Unraveling eye movement-related eardrum oscillations (EMREOs): how saccade direction and tympanometric measurements relate to their amplitude and time course.

Eye movement-related eardrum oscillations (EMREOs) reflect movements of the tympanic membrane that scale with the magnitude and direction of saccades. EMREOs have been consistently described in humans and non-human primates, yet many questions regarding this phenomenon remain unresolved. Based on bilateral in-ear recordings in human participants we here explore several properties of these EMREOs in order to improve our understanding of this signal's origin and functional significance. Our data support that the EMREO time course is comparable between the left and right ears, and between paradig

Advanced Eye Movement Features Measured by Quantitative Oculography as Candidate Biomarkers for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

Conventional qualitative eye movement examinations may miss subtle abnormalities, complicating early and accurate diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Quantitative oculography, represented by video-oculography (VOG), provides an objective digital assessment of eye movements. This review summarizes abnormalities in advanced eye movement tasks in PSP, including prosaccades (ProSs), antisaccades (ASs), memory-guided saccades (MGSs), predictive saccades (PSs), overlap saccades (OSs) and gap saccades (GSs), and considers their underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. Eye movement measures of word-level and text-level fluency in disordered reading: A comparison of schizophrenia and dyslexia.

Deficits in language processing, executive functioning, and oculomotor control have been extensively reported in schizophrenia, all of which are crucial for skilled reading. However, only recently have studies identified reading impairments in schizophrenia, including more effortful eye movement reading behaviour relative to controls. Notably, similar deficits across these domains have also been reported in dyslexia (reviewed in Whitford et al., 2018). Given this overlap in reading-related systems, a recent eye-tracking study from our group directly compared global (sentence-level) reading beh

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder characterized by significant cognitive and neurobiological alterations. Impairments in cognitive function and eye movement have been known to be promising biomarkers for schizophrenia. However, cognitive assessment methods require specialized expertise. To date, data on simplified measurement tools for assessing both cognitive function and eye movement in patients with schizophrenia are lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the efficacy of a novel tablet-based platform combining cognitive and eye movement measures for classifying

Scratching your tête over language-switched idioms: Evidence from eye-movement measures of reading.

Idioms are semantically non-compositional multiword units whose meanings often go beyond literal interpretations of their component words (e.g., break the ice, kick the bucket, spill the beans). According to hybrid models of idiom processing, idioms are subject to both direct retrieval from the lexicon in early stages of processing, and word-by-word compositional reanalysis in later stages of comprehension. However, a less clear aspect is how disrupting an idiom's canonical form, and thus its direct retrieval, impacts the time course of comprehension. In this eye-tracking reading study, health

Using saccadic eye movements as objective measures of tolerance in methadone dependent individuals during the hydromorphone challenge test.

Substitute methadone prescribing is one of the main modes of treatment for opiate dependence. This study examined the relationship between methadone dose (measured by daily dose and methadone's active (R)-enantiomer blood levels) and opiate receptor function. Nine subjects on substitute methadone (30 - 90 mg daily) received three subcutaneous injections 1.5 hours apart (saline, 5 mg and 10 mg hydromorphone, a short-acting opiate agonist) followed by measures of functional response in particular saccadic eye movements (SEMs), as well as self-report measures. Ten mg of hydromorphone significantl

Eye movement and pupillary response abnormalities measured using virtual reality as biomarkers in the diagnosis of early-stage Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Characteristic ocular symptoms are expected to serve as potential biomarkers for early diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, possible ocular impairments in PD patients are rarely studied. The study aimed to investigate eye movement characteristics and pupil diameter changes in early-stage PD patients using virtual reality (VR)-based system and explore their contribution in the diagnosis of early-stage PD. METHODS: Forty-three early-stage PD patients and 25 healthy controls were included. Eye movements and pupillary response of all subjects were recorded and evaluated by w

A digital measure of eye movements during reading sensitively captures oculomotor and speech dysfunction, early changes, and disease progression in ataxias.

