Central bouquet hemorrhage with Henle fiber layer extension in myopic eyes.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical and multimodal imaging features of central bouquet hemorrhage (CBH) with Henle fiber layer (HFL) involvement in highly myopic eyes, and to investigate the relationships between hemorrhage characteristics, reabsorption time, and visual outcomes. METHODS: Multicenter, retrospective analysis of highly myopic eyes with CBH involving the HFL, confirmed by optical coherence tomography (OCT). RESULTS: Eighteen eyes from 18 subjects were included for analysis. The mean age of the cohort was 39 ± 13.7 years (range: 17-69) and 61% of subjects were female. Mean r

Characteristics of Central Visual Field Progression in Eyes with Optic Disc Hemorrhage.

PURPOSE: To investigate the characteristics and rate of central visual field loss after optic disc hemorrhage (DH). DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: Three hundred forty-three eyes of 220 subjects who had ≥3 years of follow-up with a minimum of 5 visits with 10-2 and 24-2 visual field (VF) were recruited. Rates of 10-2 mean deviation (MD) loss in each hemifield and predefined zones were compared using linear mixed-effects models in DH and non-DH eyes. Clustered pointwise regression analysis was also used to define central VF progressors and compared with 24-2 VF loss using guided pr

Multiple brain hemorrhages and hematomas associated with ectopic fascioliasis in brain and eye.

BACKGROUND: Fascioliasis is a parasitic infection caused by Fasciola hepatica. Human beings can be infected accidentally by an ingestion of the metacercariae; and the parasite exists almost persistently in the bile ducts, but rarely in other organs. We report an interesting case of ectopic fascioliasis in both the brain and the right eye of a school-aged boy, which was associated with 2 unruptured intracranial aneurysms. To our knowledge, no case report such as this has been found in the medical literature. CASE DESCRIPTION: After an ingestion of Potamon denticulata (a fresh crab) for 4 month

Intrapapillary hemorrhage with adjacent peripapillary subretinal hemorrhage of both eyes after COVID-19 infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intrapapillary hemorrhage with adjacent peripapillary subretinal hemorrhage is commonly observed in myopia with tilted optic disc. It presents with typical features on the fundus and follows a self-limiting course. However, due to its complex etiology, clinicians sometimes lack sufficient understanding of it which can easily lead to misdiagnosis or overtreatment. In this case report, we describe a rare case of intrapapillary hemorrhage with adjacent peripapillary subretinal hemorrhage in both eyes. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old female who has no past medical history experience

Radiomics Versus the Human Eye: Rethinking SEBES for Prognostic Stratification in Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) carries high morbidity and mortality. The Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Early Brain Edema Score (SEBES) and its extended version SEBES 6c are computed tomography (CT)-based markers of early brain edema, but their prognostic value remains uncertain. Radiomics enables quantitative characterization of imaging features beyond the visual assessment. Our objective was to compare the predictive performance of SEBES, SEBES 6c, a radiomic SEBES surrogate, and outcome-specific radiomic models for functional outcome, vasospasm, and hydrocephalus after aSAH.

Association between eye position on brain scan and hospital mortality in acute intracerebral hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Conjugate eye deviation (CED) and horizontal skew deviation are often seen in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), but its prognostic significance is unclear. In this study, the association between brain scan assessed eye position and hospital mortality in patients with supratentorial ICH was tested. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed in 316 patients with supratentorial ICH. Eye position was measured on first brain computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Patients with CED, horizontal skew deviation or no deviation were distinguished. Th

Comparative analysis of axial length measurement method for eyes with submacular hemorrhage.

PURPOSE: To identify a method for comparing preoperative axial length (AL) measurements with postoperative AL in submacular hemorrhage (SMH). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective. METHODS: This study included 30 patients who underwent vitrectomy for SMH (January 2016-January 2023) with preoperative and postoperative AL data. Preoperative AL was obtained using ultrasonography for the affected eye (aUS-AL) and compared to those measured using optical biometry (OB) for the affected and fellow eyes (aOB-AL and fOB-AL, respectively). Postoperative AL (aPost-AL) was defined as the AL of the affected eye by

Betacellulin overexpression in transgenic mice causes disproportionate growth, pulmonary hemorrhage syndrome, and complex eye pathology.

The EGF family comprises a network of ligands and receptors that regulate proper development and elicit diverse functions in physiology and pathology. Betacellulin (BTC) is a rather poorly characterized member of the EGF family whose in vivo effects have been linked mainly to endocrine pancreas, intestine, and mammary gland function. In vitro studies revealed that this growth factor is a potent mitogen for diverse cell types and suggested unique receptor-binding properties. Genetic ablation of BTC in mice yielded a mild phenotype, probably because of opportunistic compensation by other EGF rec

The Eyes Do not Lie: A Case of Bilateral Subconjunctival Hemorrhages and Orbital Hematoma Postpartum.

Subconjunctival hemorrhages are common in trauma and with increased intra-abdominal pressure. Despite the sustained pressure endured while pushing, they are rarely observed postpartum and can be an indicator of underlying ophthalmic disease. We present a case of a postpartum patient who developed bilateral subconjunctival hemorrhages with a retro-orbital hematoma. The patient is a 29-year-old gravida-1-para-0 at 41 weeks gestation who underwent an uncomplicated induction and delivery. She developed diplopia and orbital pain postpartum. Imaging revealed an orbital hematoma with an ophthalmologi

Effect of Antiplatelet/Anticoagulant Use on Glaucoma Progression in Eyes With Optic Disc Hemorrhage.

PURPOSE: To assess whether the use of antiplatelets (APs)/anticoagulants (ACs) affects glaucoma progression in eyes with optic disc hemorrhage (DH). METHODS: One hundred and nineteen eyes from 119 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma in whom a DH was observed at least once during the follow-up period (mean follow-up duration: 6.2 y) were included in this retrospective observational study. Cox proportional hazard models were used to identify the association between putative factors, including AP/AC use, and glaucoma progression. Glaucoma progression was assessed on the basis of changes no

Long-term prognosis of eyes having had operative suprachoroidal expulsive hemorrhage.

We reviewed the charts of 15 patients having had an operative suprachoroidal expulsive hemorrhage (SEH) at least 5 years prior to the time of review. In all cases the eyes were glaucomatous. All SEH occurred in close association with the surgery, with 14 cases occurring at the time of surgery and 1 case developing within 2 days of the procedure. Three eyes were markedly worse following the SEH, losing six or more lines of vision; in all cases this loss was due to retinal detachment. In a fourth eye in which a retinal detachment occurred postoperatively, fair acuity (20/100) was preserved. The

Spontaneous Resolution of Delayed Suprachoroidal Hemorrhage in the Single Eye Following Needling in Congenital Glaucoma.

INTRODUCTION: Suprachoroidal hemorrhage (SCH) is a rare, but potentially vision-threatening event with poor long-term visual prognosis. At present, there is disagreement whether surgical intervention or conservative treatment is superior in the management. We report on a case of spontaneous resolution of severe SCH after needling procedure in the only eye of a young patient with congenital glaucoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old woman with congenital glaucoma was scheduled for bleb needling in her only eye. Preoperative best-corrected visual acuity was 20/40 and intraocular pressure 20 mm
