Facial expression recognition system is an advanced technology that allows machines to recognize human emotions based on their facial expressions. In order to develop a robust prediction model, this research work proposes three distinct architectural models to produce a facial expression prediction system that looks like this: The first model is on using a support vector machine to carry out a classification task. As a follow-up to the second model, an attempt was made to create a Convolution Neural Network (CNN) using the VGG-NET (Visual Geometry Group Network). Following analysis of the resu

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Facial expression recognition technology will play an increasingly important role in our daily life. Autonomous driving, virtual reality and all kinds of robots integrated into our life depend on the development of facial expression recognition technology. Many tasks in the field of computer vision are based on deep learning technology and convolutional neural network. The paper proposes an occluded expression recognition model based on the generated countermeasure network. The model is divided into two modules, namely, occluded face image restoration and face recogni

Reading the non-verbal cues from faces to infer the emotional states of others is central to our daily social interactions from very early in life. Despite the relatively well-documented ontogeny of facial expression recognition in infancy, our understanding of the development of this critical social skill throughout childhood into adulthood remains limited. To this end, using a psychophysical approach we implemented the QUEST threshold-seeking algorithm to parametrically manipulate the quantity of signals available in faces normalized for contrast and luminance displaying the six emotional ex

Meta-analyses have found that people high in psychopathy categorize (or "recognize") others' prototypical facial emotion expressions with reduced accuracy. However, these have been contested with remaining questions regarding the strength, specificity, and mechanisms of this ability in psychopathy. In addition, few studies have tested holistically whether psychopathy is related to reduced facial mimicry or autonomic arousal in response to others' dynamic facial expressions. Therefore, the current study presented 6 s videos of a target person making prototypical emotion expressions (anger, fear

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential influence of muscular capacity and facial morphology on facial expressions in children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 40 healthy children (ages 9-13), without previous orthodontic treatment. Masseter muscle thickness and anthropometric facial proportions were measured using ultrasound and digital calipers respectively. A three-dimensional infrared face-tracking system was used to register facial expressions. The maximal amplitude of smile and lip pucker (representing maximal lateral and medial commissure movement) were u

At present, in the medical field 40-point method and facial nerve grading system are generally used for evaluation of facial palsy. However, these methods have limitation in the precise evaluation, because of subjectivity in diagnosis. Purpose of This work is to propose quantitative evaluation of facial palsy based on the amount of movements of the feature point on the face. Facial nerve symptoms generally appear in either side of the face. In facial expression movement, the motion in the palsy side becomes smaller than that of the healthy side. We defined some indices of palsy grade obtained

One of the most important means of communicating emotions is by facial expressions. About 30-40 years ago, several studies examined patients with right and left hemisphere strokes for deficits in expressing and comprehending emotional facial expressions. The participants with right- or left-hemispheric strokes attempted to determine if two different actors were displaying the same or different emotions, to name the different emotions being displayed, and to select the face displaying an emotion named by the examiner. Investigators found that the right hemisphere-damaged group was impaired on a

The observation that emotional expressions are more intense on the left side of the face is consistent with other evidence of the importance of the right hemisphere in emotional communication. However, the question has been raised whether it is truly spontaneous emotional expressions or only posed facial displays that show a left-sided asymmetry. We surreptitiously examined facial asymmetry during spontaneous emotional expressions as subjects remembered happy or sad experiences. These were contrasted with the subjects' posed expressions of happy or sad emotions. Both of these procedures result

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of orthognathic surgical correction of facial asymmetry and maxillary hypoplasia on the magnitude and pattern of facial expressions.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was carried out on 2 cohorts of patients: in group 1, 10 patients had surgical correction of facial asymmetry; in group 2, 13 patients had Le Fort I osteotomy to correct maxillary hypoplasia. The patients were asked to perform 3 facial expressions (maximal smile, lip purse, and cheek puff) that were recorded using the Di4D image-capture system before and after surgery. The

Though superficially symmetrical, the human face expresses emotion asymmetrically. Darwin (1872) first noted this phenomenon, conceding to being at a loss to explain why expressions such as smiling and sneering defiance were predominantly one-sided. Emotion lateralization offers a plausible account. Because the lower two-thirds of the face is contralaterally controlled, the emotion-dominant right hemisphere innervates the lower left hemiface, resulting in more intense expressions. Thus whether smiling or sneering, humans show stronger emotion on the left side of the face. This chapter reviews