OBJECTIVE: Sensitive behavioral measures are needed for clinical trials in ataxias and other neurodegenerative diseases. We hypothesized that quantitative analysis of eye movements during a natural multi-component task (passage reading) could produce a measure capable of capturing subclinical signs and disease progression. METHODS: Binocular gaze sampled at 1000 Hz was collected from 102 individuals with ataxia (including 36 spinocerebellar ataxias, 12 Friedreich's ataxia, and 5 multiple system atrophy) and 70 healthy controls. Longitudinal data were available for 26 participants with ataxia

Saccadic eye movement characteristics in adult Niemann-Pick Type C disease: relationships with disease severity and brain structural measures.

Niemann-Pick Type C disease (NPC) is a rare genetic disorder of lipid metabolism. A parameter related to horizontal saccadic peak velocity was one of the primary outcome measures in the clinical trial assessing miglustat as a treatment for NPC. Neuropathology is widespread in NPC, however, and could be expected to affect other saccadic parameters. We compared horizontal saccadic velocity, latency, gain, antisaccade error percentage and self-paced saccade generation in 9 adult NPC patients to data from 10 age-matched controls. These saccadic measures were correlated with appropriate MRI-derived

Pupillary Light Reflex and Eye Movement Parameters as Objective Measures of Cognitive Decline in Older Adults: A Secondary Analysis of a Multimodal Public Dataset.

Background: Early and objective identification of cognitive decline in aging populations remains a clinical challenge. Pupillary light reflex (PLR) and eye movement parameters represent non-invasive, quantitative biomarkers of autonomic and central nervous system integrity, yet their diagnostic utility for cognitive impairment in community-dwelling older adults, particularly in those with mild or borderline impairment (predominantly GDS-Stage 2), remains underexplored. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed 383 community-dwelling older adults (mean age 69.78 ± 6.29 years; 68.7% female).

Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder and its relation to Parkinson's disease: The potential of graph measures as brain biomarkers to identify the underlying physiopathology of the disorder.

Rapid eye movement behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia characterized by the loss of skeletal muscle atonia during the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep phase. On the other hand, idiopathic RDB (iRBD) is considered the prelude of the various α-synucleinopathies, including Parkinson's disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies and multiple system atrophy. Consequently, over 40% of patients eventually develop PD. Recent neuroimaging studies utilizing structural magnetic resonance imaging (s-MRI), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with graph theoretic

Periodicity of a noninvasive measure of cardiac vagal tone during non-rapid eye movement sleep in non-sleep deprived and sleep-deprived normal subjects.

Cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) of microarousals reported in EEG studies is now regarded as an integrating mechanism for the different parts of the central nervous system including the autonomic system. A recently developed continuous index of cardiac parasympathetic activity (CIPA) can be time locked to the EEG allowing the relationship between EEG and autonomic changes to be studied in sleep. Eleven normal subjects were studied for evidence of periodicity in CIPA in non-REM sleep, five of whom had been sleep deprived. Fast Fourier's transformation of the CIPA data confirmed its periodicity

Ocular motor assessment in concussion: Current status and future directions.

Mild head injury such as concussions and subconcussive repetitive impact may lead to subtle changes in brain function and it is imperative to find sensitive and reliable tests to detect such changes. Tests involving the visual system, in particular eye movements, can incorporate higher cortical functioning and involve diffuse pathways in the brain, including many areas susceptible to head impact. With concussions, the clinical neuro-ophthalmic exam is important for detecting abnormalities in vergence, saccades, pursuit, and visual fixation. On the sidelines, the King-Devick test has been used

Naturalistic Eye Movement Tasks in Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Eye tracking assessments in the laboratory have previously highlighted clear differences in eye movements between Parkinson's disease (PD) and healthy aging. However, laboratory-based eye movement tasks are artificial and limit the ecological validity of observed results. Eye movement tasks utilizing more naturalistic scenarios may provide more accurate insight into cognitive function but research in this area is limited. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to ascertain what naturalistic tasks have revealed about oculomotor deficits in PD and what this information may help us u

Fixational eye movements: Implications for applied and clinical assessments.

Clinicians can use fixational eye movements to gain more information about the state of their patients: these measures have great potential as biomarkers of health conditions and might facilitate the early and differential diagnosis of disease. Objective measurements of fixational eye movements are also increasingly used to quantify fatigue and other traits or symptoms. However, the validity of such assessments depends on our ability to identify and control for factors that potentially alter fixational eye movements and that thereby may confound the results. Because eye movements can drive neu
