Astronaut radiation exposure in low Earth orbit is strongly affected by orbital radiation environment, shielding condition, and radiation quality. In this study, a Geant4-based Monte Carlo model coupled with the adult male mesh-type reference computational phantom of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) was developed to estimate organ doses for astronauts in the Chinese Space Station (CSS) orbit. Proton and electron spectra from the Earth's radiation belts (ERB) were calculated using AP9/AE9, and solar-minimum galactic cosmic ray (GCR) spectra were generated using CRE

UNLABELLED: A significant number of astronauts sustain hand injuries during extravehicular activity training and operations. These hand injuries have been known to cause fingernail delamination (onycholysis) that requires medical intervention. This study investigated correlations between the anthropometrics of the hand and susceptibility to injury.
METHODS: The analysis explored the hypothesis that crewmembers with a high finger-to-hand size ratio are more likely to experience injuries. A database of 232 crewmembers' injury records and anthropometrics was sourced from NASA Johnson Space Cente

INTRODUCTION: Bodyweight loss during spaceflight has been observed among astronauts since the early space missions. Considerable mission data has been accumulated, including data from female astronauts, on the many Shuttle and International Space Station missions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between observed weight loss during spaceflight and potential covariate factors.
METHODS: We performed a statistical analysis of the association between bodyweight change and plausible clinical and mission covariates, using data obtained from the NASA Longitudinal Study of

Intravascular gas embolism can occur with decompression in space flight, and it commonly occurs during cardiac and vascular surgery. Intravascular bubbles may be deposited into any end organ such as the heart or the brain. Surface interactions between the bubble and the endothelial cells lining the vasculature result in serious impairment of blood flow and can lead to heart attack, stroke, or even death. Surfactant-based intervention is a novel treatment for gas embolism. Intravascular surfactant can adsorb onto the gas-liquid interface and compete with blood-borne macromolecules for interfaci

INTRODUCTION: The International Space Station maintains normoxic atmospheric conditions of 14.7 psia (101 kPa) and 21% oxygen. Astronauts don spacesuits to conduct extravehicular activities (EVAs), which operate at a reduced pressure of 4.3 psia (29.6 kPa), and a hyperoxic atmosphere of 100% oxygen. The reduction in pressure presents a risk of decompression sickness and is mitigated by a several hour denitrogenation (aka, prebreathe) protocol. To reduce the time required for prebreathe, future lunar and planetary exploration habitats and vehicles are expected to maintain a hypobaric, mildly hy

The space environment exposes astronauts to risks of acute and chronic exposure to ionizing radiation. Of particular concern is possible exposure to ionizing radiation from a solar particle event (SPE). During an SPE, magnetic disturbances in specific regions of the Sun result in the release of intense bursts of ionizing radiation, primarily consisting of protons that have a highly variable energy spectrum. Thus, SPE events can lead to significant total body radiation exposures to astronauts in space vehicles and especially while performing extravehicular activities. Simulated energy profiles

INTRODUCTION: With increased access to commercial spaceflight and space tourism, plus a push for longer duration spaceflights, it is especially important to understand the impact of spaceflight on musculoskeletal health. Upper extremity injuries are the most common musculoskeletal injuries in spaceflight. It is, therefore, vital to determine the changes to the upper extremities during spaceflight. The purpose of this study was to examine the state of knowledge on the impact of spaceflight on upper extremity orthopedic health, and to identify knowledge gaps and future areas of research.

Spaceflight occasionally requires multiple extravehicular activities (EVA) that potentially subject astronauts to repeated changes in ambient oxygen superimposed on those of space radiation exposure. We thus developed a novel in vitro model system to test lung cell damage following repeated exposure to radiation and hyperoxia. Non-tumorigenic murine alveolar type II epithelial cells (C10) were exposed to >95% O₂ for 8 h only (O₂), 0.25 Gy ionizing γ-radiation (IR) only, or a double-hit combination of both challenges (O₂ + IR) followed by 16 h of normoxia (ambient air containing 21% O₂ and 5% C

Investigative procedures were approved by Henry Ford Human Investigation Committee and NASA Johnson Space Center Committee for Protection of Human Subjects. Informed consent was obtained. Authors evaluated ability of nonphysician crewmember to obtain diagnostic-quality musculoskeletal ultrasonographic (US) data of the shoulder by following a just-in-time training algorithm and using real-time remote guidance aboard the International Space Station (ISS). ISS Expedition-9 crewmembers attended a 2.5-hour didactic and hands-on US training session 4 months before launch. Aboard the ISS, they comple

BACKGROUND: Shoulder injuries are the most frequently reported musculoskeletal condition among astronauts, occurring across all spaceflight mission phases. With rising extravehicular activity (EVA) demands, a detailed understanding of injury patterns is critical. Prior studies have linked prolonged microgravity exposure to post-flight shoulder pathology but have not comprehensively characterized large-scale epidemiologic trends, phase-specific timing, or the influence of cumulative training exposures. Therefore, this study aimed to (1) characterize overall prevalence, identify the top 20 diagn

The following principles, derived from the experience of medical support during past spaceflights, can provide a basis for a system of health monitoring and diagnosis during long-term and interplanetary missions: a system of preflight medical screening; medical screening on a systemic basis, which may include purposeful diagnosis in subsystems following the method of hierarchic structure; use of an individual approach; correction of the medical program with respect to the space crew status; assessment of the interrelations of the entire complex of parameters; utilization of the methods of corr

BACKGROUND: Spaceflight missions may require crewmembers to conduct Extravehicular Activities (EVA) for repair, maintenance or scientific purposes. Pre-breathe protocols in preparation for an EVA entail 100% hyperoxia exposure that may last for a few hours (5-8 hours), and may be repeated 2-3 times weekly. Each EVA is associated with additional challenges such as low levels of total body cosmic/galactic radiation exposure that may present a threat to crewmember health and therefore, pose a threat to the success of the mission. We have developed a murine model of combined, hyperoxia and radiati
