Faster responders are perceived as more extraverted.

Personality inferences are fundamental to human social interactions and have far-reaching effects on various social decisions. Fourteen experiments (13 preregistered; total N = 5,160; using audio, video, and text stimuli) involving British, U.S. American, Singaporean, and Australian participants show that people responding to a question immediately (vs. after a slight pause) are seen as more extraverted. This is because response delays are believed to signal nervousness and passivity, and hence introversion. This effect was consistently observed across a range of scenarios from everyday small

The Association Between Personality Traits and Irritable Bowel Syndrome-Insights From an Exploratory Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests psychological factors including personality traits can have impact on the development and course of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and associated health-related quality of life (HrQoL), with large individual heterogeneity. Main aim of this study was to examine between-persons associations and within-sample concurrent associations of the personality traits neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness, openness and agreeableness with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, psychological factors and HrQoL in IBS-patients. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from an observational

Personality profiles are different in musician's dystonia and other isolated focal dystonias.

Psychological abnormalities have been reported in patients with musician's dystonia. To further differentiate these abnormalities, we evaluated personality traits in musician's dystonia and compared them to those in other isolated focal dystonias. Therefore patients with musician's dystonia (n = 101) and other isolated focal dystonias (n = 85) underwent the Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). Women with musician's dystonia had higher NEO-FFI neuroticism scores, and men significantly higher openness scores compared to women and men with other isolated focal dyston

Differentiations in Interpersonal Functioning Across Narcissism Dimensions.

Narcissism can be conceived hierarchically at three levels: as a global construct (Level 1), as two dimensions (Level 2; grandiosity and vulnerability), and as a trifurcated model with three underlying dimensions: interpersonal antagonism, narcissistic neuroticism, and agentic extraversion (Level 3). The aim of the study was to examine how narcissism dimensions across the three levels differ in their associations with various forms of interpersonal functioning. The authors assessed multiple domains of interpersonal functioning using data collected from 447 MTurk workers, 606 students, and 365

The Stressful Personality: A Meta-Analytical Review of the Relation Between Personality and Stress.

The current study presented the first meta-analytic review on the associations between the Big Five personality traits and stress measured under different conceptualizations (stressor exposure, psychological and physiological stress responses) using a total of 1,575 effect sizes drawn from 298 samples. Overall, neuroticism was found to be positively related to stress, whereas extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness were negatively linked to stress. When stress assessed under different conceptualizations was tested, only neuroticism, agreeableness, and conscientiousness wer

Hope and depression and personality disorders.

Hope is a positive psychology construct that comprises goals, agency thinking, and pathways thinking and has been associated with psychological and physical well-being. This paper summarizes recent findings regarding the relationship between hope and depressive symptoms as well as hope and personality disorders and traits. Studies have shown that hope is inversely associated with negative affect when examined cross-sectionally, although the relationship between hope and depression is more complex longitudinally. Little is known about hope as it pertains to personality disorders, though more re

Personality differences in the occurrence and affective correlates of daily positive events.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research shows that Neuroticism predicts exposure and affective reactivity to daily stressors. Zautra and colleagues extended this work to daily positive events. Building on these frameworks, we examined the Big Five personality traits as predictors of the occurrence and affective correlates of daily positive events. METHOD: Participants in two national U.S. daily diary studies (NSDE 2: N = 1,919 and NSDE Refresher: N = 778; aged 25-84) reported daily positive events, emotions specific to the events, and daily affect for 8 consecutive days. RESULTS: In parallel analyses i

Empathy as a Risk Factor: A Theoretical Review on Depression-Induced Decline in Reading Performance Through the Mediation of Personality Dimensions.

Empathy is frequently studied in isolation in research-yet when considered alongside other psychological components, an entirely different picture emerges of how it operates. Its interaction with personality dimension and its potential role as a risk factor for depression have received limited attention. This theoretical review argues that empathy operates along a spectrum - both excess and deficiency carry distinct risks -and that these risks manifest differently depending on whether affective or cognitive empathy predominates in an individual's personality spectrum.Drawing on a synthesis of

The relational regulation of within-person variation in personality expression.

There is renewed interest in how people express different levels of personality across situations or times (within-person variation). However, within-person studies typically do not focus on the specific relationship partners that are linked to the expression of personality. To remedy this, we applied relational regulation theory (RRT) to the study of within-person variation. RRT states that specific relationship partners are important social contexts for understanding within-person variation and describes how people regulate their affect, action and thought through interacting with or thinkin

Maternal Functioning and Child's Externalizing Problems: Temperament and Sex-Based Driven Effects.

