OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasing, presenting a treatment challenge due to limited options. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and associated lipid metabolism disorders are main causes of NAFLD, making it important to inhibit ER stress for effective treatment. Fagopyrum dibotrys has hypolipidemic, anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties, showing promise in treating NAFLD. However, its effects on ER stress in NAFLD remain unclear. This study used a high-fat diet (HFD) to establish NAFLD mouse models and supplemented with Fagopyrum dibot

In the present study, a procyanidins-enriched fraction (PCE) from the rhizome of Fagopyrum dibotrys was obtained by anticomplement activity-guided fractionation. PCE could alleviate H1N1-induced ALI in mice by reducing weight loss, decreasing lung index, and regulating cytokine levels in lung tissue. PCE contained 76.5 ± 1.1% procyanidins with a mean degree of polymerization (mDP) of 5.24 ± 0.16. Meanwhile, thirty-three chemical constituents, including 27 procyanidins and 6 other compounds, were recognized by UPLC-Triple-TOF-MS/MS. Among them, twenty recognized procyanidins were composed of (e

INTRODUCTION: The rhizoma of Fagopyrum dibotrys (D. Don) Hara, a traditional natural medicinal herb with extensive historical applications in China, possess anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antioxidant, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and antidiabetic effects. However, the potential positive effects of F. dibotrys rhizoma meal (FDRM) on productive performance in high-density laying duck farming remain unclear. This experiment was conducted to assess the impacts of FDRM supplementation in Shanma laying ducks diet by determining productive performance, egg quality, egg nutritional value, and seru

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a major global health concern with increasing prevalence, with a lack of currently available effective treatment options; thus, the investigation of novel therapeutic approaches is necessary. The study aimed to investigate the outcomes and mechanisms of action of Fagopyrum dibotrys extract (FDE) in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced mouse model of obesity. The findings showed that FDE supplementation attenuated glucose tolerance, insulin resistance (IR), hepatic steatosis, and abnormal lipid metabolism. In addition, FDE also promoted autophagic activity

Buckwheat originated in North or East Asia and is widely adapted in North America. It has been grown since at least 1000 BC in China. It has very strong adaptability to adverse environments with a very short growing span. Many varieties are growing around the world, but mainly in the north hemisphere. Currently the most common buckwheat spice is Fagopyrum esculentum Moench (common buckwheat or sweet buckwheat), while Fagopyrum tartaricum is also available in some mountainous regions. Many nutraceutical compounds exist in buckwheat seeds and other tissues. Buckwheat has been used and will be be

Fagopyrum esculentum (Moench) is a valuable pseudo-cereal valued for its highly nutritious, gluten-free seeds. Despite being recognized as a 21st -century superfood, buckwheat remains non-competitive in seed yield compared to common cereals. Low productivity is mainly caused by abnormalities in female gametophyte development and frequent flower and embryo abortion. Buckwheat flowers accumulate high levels of phototoxic fagopyrin (FAG), whose physiological role remains unclear. FAG and its precursor (PFAG) are light-sensitive compounds with absorbance spectra in the green-yellow range (549-593

Common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is a climate-resilient pseudocereal; however, its global adoption is constrained by the heteromorphic self-incompatibility associated with distyly. While the S-locus early flowering 3 (FeS-ELF3) gene has been identified as a key regulator of self-compatibility, a stable genetic transformation of F. esculentum has not yet been developed. In this study, we established an Agrobacterium-mediated transformation protocol for F. esculentum by adapting an F. tataricum procedure, incorporating a heat-shock treatment at 43 °C for 5 min. This achieved a transgenic

For the first time, the composition and the content of the main components of the phenolic complex of aboveground organs of buckwheat plants (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) with different levels of ploidy (2n and 4n) at the initial stages of ontogenesis and their changes under the action of cadmium (Cd, 65 µM) were studied by the method of high-performance liquid chromatography. In all variants, phenolic compounds (PCs) were represented by chlorogenic acid (phenylpropanoid), rutin (flavonol), as well as orientin, isoorientin, vitexin, and isovitexin (flavones). The amount of PCs in the cotyledon

