Glass wool tripod foreign bodies in the eye: first ever reported case series.

We present three cases of unusual corneal/conjunctival foreign bodies that were not visible on standard slit lamp examination. All patients presented with complaints of foreign body sensation in the affected eyes. One patient had visited an ophthalmologist prior to presentation to our center and was diagnosed and treated for conjunctivitis. On slit lamp examination minimal congestion was seen hence, all the patients were diagnosed with conjunctivitis with corneal epithelial defects by the residents. However, because the patients complained of foreign body sensation, fluorescein staining of the

Traumatic eye injuries due to large unusual foreign bodies: a Singapore case series.

PURPOSE: Traumatic eye injuries due to large foreign bodies (FB) are rare. The visual prognosis is often poor in these cases because of severe ocular damage. Staged surgical procedures with eventual enucleation or evisceration are often indicated. METHODS: Case series. RESULTS: The authors describe two patients with eye injury due to large FB with visual acuity of no light perception at presentation. Both had initial repair of the ocular injuries and removal of the FB. One patient with an intraocular FB eventually underwent enucleation; the other, with intraorbital FB, had evisceration as a

Retained foreign body in nose following eye injury.

A man in his 60s presented with diminution of vision of the left eye with nasal bleeding after accidental fall. On examination his left upper eyelid was lacerated and left temporal sclera was punctured which was repaired under local anaesthesia after which he was discharged by ophthalmologists but continued to complain of pain and left nasal obstruction. A non-contrast CT of paranasal sinuses revealed fracture of medial wall of left orbit, left ethmoid haemosinus and a metallic foreign body (FB) in the septum and anterior face of sphenoid. Diagnostic nasal endoscopy performed to remove the met

The effects of a penetrating metallic foreign body on a pseudophakic eye.

The penetration of a pseudophakic eye by a high-speed metallic foreign body is reported. The path of the steel missile was interrupted by the intraocular lens, which was fixed within the capsular remnant, preventing missile penetration into the posterior segment. Although the foreign body was removed from the anterior chamber without immediate sequelae, several months later a peripheral retinal detachment occurred. Prompt recognition and treatment resulted in the retention of excellent pseudophakic vision. The importance of postoperative protective eyewear is emphasized.

Organic Foreign Body in the Eye, a Diagnostic Challenge: A Case of a Wooden, Intra-orbital Foreign Body Presenting at the Emergency Department.

Intra-orbital organic foreign body injuries occur within the eye but without the involvement of the orbit itself. A 39-year-old man self-presented to the emergency department complaining of sudden onset of pain surrounding his left eye and of reduced vision. The initial examination was unremarkable except for two healing lesion marks above his left upper eyelid. Some swelling with erythematous skin changes was also noted. Computer tomography did not identify a conclusive cause. The patient was assessed by an Ophthalmologist in Eye Casualty and commenced intravenous antibiotics for infection se

[The cases of penetrating eye injuries with large intraocular foreign body].

AIM: Three consecutive cases of penetrating eye injuries complicated with large (size 9-12 mm) intraocular foreign body are presented as such. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The initial findings, management, surgical procedures and final anatomical and functional outcomes of each particular case are given. Corneal entrance laceration was seen in all three patients. Second scleral full-thickness eye wall laceration was found just posterior to the horizontal muscle insertions in two eyes. Full-thickness exit posterior eye wall laceration obturated with foreign body was diagnosed in one case. This metall

Corneal laceration and intraocular foreign body in a post-LASIK eye.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of full-thickness corneal laceration and intraocular foreign body in an eye that underwent laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). METHODS: A 43-year-old man underwent uneventful bilateral LASIK. Seventeen months after LASIK, the patient suffered penetrating trauma to the right eye while hammering metal without safety glasses. Examination on the night of the injury showed an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/30 in the right eye. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy showed a 2.4-mm full-thickness peripheral corneal laceration at the 11-o'clock position extending over the ed

Spontaneous foreign body extrusion following perforating eye injury.

A structured approach to the management of a perforating ballistic eye injury is illustrated in this case, where initial treatment was limited to simple corneal wound closure and antibiotic prophylaxis. A pellet had passed completely through the globe but the retina remained attached, and it was decided to manage the case conservatively. Two retained foreign bodies were extruded spontaneously some months after the injury when suture removal and delayed cataract surgery led to a virtually perfect visual outcome. The patient has had no further complications at least three years after initial inj

[Possible computed tomographic and magnetic resonance tomographic detection of wood foreign bodies following perforating eye injuries].

After perforating eye injury the retention of a foreign body in the orbits has to be excluded. Wooden foreign bodies mostly have negative density on CT, which increases later as a result of granulomatous changes. On MRI, pieces of wood appear with low signal intensity, and only in some cases is a collar-shaped structure recognizable, allowing differentiation from gas. Soon after orbital trauma with splinters of wood, therefore CT allows better differentiation of pieces of wood from intraorbital gas by measurement of their density, whereas MRI, makes it possible to demonstrate wooden foreign bo

Managing corneal foreign body injuries in a primary eye care setting.

Corneal foreign body removal is a common office-based procedure conducted by primary eye care practitioners globally. In Australia and New Zealand, optometry is a therapeutic profession capable of removing embedded corneal foreign bodies. In Australia, it has been estimated that ocular foreign bodies account for more than 44% of eye-related presentations to a hospital emergency department. Studies have shown that the majority of these patients can be effectively managed by the community optometrist, reducing the burden on hospital admissions. Regardless of the setting, the use of standardised ter

[Ocular metallosis : when a tiny foreign body oxidises a whole eye !].

Ocular metallosis is a rare ophthalmologic condition characterized by alterations of all intraocular structures in the setting of a metallic intraocular foreign body. There are two main types: ocular siderosis - the most frequent and most deleterious - and ocular chalcosis. The lesions can lead to total functional loss of the affected eye. We report the case of a young man presenting a late-stage ocular siderosis, for whom surgical removal of the foreign body did not result in functional recovery, given the end-stage lesions. We then summarize the pathophysiological, diagnostic and therapeutic

Endophthalmitis, Visual Outcomes, and Management Strategies in Eyes with Intraocular Foreign Bodies.

PURPOSE: Ocular trauma with intraocular foreign body (IOFB) can have devastating visual consequences. Management and antimicrobial strategies remain variable due to the infrequency and heterogeneity of presentation. Our goal was to identify risk factors for endophthalmitis and poor visual outcomes in cases of IOFB and investigate management strategies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted in 88 eyes of 88 patients suffering traumatic injury with IOFB at the University of Michigan between January 2000 and December 2019. Medical records were reviewed to characterize
