrusion. One treatment method is to use a headgear, which might affect the dimensions of the patient's airway. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a headgear on the airway dimensions in class II malocclusion patients. A digital search and a manual search were conducted for English-language articles published from January 2000 to December 2018 about human clinical trials, including the usage of a cervical headgear in class II malocclusion patients who had measurable changes in the airway and/or jaw