Planting plants to increase soil carbon input has been widely used to achieve carbon neutrality goals. Tartary buckwheat not only has good barren tolerance but is also rich in nutrients and very suitable for planting in barren areas. However, the effects of different genotypes of Tartary buckwheat roots and rhizosphere microorganisms on soil carbon input are still unclear. In this study, ozone sterilization was used to distinguish the sources of soil organic acids and C-transforming enzymes, and the contribution of root and rhizosphere microorganisms to soil carbon storage during the growth pe

The homogenization of landscapes and reduction in floral diversity have increasingly led to low diversity in pollen diets for honey bees. In this study, we examined the effects of monofloral pollen diets based on wind-pollinated (Corylus sp., Pinus sp.) and insect-pollinated plants (Brassica napus L., Phacelia sp., Solidago sp., Fagopyrum sp.) on the development of hypopharyngeal glands (HPGs), activities of enzymatic (AST, ALT, ALP, GGTP) and non-enzymatic (urea, uric acid) biomarkers, as well as magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus concentrations in the hemolymph and fat bodies from different

The current study explored the effect of multifrequency ultrasonication (20, 40, 60 kHz, and their combinations) on germination, nutritional profile, techno-functional properties, and physical properties of tartary buckwheat. Relative to the non-ultrasonicated control group, tri-frequency ultrasonication at 20/40/60 kHz significantly improved water absorption by 88.66 %, increasing immobilized and free water availability to achieve a germination rate of 85 % at 48 hrs. This ultrasonication-assisted germination increased α-amylase, PAL (phenylalanine ammonia-lyase), PPO (polyphenol oxidase), an

The human population is growing and alternate food options are needed to provide food and nutritional security to mankind. Reduced agricultural output as a result of climate change and increased demand for grains because of continuous population growth have created a gap between demand and supply of food. Buckwheat is a pseudocereal crop plant with high nutritional value that can be included as an alternate food in our diet. It is a traditional crop plant grown in the high mountains of the Himalayas for food as well as fodder. It completes its life cycle in 3-4 months, so is mostly grown as a

Buckwheat is increasingly used in food and pillows in Europe and is a potent potential allergen when ingested or inhaled. A 74-year-old Danish woman experienced anaphylaxis after ingesting industrially manufactured pancakes. She was IgE-sensitized and was persistently asymptomatic after allergen elimination. A thorough medical history is pivotal to identify untraditional allergens that can evoke severe allergic reactions.

Honey is a highly valued product due to its nutritional value, pro-health and healing properties. Pollutants from the environment penetrate into nectar, honeydew, pollen and next into bee products and can cause human exposure after ingestion. Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal to living organisms. This is why it was important to determine the level of Hg in consumed honey. The aim of this manuscript is to analyse mercury concentration in honeys collected on the territory of Poland. A total of 108 samples of honey purchased in regional apiaries and hypermarkets were tested. The concentration of Hg wa

Tartary buckwheat is a nutrient-rich pseudocereal, yet the metabolic basis underlying quality shifts from domestication to breeding improvement remains poorly understood. Here, phenotyping together with untargeted and targeted metabolomics was integrated to characterize wild-type (WT), cultivated-type (CL), and newly developed (HB) germplasm, and machine-learning analysis was further used for a preliminary assessment of stage discrimination. HB showed larger grains and more pronounced metabolic remodeling than CL/WT. Targeted analyses revealed a V-shaped pattern for several flavonoids, with vi

Background/Objectives: Demand for functional foods is growing due to the desire to prevent cardiometabolic disorders. Pseudocereals, particularly quinoa, buckwheat, and amaranth, stand out for their functional properties related to cardiometabolic health. The dietary fiber, plant proteins, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals in pseudocereals primarily help to regulate glycemic response and lipid profile, as well as blood pressure. The aim of this review is to briefly explain the role of pseudocereals in biological mechanisms underlying cardiometabolic effects and evaluate the findings of hu

Buckwheat anaphylaxis is commonly recognized in Europe and Asia, and there is only one case reported in Taiwan so far. Here, we report a case of biphasic buckwheat anaphylaxis in a 57 year-old male patient who lost consciousness twice in the same day after having buckwheat noodles. The serum test shows that Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp)immunoglobulin E (IgE) (42.4 kU/L) and buckwheat-specific IgE (81.5 kU/L) are unusually high. Although biphasic buckwheat anaphylaxis is rare, we should still be aware the second episode could be life-threatening and happen within a day after the exposure
