BACKGROUND: Ocular infections can harm the eye's anatomic structure on numerous levels. They are a global health issue. Endophthalmitis, a serious complication following cataract surgery, can result in substantial ocular morbidity and vision loss despite the administration of antibiotics. Bacterial ocular flora are the primary causative agents. This study aimed to assess the types of bacterial isolates on the external ocular surface and evaluate their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns in pre-operative cataract patients at Kafrelsheikh University Hospitals.
METHODS: This cross-sectional st

Bacterial conjunctivitis appears to resolve more rapidly when treated with appropriate topical antimicrobial agents. In this multicenter, randomized, double-blind study of efficacy and safety, patients with presumed bacterial external eye infections were assigned to topical therapy with 0.3% norfloxacin or 0.3% tobramycin. A total of 120 patients were enrolled. Of the total, 65 had documented bacterial infections and were evaluable; 59 of these patients had bacterial conjunctivitis. All of the patients with documented infections were cured or improved regardless of the drug treatment regimen o

Ocular infections can be medical emergencies that result in permanent visual impairment or blindness and loss of quality of life. Bacteria are a major cause of ocular infections. Effective treatment of ocular infections requires knowledge of which bacteria are the likely cause of the infection. This survey of ocular bacterial isolates and review of ocular pathogens is based on a survey of a collection of isolates banked over a ten-year span at the Dean McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma. These findings illustrate the diversity of bacteria isolated from the eye, ranging from common species to rare

The eye is highly susceptible to inflammation-induced tissue damage; however, the mechanisms that drive inflammation resolution during ocular infections remain unclear. In this study, we utilize a murine model of intraocular bacterial infection (S. aureus-induced endophthalmitis) and lipidomics analysis to uncover a critical role of pro-resolving lipid mediators, particularly resolvin D1 (RvD1), in resolving inflammation and restoring ocular tissue homeostasis and vision. RvD1 protects mouse eyes from severe endophthalmitis by enhancing bacterial clearance, suppressing intraocular inflammation

Bacterial biofilm infections are difficult to eradicate because of antibiotic insusceptibility and high recurrence rates. Biofilm formation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a leading cause of bacterial keratitis, is facilitated by the bacterial Psl exopolysaccharide and associated with heightened virulence. Using intravital microscopy, we observed that neutrophilic recruitment to corneal infections limits P. aeruginosa biofilms to the outer eye surface, preventing bacterial dissemination. Neutrophils moved to the base of forming biofilms, where they underwent neutrophil extracellular trap formation

Two fluoroquinolone antibiotics, ciprofloxacin (Ciloxan-Alcon) and ofloxacin (Exocin-Allergan), are available in the UK as topical preparations for the eye. Ciprofloxacin eyedrops are licensed for the treatment of "corneal ulcers and superficial infections of the eye", and ofloxacin eyedrops for "external ocular infections (such as conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis)". In the UK chloramphenicol is commonly recommended as the drug of first choice for the treatment of superficial bacterial eye infections. Do fluoroquinolone preparations offer any advantage over this or other established dru

Ocular infections may arise spontaneously or following penetrating globe injury or operation, such as corneal transplant or cataract extraction. Treatment and prophylaxis of bacterial infections using antibiotic eye drops requires a strict dosing regimen to avoid irreversible vision loss. At present, moxifloxacin eye drops are prescribed for use multiple times per day, leading to patient non-adherence, the emergence of bacterial resistance, and infection progression. The desire to avoid sub-lethal antibiotic dosing and visual impairment through inconsistent eye drop application motivates the d

Bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic pathogens all cause systemic infection and can spread to the eye. Dissemination of pathogens via the bloodstream can lead to direct involvement of the eye. Visual loss is common in bacterial or fungal endophthalmitis, and toxoplasmosis is a major cause of ocular morbidity and poor vision after congenital or acquired infection. Some infections cause intraocular damage by indirect mechanisms (eg, HIV-mediated immunosuppression), leading to opportunistic infections such as cytomegalovirus infection, periocular nerve involvement due to leprosy, and hypersens

PURPOSE: Trachoma is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. Conjunctival scarring is initiated by recurrent Chlamydia trachomatis infection. However, disease progression to trichiasis occurs even in regions where chlamydial prevalence is currently low, which suggests that other factors, for example other bacterial infection, may also drive inflammation and scarring, particularly in the late stages of trachoma. This study was undertaken to investigate whether trachomatous trichiasis or conjunctival scarring are associated with increased prevalence of bacterial infection.

We retrospectively reviewed literature reports on pathogens, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and clinical and visual outcomes in patients with bacterial scleritis over the past decade. Eye surgery and trauma are the most common causes of bacterial infections. Subtenon triamcinolone acetonide injection, intravitreal ranibizumab, and wearing contact lenses are also causes of bacterial scleritis. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most common pathogenic microorganism causing bacterial scleritis. Mycobacterium tuberculosis ranks second. The main symptoms of bacterial scleritis are red and pain

Intraocular infections are prevalent after traumatic injuries or after common ocular surgeries. Infections cause inflammation that can damage the retina and architecture of the eye, often resulting in poor visual outcomes. Severe cases may result in blindness or require enucleation of the eye. Treatments for intraocular infections include intravitreal antibiotics and corticosteroids or surgical vitrectomy in serious cases. The increase in multidrug-resistant infections calls for novel treatment options. In the present study, a biomimetic erythrocyte-derived nanosponge was tested for the abilit

Staphylococcus aureus is a major pathogen of the eye able to infect the tear duct, eyelid, conjunctiva, cornea, anterior and posterior chambers, and the vitreous chamber. Of these infections, those involving the cornea (keratitis) or the inner chambers of the eye (endophthalmitis) are the most threatening because of their potential to cause a loss in visual acuity or even blindness. Each of these ocular sites is protected by the constitutive expression of a variety of antimicrobial factors and these defenses are augmented by a protective host response to the organism. Such infections often inv

Empirical use of antibiotics in the treatment of eye infections leads to bacterial pathogens becoming resistant to antibiotics; consequently, treatment failure and eye health complications occur. The aim of this study was to describe the phenotype and genotype of the resistance and adherence of bacterial agents causing eye infections in patients at Hospital Juárez de México. An observational, prospective, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was carried out in patients with signs and symptoms of ocular infection. Bacterial agents were isolated and identified by classical microbiology and mas
