Eye movements in neurodegenerative diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Abnormalities of oculomotor control accompany the pathological changes underlying many neurodegenerative diseases. Clinical examination of eye movements can contribute to differential diagnosis, whereas quantitative laboratory measures can provide detailed insight into the disease process. In this review of eye movements in neurodegenerative disease, we summarise recent empirical findings and conceptual advances. RECENT FINDINGS: Oculomotor researchers continue to be particularly prolific in studying Parkinson's disease but there is also substantial activity in Alzheimer's

Disorders of vergence eye movements.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim is to re-interpret disorders of vergence in the light of recent studies that view disjunctive eye movements as but one component of three-dimensional gaze control. RECENT FINDINGS: Most natural eye movements combine vergence with saccades, pursuit and vestibular eye movements. Electrophysiological studies in epileptic patients, as well as evidence from monkeys, indicate that frontal and parietal cortex govern vergence as a component of three-dimensional gaze. Clinicians apply Hering's law of equal innervation to interpret disjunctive movements as the superposition o

Eye movements in cocaine abusers.

Using electro-oculography, we quantitatively investigated eye movements in nine heavy cocaine abusers and three groups of controls. Plasma levels of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), a major metabolite of brain norepinephrine, in cocaine abusers were reduced to an average of 53% of normal. Cocaine abusers had normal smooth pursuit, optokinetic nystagmus, vestibulo-ocular reflex, visual suppression of the vestibulo-ocular reflex, and caloric nystagmus. Data were suggestive of a significant reduction in the degree of immediate enhancement of visual-vestibulo-ocular reflex gain by magnified

Eye movements in ataxia-telangiectasia.

The spectrum of eye movement disorders in six patients with ataxia-telangiectasia at different stages of progression was assessed quantitatively by electrooculography. All patients demonstrated abnormalities of voluntary and involuntary saccades. The youngest and least involved patient had significantly increased reaction times of voluntary saccades, but normal accuracy and velocity. The other patients demonstrated increased reaction times and marked hypometria of horizontal and vertical voluntary saccades. Saccade velocity remained normal. Vestibular and optokinetic fast components (involunta

Pigeons make slow, divergent eye movements during flight and large, convergent eye movements when landing.

As animals move through the world, images of surfaces and edges in the environment move across the retina, a visual signal known as optic flow.1 Optic flow is beneficial for several processes, perhaps most notably navigation,2 but it poses a conundrum. When faced with optic flow, the optomotor body, head, and eye movements reflexively minimize optic flow to maintain a stable retinal image.3 This retinal image stabilization is essential for normal visual function.4,5 How then can an animal move through the world yet maintain a stable retinal image? Birds are known for their remarkable head stab

Do eye movements reflect readers' thoughts during reading? Evidence from multidimensional experience sampling and eye movements.

While reading narrative texts, readers' attention often fluctuates from the text (e.g., immersion) to text-unrelated thoughts (e.g., mind-wandering). Research on mind-wandering and immersion suggests that they influence the reading process differently. In this article, we examine the types of thoughts readers have while reading a literary text. Specifically, we investigated the effect of immersion and mind-wandering on eye-movement behaviour during reading. Fifty-six participants read extracts from a novel while their eye-movements were monitored. Participants' thoughts were probed using multi

ECEM (Eye Closure, Eye Movements): application to depersonalization disorder.

Eye Closure, Eye Movements (ECEM) is a hypnotically-based approach to treatment that incorporates eye movements adapted from the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) protocol in conjunction with hypnosis for the treatment of depersonalization disorder. Depersonalization Disorder has been differentiated from post-traumatic stress disorders and has recently been conceptualized as a subtype of panic disorder (Baker et al., 2003; David, Phillips, Medford, & Sierra, 2004; Segui et. al., 2000). During ECEM, while remaining in a hypnotic state, clients self-generated six to seven tria

[A neonate with abnormal eye movements].

Few hours after birth, a neonate showed abnormal eye movements with episodes of downward gazing with a vertical nystagmus. Electrolytes were normal and CRP was low. Cerebral ultrasound and amplitude integrated electroencephalography showed no abnormalities. The abnormal eye movements resolved spontaneously. The infant was diagnosed with paroxysmal tonic downgaze of infancy.

Functional positional eye and eyelid movements.