Facial expressions of emotion are thought to have evolved from the development of facial muscles used in sensory regulation and later adapted to express moral judgment. Negative moral judgment includes the expressions of anger, disgust and contempt. Here, we study the hypothesis that these facial expressions of negative moral judgment have further evolved into a facial expression of negation regularly used as a grammatical marker in human language. Specifically, we show that people from different cultures expressing negation use the same facial muscles as those employed to express negative mor

Asymmetries in human facial expressions have long been documented and traditionally interpreted as evidence of brain laterality in emotional behavior. Recent findings in nonhuman primates suggest that this hemispheric specialization for emotional behavior may have precursors in primate evolution. In this study, we present the first data collected on our closest living relative, the chimpanzee. Objective measures (hemimouth length and area) and subjective measures (human judgements of chimeric stimuli) indicate that chimpanzees' facial expressions are asymmetric, with a greater involvement of t

Memory biases toward threat have been documented in several anxiety disorders, but contradictory findings have recently been reported in social phobics' recognition of facial expressions. The present study examined recognition memory in clients with social phobia, in an effort to clarify previous inconsistent results. Just before giving a speech to a live audience, social phobia clients and normal controls viewed photographs of people with reassuring and threatening facial expressions. The stimuli were later presented again alongside photographs of the same person with a different facial expre

BACKGROUND: Apoptosis has been implicated in neuronal degeneration after optic and sciatic nerve injury. The mechanisms contributing to facial motoneuron death are poorly understood. This study investigated the mechanisms underlying facial motoneuronal death and the expression of BCL-2 in facial motoneurons after facial nerve injury.
METHODS: Morphologic changes in the facial motoneurons were examined by light and transmission electron microscopy, and TdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) methods was used. Expression of BCL-2 was studied by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybrid

College students were instructed to observe symmetric and asymmetric facial expressions and to report the target's judgment of the "emotion" she or he was expressing, the facial movements involved, and the more expressive side. For both asymmetric and symmetric expressions, some of the most common emotions or states reported are neither included in standard taxonomies of emotion nor studied as important signals. Confusion is the most common descriptor reported for asymmetric expressions and is commonly reported for symmetrical expressions as well. Other frequent descriptors were think-concentr

AIM: Facial expressions are often impaired in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Few studies have examined the effects of head and neck rehabilitation in patients with PD using a facial expression analysis. In the present study, to further elucidate the effects of facial rehabilitation exercise in patients with PD, a three-dimensional facial expression analysis with FaceReader™ and surface electromyography (EMG) were performed in order to assess the facial expressions and muscle activities, respectively. The effects of such exercises on the mood and mental health were also evaluated.

Background: A more refined and clinically related facial expression analysis is required for patients who wish to be perceived more emotionally positive. Objective: To measure the change in skin vector and volume in facial subunits when expressing positive expression (happiness) compared with negative expressions (sadness, fear, disgust, and anger), using three-dimensional (3D) stereophotogrammetry analysis. Methods: This study took 3D photographs of 20 volunteers' face at rest and during positive and negative expression. The directions of skin vector and volume changes in each facial subregio

Aim of the present observational single center study was to objectively assess facial function in patients with idiopathic facial palsy with a new computer-based system that automatically recognizes action units (AUs) defined by the Facial Action Coding System (FACS). Still photographs using posed facial expressions of 28 healthy subjects and of 299 patients with acute facial palsy were automatically analyzed for bilateral AU expression profiles. All palsies were graded with the House-Brackmann (HB) grading system and with the Stennert Index (SI). Changes of the AU profiles during follow-up we

Previous research on asymmetric effects of emotional expression and brain-hemispheric asymmetry has supported opposing theories of hemispheric dominance in the control of emotional reactions. In the present study, 32 subjects were exposed to pictures of happy and angry facial stimuli while facial electromyographic (EMG) activity from the zygomatic major and the corrugator supercilii muscle regions was detected from the left and right sides of the face. The subjects reacted spontaneously and rapidly with larger zygomatic EMG activity to happy facial stimuli and larger corrugator EMG activity to
