Extreme Heat and Emergency Health Impacts in the US (2018-2025).

Future climate projections suggest an increase in heat-related mortality and a decrease in cold-related deaths under warming scenarios. Understanding the health impacts of extreme heat, and their implications for healthcare demand is essential for assessing the future burden of climate-related illnesses. In this study, we examined the relationship between extreme heat events and Emergency Department Visits (EDV) for heat-related illnesses (HRIs) across the United States from 2018 to 2025. Using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Heat and Health Tracker and other rel

Exposure to Extreme Heat Increases Preterm Birth Risk: Hypothetical Pathophysiological Mechanisms.

Preterm birth (PTB), delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, is the leading cause of neonatal mortality globally, accounting for nearly half of all neonatal deaths. While numerous established risk factors for PTB have been identified, ongoing research continues to elucidate additional contributing factors. Epidemiological studies increasingly demonstrate that elevated ambient temperature is an environmental risk factor for PTB, with odds increasing 16% during heat waves and 5% per 1°C temperature rise. This is particularly concerning given escalating global warming trends. While maternal heat s

Human tolerance to extreme heat: evidence from a desert climate population.

BACKGROUND: Ambient temperatures exceeding 40 °C are projected to become common in many temperate climatic zones due to global warming. Therefore, understanding the health effects of continuous exposure to high ambient temperatures on populations living in hot climatic regions can help identify the limits of human tolerance. OBJECTIVE: We studied the relationship between ambient temperature and non-accidental mortality in the hot desert city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, between 2006 and 2015. METHODS: We used a distributed lag nonlinear model to estimate the mortality-temperature association over

The effects of extreme heat on stroke hospitalizations: Evidence from China.

This study examines the impact of extreme heat on stroke-related hospitalization outcomes, specifically total expenditures and length of hospital stay, in a developing country context. Using patient-level hospitalization data collected from a major Chinese city, we report that heatwave exposure is positively correlated with both hospitalization expenditures and duration. Specifically, each additional day within the preceding week in which the average temperature exceeds 30 °C, relative to a moderate-temperature day (18-22 °C), is associated with a 1.92% (95% CI 1.390-2.453, 340.98 yuan) increa

Coping with extreme heat: current exposure and implications for the future.

A preview of how effective behavioral, biological and technological responses might be in the future, when outdoor conditions will be at least 2°C hotter than current levels, is available today from studies of individuals already living in extreme heat. In areas where high temperatures are common-particularly those in the hot and humid tropics-several studies report that indoor temperatures in low-income housing can be significantly hotter than those outdoors. A case study indicates that daily indoor heat indexes in almost all the 123 slum dwellings monitored in Kolkata during the summer were

Reducing consequences of extreme heat: The role of weather information access.

This study investigates the impact of weather information sources on consequences associated with extreme heat events, employing a cross-sectional survey conducted on hospitalized individuals who have experienced heat stress in Central Vietnam. Multiple information channels, including official agencies and social media, were found to significantly reduce the Cost of Illness (COI) associated with heat-related ailments. Social media, in particular, emerged as a potent tool for climate adaptation. Improving the clarity and accessibility of weather information through official channels is crucial,

Association of ambient extreme heat with pediatric morbidity: a scoping review.

Global climate change is leading to higher ambient temperatures and more frequent heatwaves. To date, impacts of ambient extreme heat on childhood morbidity have been understudied, although-given children's physiologic susceptibility, with smaller body surface-to-mass ratios, and many years of increasing temperatures ahead-there is an urgent need for better information to inform public health policies and clinical approaches. In this review, we aim to (1) identify pediatric morbidity outcomes previously associated with extreme heat, (2) to identify predisposing co-morbidities which may make ch

Food intake and electrolyte status of ultramarathoners competing in extreme heat.

OBJECTIVE: To relate changes in laboratory indices to dietary intake during extremely prolonged running and to determine if dietary intake influences the ability of runners to finish an 160 km trail race. METHODS: We monitored intake and serum chemistries of 26 runners competing in an 160 km foot race in temperatures which peaked at 38 degrees C. Blood was drawn pre-, mid- and post-race. Dietary intake and incidence of gastrointestinal distress or changes in mental status were determined by interview with runners approximately every 13 km. Twenty-three runners completed at least 88 kms and, o

Trees Reduce Daytime Extreme Urban Heat Risk for People Experiencing Unsheltered Homelessness.