BACKGROUND: Positional manoeuvres are an important part of the neurological examination, particularly in patients with vertigo where the presence and characteristics of provoked nystagmus can help differentiate central from peripheral neurological disorders. METHODS: Case series of functional positional eye and eyelid movements. RESULTS: We report four patients with functional eye and eyelid movements provoked during positional manoeuvres. The range of abnormalities observed included positional convergence spasm, brief functional saccadic oscillations, and excessive positional blinking mimic

Vergence eye movements in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: With respect to bipolar disorder (BD), previous research have demonstrated saccadic eye movements abnormalities, manifested mainly as an increase in reaction time (latency) in both prosaccadic and antisaccadic task. So far, there were no studies related to vergence eye movements in subjects with BD. Our primary aim was to evaluate vergence tracking performance in this clinical group. METHODS: 30 patients with BD in remission and 23 healthy controls were enrolled. Subjects underwent optometric examination where near point of convergence was measured by the use of Wolff Wand. Fixational eye movements in Tourette syndrome.

Studies of saccadic eye movements in subjects with Tourette syndrome (TS) have provided additional evidence that there is a link between TS symptoms and deficits in fronto-striato-thalamic networks. These studies revealed impaired timing and inhibition of saccades. We compared fixational eye movements, such as microsaccades and ocular drifts, in subjects with TS and healthy controls. We measured horizontal and vertical eye positions with video-oculography in 14 subjects with Tourette syndrome. We found reduced microsaccade amplitude but increased time between adjacent microsaccades (intersaccad

Saccadic Eye Movements in Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) has a mortality rate among the highest of any mental illness, though the factors involved in the condition remain unclear. Recently, the potential neurobiological underpinnings of the condition have become of increasing interest. Saccadic eye movement tasks have proven useful in our understanding of the neurobiology of some other psychiatric illnesses as they utilise known brain regions, but to date have not been examined in AN. The aim of this study was to investigate whether individuals with AN differ from healthy individuals in performance on a range of sac

Brain-machine interface for eye movements.

A number of studies in tetraplegic humans and healthy nonhuman primates (NHPs) have shown that neuronal activity from reach-related cortical areas can be used to predict reach intentions using brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) and therefore assist tetraplegic patients by controlling external devices (e.g., robotic limbs and computer cursors). However, to our knowledge, there have been no studies that have applied BMIs to eye movement areas to decode intended eye movements. In this study, we recorded the activity from populations of neurons from the lateral intraparietal area (LIP), a cortical no

Fixational eye movements and binocular vision.

During attempted visual fixation, small involuntary eye movements-called fixational eye movements-continuously change of our gaze's position. Disagreement between the left and right eye positions during such motions can produce diplopia (double vision). Thus, the ability to properly coordinate the two eyes during gaze fixation is critical for stable perception. For the last 50 years, researchers have studied the binocular characteristics of fixational eye movements. Here we review classical and recent studies on the binocular coordination (i.e., degree of conjugacy) of each fixational eye move

Eye movements in ephedrone-induced parkinsonism.

Patients with ephedrone parkinsonism (EP) show a complex, rapidly progressive, irreversible, and levodopa non-responsive parkinsonian and dystonic syndrome due to manganese intoxication. Eye movements may help to differentiate parkinsonian syndromes providing insights into which brain networks are affected in the underlying disease, but they have never been systematically studied in EP. Horizontal and vertical eye movements were recorded in 28 EP and compared to 21 Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, and 27 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects using standardized oculomotor tasks with infrar

Object recognition during foveating eye movements.

We studied how saccadic and smooth pursuit eye movements affect the recognition of briefly presented letters appearing within the eye movement target. First we compared the recognition performance during steady-state pursuit and during fixation. Single letters were presented for seven different durations ranging from 10 to 400 ms and four contrast levels ranging from 5% to 40%. For both types of eye movements the recognition rates increased with duration and contrast, but they were on average 11% lower during pursuit. In daily life humans use a combination of saccadic and smooth pursuit eye mo

Dissociated eye movements: a clinical study.

CONCLUSIONS: Dissociation of eye movements is an important sign of functional or organic lesions of the central vestibular system. Qualitative differences in the movements of each eye appear to be more serious than quantitative differences. OBJECTIVE: To determine the significance of dissociated nystagmus in neurotological diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eye movements were recorded separately for each eye during the neurotological examination of patients with a suspicion of central vestibular system involvement. RESULTS: Of 137 patients, 38 had quantitative dissociation of eye movements an
