Exposure of protected areas in Central America to extreme weather events.

Central America and the Caribbean are regularly battered by megadroughts, heavy rainfall, heat waves, and tropical cyclones. Although 21st-century climate change is expected to increase the frequency, intensity, and duration of these extreme weather events (EWEs), their incidence in regional protected areas (PAs) remains poorly explored. We examined historical and projected EWEs across the region based on 32 metrics that describe distinct dimensions (i.e., intensity, duration, and frequency) of heat waves, cyclones, droughts, and rainfall and compared trends in PAs with trends in unprotected l

The response of small boreal catchments to extreme weather event: Hurricane Larry.

The boreal environment is high in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and iron concentrations. This DOC is enriched in functional groups allowing it to bind strongly with iron and act as a significant source of iron to the coastal and marine environment. As climate change intensifies more extreme weather events will affect the northern hemisphere and boreal environment. These weather events can lead to massive fluxes of material but the impact it will have is currently unknown. Hurricane Larry made landfall on Newfoundland (NL) in 2021 providing an opportunity to investigate how the boreal environm

Association between extreme weather events and postoperative adverse outcomes: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Extreme weather events have been increasing in frequency and intensity globally. Surgical patients may be particularly susceptible to the impact of extreme weather on health outcomes and health care delivery. Our primary objective was to synthesize the available evidence on the association between extreme weather events and postoperative adverse outcomes within thirty days after surgery. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the literature, searching MEDLINE on PubMed®, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews for English-language, full-t

Increasing lifetime exposure to extreme fire weather under climate change in Europe.

Climate change increases fire weather globally. Hot, dry and windy conditions raise the likelihood of fires igniting and spreading and make suppression more challenging. With further warming, fire weather is projected to intensify across Europe, yet implications for today's young generations remain unclear. Here, we analyse lifetime exposure to extreme fire weather across Europe using an ensemble of bias-adjusted and downscaled global climate models. To this end, we developed dem4cli, an open-source Python package that integrates demographic data into climate hazard assessments. We find younge

Melioidosis on the Rise: The Impact of Climate Change and Extreme Weather.

Melioidosis is a bacterial infection caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, primarily a disease in tropical and subtropical regions. The bacteria are typically spread through contaminated soil, water, or air. The incidence of transmission tends to increase during extreme weather conditions. In recent times, there has been a noticeable rise in the frequency and severity of extreme weather events due to global warming. This includes heat waves, storms, cyclones, heavy rainfall, and floods, which have been on the rise. Climate change is expected to increase extreme weather events further and, coupl

Health impacts of extreme weather events - Cascading risks in a changing climate.

BACKGROUND: Extreme weather events represent one of the most tangible impacts of anthropogenic climate change. They have increased in number and severity and a further increase is expected. This is accompanied by direct and indirect negative consequences for human health. METHODS: Flooding events, storms and droughts are analysed here for Germany from a systemic perspective on the basis of a comprehensive literature review. Cascading risks beyond the initial event are also taken into account in order to depict downstream consequences. RESULTS: In addition to the immediate health burdens caus

A whole of government approach to extreme weather in King County, Washington.

Extreme weather, exacerbated by climate change, causes significant health and infrastructure impacts nationally. In Washington State, the devastating 2021 heat dome, winter storms and increases in wildfire smoke have highlighted the inequitable impacts of extreme weather as well as the need for comprehensive resilience planning, ranging from near-term emergency management to long-range community and infrastructure planning. King County, in partnership with local communities, non-profit partners and multiple cities, has endeavoured to increase and diversify extreme weather planning and prepared

Health system adaptation to extreme weather events in Australia: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing prevalence and severity of extreme weather events is likely to present challenges for the systems in which humans operate. This review investigates how the health system in Australia, a region heavily affected by bushfires, floods, droughts and extreme heat, is adapting to the risks presented by extreme weather events and how these adaptations are being evaluated. METHODS: By searching Medline, PsycINFO, Scopus and Web of Science for peer reviewed literature reporting on health system adaptations, 33 articles published between 2014 and 2023 were identified for inc

The effect of different extreme weather events on attitudes toward climate change.

Can exposure to extreme weather change political opinion and preferences about climate change? There is a growing literature on both the effects of extreme weather events and the factors explaining attitudes toward global warming, though there remains no clear consensus about whether being exposed to extreme weather influences public opinion about climate change. We contribute to this literature by studying the impact of a variety of extreme weather events associated with climate variability, including severe storms, floods, fires, and hurricanes, on attitudes toward climate change. Landscape heterogeneity buffers the impact of an extreme weather event on wildlife.

Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, with poorly known consequences for wildlife. In December 2021, an atmospheric river brought record-shattering amounts of rain and snow to interior Alaska, creating conditions expected to cause mass mortality in grazing ungulate populations that need to access ground forage. We characterized snowpack conditions following the storm and used a 36-year monitoring dataset to quantify impacts on caribou (Rangifer tarandus) and their primary predator, wolves (Canis lupus). December precipitation was 7.3 SD above the 99-year mean and 2.5-fold higher t

Household mobility responses to weather extremes in Kyrgyzstan.