Extreme heat poses growing health risks in U.S. cities, particularly for people experiencing unsheltered homelessness (PEUH) who lack consistent access to indoor cooling. This study assessed personal heat exposure among PEUH in Salt Lake City, Utah, one of the fastest-warming U.S. cities. Eight PEUH carried GPS-enabled smartphones and wearable temperature sensors for six days during a period of extreme summer heat. Nearly 10,000 geolocated heat index observations were intersected with a tree canopy polygon layer to quantify the role of urban tree cover in mitigating heat risk among PEUH. PEUH

Lessons learned from supporting local planning for extreme heat in North Carolina.

The impacts of extreme heat are broad and systemic, affecting not only human health and well-being, but also infrastructure, energy systems, and public services. Many of the best strategies to address these impacts are implemented at the local level, by local governments and their partners. This paper covers the approaches taken by the North Carolina State Resilience Office (SRO), the North Carolina State Climate Office (SCO) and their partners to support the development of heat action plans by local governments in their state. These agencies collaborated to develop planning support resources

Extreme heat and risk of early delivery among preterm and term pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between ambient temperature and risk of delivery is poorly understood. We examined the association between heat and risk of delivery among preterm and term pregnancies with the use of a time-to-event design to minimize bias from seasonal variation in conception rates. METHODS: We used data on 206,929 term and 12,390 preterm singleton live births for Montreal, Canada, from June through September, 1981-2010. The exposure variables were (1) maximum daily temperatures in the week preceding birth and (2) number of consecutive days with temperatures of 32°C or above dur

Burn Out Reimagined: Extreme Heat, Work Disability, and Sociodemographic Disparities in America.

The intersection of climate change and population aging presents challenges for an increasingly older U.S. labor force. Exposure to extreme heat at work is associated with mortality and morbidity, but little is known about how exposure to heat at work relates to work disability, especially among vulnerable subgroups. In this preliminary analysis of work disability and occupational heat exposure, we find that men, Black, and Latino workers ages 50 and older are more likely to work in heat-exposed occupations and to report work disability. We offer policy suggestions for mitigating the impact of

Extreme Heat, Functional Disability, and Social Isolation: Risk Disparity Among Older Adults.

This study examines how functional disability worsens among older adults exposed to extreme heat, particularly those socially isolated. Analyzing data from over 35,000 older adults aged 50 or older from the Health and Retirement Study from 1996-2018, this study found that more frequent exposure to extreme heat is associated with an increase in the number of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) that older adults find difficulty in performing over time. This heat-related disability progression is greater among those living alone and not working. However, findings indicate that maintain

Extreme heat episodes and risk of preterm birth in California, 2005-2013.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is a leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality. Identifying potentially modifiable triggers toward the end of gestation, such as extreme heat, can improve understanding of the role of acute stress on early deliveries and inform warning systems. In this study we examined the association between extreme heat, variously defined during the last week of gestation, and risk of preterm birth among mothers in California. METHODS: We created a population-based cohort comprised of 1,967,300 mothers who had live, singleton births in California, from May through September

Associations between fine particulate matter, extreme heat events, and congenital heart defects.

UNLABELLED: Previous research reports associations between air pollution measured during pregnancy and the occurrence of congenital heart defects (CHDs) in offspring. The objective of this research was to assess if exposure to extreme heat events (EHEs) during pregnancy may modify this association. METHODS: The study population consisted of 4,033 controls and 2,632 cases with dates of delivery between 1999 and 2007 who participated in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a multi-site case-control study in the United States. Daily data from the closest stationary fine particulate matte

The association between extreme heat and sperm quality in a chronically heat-exposed population: An observational study in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: Extreme heat has detrimental effects on male fertility. Previous studies conducted mainly in temperate countries have reported an association between higher ambient temperatures and decreased sperm quality. These findings might not be applicable to populations in tropical regions, who are chronically exposed to high ambient heat. OBJECTIVES: To address this knowledge gap, we measured the association between extreme heat during the spermatogenic life cycle and sperm quality in a population of 914 males who are 21-43 years old residing in a tropical country, Singapore. METHODS: Med

Hot weather and heat extremes: health risks.

Hot ambient conditions and associated heat stress can increase mortality and morbidity, as well as increase adverse pregnancy outcomes and negatively affect mental health. High heat stress can also reduce physical work capacity and motor-cognitive performances, with consequences for productivity, and increase the risk of occupational health problems. Almost half of the global population and more than 1 billion workers are exposed to high heat episodes and about a third of all exposed workers have negative health effects. However, excess deaths and many heat-related health risks are preventable