This study examines how maternal adverse parenting (hostility, neglect, low warmth) and psychological distress explain the associations between child temperament factors and externalizing problems. It also examines if these associations differ according to the child's biological sex. The sample consists of 339 school-age children receiving in-school services for conduct problems. Data were collected through questionnaires completed by mothers at 3 time points, at one-year intervals. Results from path analyses revealed that maternal psychological distress partly explained the associations betwe

Mental Health of LGBT+ Young People and Their Parents: A Dyadic Approach.

LGBT+ young people often have poor mental health, and the parent-child relationship seems to play a crucial role in this. The aim of this study was to investigate the psychological factors that may be involved in the mental health of LGBT+ youth and their parents, taking a dyadic approach (i.e. taking into account the interdependence between the young people's characteristics and those of their parents). To di this, 154 dyads including a parent and their LGBT youth aged between 16 and 25, were recruited. They completed an online questionnaire measuring the following variables: two personality

Genes, personality, and political behavior: A replication and extension using Danish twins.

In this article, we examine whether there is genetic overlap between personality traits and political participation, interest, and efficacy. We make several contributions to the literature. First, we use new data from a large sample of twins from Denmark to examine the link between genes, the Big Five traits, and political behavior. Previous research in this area has not examined the Danish context. Second, because our measures have some overlap with those used in previous studies, we are able to examine whether previous findings replicate in a different sample. Finally, we extend the literatu

Personality evaluated: What do people most like and dislike about themselves and their friends?

What do people think their best and worst personality traits are? Do their friends agree? Across three samples, 463 college students ("targets") and their friends freely described two traits they most liked and two traits they most disliked about the target. Coders categorized these open-ended trait descriptors into high or low poles of six trait domains (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, openness, and honesty-humility) and judged whether targets and friends reported the same specific best and worst traits. Best traits almost exclusively reflected high levels

Psychological characteristics of chronic depression: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated the importance of psychological characteristics for chronicity of depression. Knowledge about psychological differences between chronically depressed persons and nonchronically depressed persons may help to improve treatment of chronic depression. This is the first study to simultaneously compare in large samples various psychological characteristics between chronically depressed and nonchronically depressed adults. METHOD: Baseline data were drawn from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA), an ongoing longitudinal cohort study aimed

Maternal trait personality and childbirth: the role of extraversion and neuroticism.

BACKGROUND: anxiety during pregnancy and childbirth can increase risk of complications and interventions for both mother and infant. Although considerable work has explored fear of childbirth and anxiety during labour and subsequent birth outcomes there has been less consideration of the role of more stable maternal personality upon childbirth. Traits of neuroticism and extraversion are however predictive of health outcomes in other fields potentially through biological, psychological and social mechanisms. The aim of the current research was thus to examine the relationship between trait pers

Green mind, healthy mind: investigating nature's role in students' health-related quality of life in China.

BACKGROUND: Connectedness to nature is a psychological concept describing an individual's emotional and cognitive bond with the natural environment. The relationships between Big Five personality traits and environmental connectedness have emerged as a crucial area of study in understanding human well-being and behavior. AIM: This research seeks to understand the complex relationships between Extraversion and Neuroticism, connectedness to nature, and their subsequent impact on Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among Chinese college students through flourishing. Consistent predictors of adolescent substance use: cross-sectional comparison across five countries.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent substance use differs across cultures, but the key drivers may be shared. We examined whether country of residence, psychological distress, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and Big Five personality traits are associated with alcohol and drug use, and whether these associations vary by country. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey of 5,108 upper-secondary students aged 15-19 from the United States, Sweden, Serbia, Morocco, and Vietnam. Outcomes were scores on the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and the Drug Use Disorders Identifica

Exploring the potential psychological predictors associated with changes in depression, anxiety, and well-being following naturalistic psychedelic use.

Although research shows that psychedelic use may lead to improvement in mental health and well-being, the underlying changes in psychological predictors associated with these improvements remain unclear. 161 participants were recruited in a prospective online survey assessing naturalistic psychedelic use. We used lasso regression to assess how 19 distinct changes in psychological variables (e.g., meaning in life, mindfulness) were linked to future changes in depression, anxiety, and well-being changes. We found increases in meaning in life (β = 0.229, 95 % CI [0.101, 0.357], p < 0.01), agreeab