Weather extremes increasingly shape human mobility, yet their effects differ across households and locations. We advance understanding of climate-related mobility by distinguishing among four outcomes: domestic mobility, international mobility, combined domestic-international mobility, and immobility, rather than treating mobility as a simple binary choice. Focusing on Kyrgyzstan, a climate-vulnerable mountainous country in Central Asia, we combine nationally representative household panel data from 2013-2022 with high-resolution climate data. Here, we show that weather extremes, both within d

Hot weather and heat extremes: health risks.

Hot ambient conditions and associated heat stress can increase mortality and morbidity, as well as increase adverse pregnancy outcomes and negatively affect mental health. High heat stress can also reduce physical work capacity and motor-cognitive performances, with consequences for productivity, and increase the risk of occupational health problems. Almost half of the global population and more than 1 billion workers are exposed to high heat episodes and about a third of all exposed workers have negative health effects. However, excess deaths and many heat-related health risks are preventable

Building adaptive capacity of US Gulf Coast city practitioners to extreme weather events.

Building city practitioners' capacity to prepare for and respond to climate change-driven events can increase coastal cities' resilience. We conducted a first-of-its-kind mixed methods research project from 2021 to 2023 with 46 US Gulf Coast small and midsize cities to measure the effectiveness of an adaptive capacity-building intervention: a stormwater planning tool called FloodWise Communities (FWC) deployed through the engagement between researchers and practitioners in each city. City practitioners were surveyed preintervention and postintervention between September 2021 and December 2022.

Extreme Weather, Vulnerable Populations, and Mental Health: The Timely Role of AI Interventions.

Environmental disasters are becoming increasingly frequent and severe, disproportionately impacting vulnerable populations who face compounded risks due to intersectional factors such as gender, socioeconomic status, rural residence, and cultural identity. These events exacerbate mental health challenges, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and underserved areas of high-income countries (HICs). Addressing these disparities necessitates inclusive, culturally competent, intersectional, and cost-effecti

Environmental pollution and extreme weather conditions: insights into the effect on mental health.

Environmental pollution exposures, including air, soil, water, light, and noise pollution, are critical issues that may implicate adverse mental health outcomes. Extreme weather conditions, such as hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and droughts, may also cause long-term severe concerns. However, the knowledge about possible psychiatric disorders associated with these exposures is currently not well disseminated. In this review, we aim to summarize the current knowledge on the impact of environmental pollution and extreme weather conditions on mental health, focusing on anxiety spectrum disorders,

When income buffers extreme weather: Impacts on women's mental health in informal settlements.

Climate change threatens mental health, especially for the more than one billion residents in informal settlements worldwide. Utilizing longitudinal data collected from women in households in two of Nairobi's largest informal settlements, we examined the mental health impacts of extreme weather and moderating effects of income. Eighteen monthly surveys (September 2022-February 2024) captured experiences of heat, cold, drought, heavy rain, and flooding alongside symptoms of anxiety and depression. Heat, cold, and drought were associated with increased anxiety and depression while heavy rain red

Age-Related Deficits in Mobility Resilience With an Extreme Weather and Climate Event.

IMPORTANCE: Mobility, defined as the ability to move freely, decreases with increasing age. The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather and climate events (EWCEs), such as hurricanes, pose a considerable risk for older adults (aged ≥65 years) to maintain their mobility (ie, mobility resilience). OBJECTIVE: To examine whether an association exists between older-aged neighborhoods and mobility resilience following an EWCE. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case series study used 2022 demographics with prospectively observed social infrastructure point-of-interest visitation

Converging crises and maternal and child health: colonialism, extreme weather, and COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is a growing threat to human health, particularly in regions facing overlapping environmental hazards and social inequities. Puerto Rico-a U.S. territory with a colonial history-offers a unique case for examining how multiple disasters, including Hurricane Maria, ongoing earthquakes, and the COVID-19 pandemic, interact with structural vulnerabilities to affect maternal and child health. Despite increasing attention to climate-related health outcomes, little is known about the reproductive health impacts of cumulative disaster exposure in colonial contexts. METHODS:

Modelling electrified railway signalling misoperations during extreme space weather events in the UK.

Space weather has the potential to impact ground-based technologies on Earth, affecting many systems including railway signalling. This study uses a recently developed model to analyse the impact of geomagnetically induced currents on railway signalling systems in the United Kingdom during the March 1989 and October 2003 geomagnetic storms. The March 1989 storm is also scaled to estimate a 1-in-100 year and a 1-in-200 year extreme storm. Both the Glasgow to Edinburgh line, and the Preston to Lancaster section of the West Coast Main Line are modelled. No "right side" failures (when unoccupied s
